  1. Very cool! I caught most of THE CHAMP this morning before work (seen it before, GREAT flick!). And I decided to DVR GALLANT SONS, and checking that out now--never saw this one before and it looks very good so far! The thriller/crime element attracted me, natch!

  2. I'm with Love, I am in love with Noir! But I also love crime and mystery and gangster films from the early classic era, so in a way I'm not sure if I am a fan of that more than noir per se, just that many noir films, or films many consider noir, have crime and mystery/detective/gangster elements in them? Haven't sorted that out, but I do love most noir films! :)

  3. TCM will be airing a block of Tim Holt westerns this Tuesday morning starting at 6am EST! Gotta check it out! For me the jewel in this block is the first film, THE LAW WEST OF TOMBSTONE, with Harry Carey himself in the lead, Evelyn Brent, Ward Bond and a great supporting cast to go along with Holt! Great B! Thanks TCM!!!

    Here's the lineup:

6:00 AM Law West of Tombstone, The (1938)

A cowardly judge enlists a hot young gunman to help him fight outlaws. Cast: Harry Carey, Tim Holt, Evelyn Brent. Dir: Glenn Tryon. BW-73 mins, TV-G

    7:15 AM Renegade Ranger (1938)

A Texas Ranger discovers the man he's chasing for murder is a woman. Cast: George O'Brien, Rita Hayworth, Tim Holt. Dir: David Howard. BW-59 mins, TV-G

    8:15 AM Wagon Train (1940)

Settlers and traders en route to the West fight off Indian attacks. Cast: Tim Holt, Ray Whitley, Martha ODriscoll. Dir: Edward Killy. BW-59 mins, TV-G

9:15 AM Along The Rio Grande (1941)

Two cowboys go undercover to catch a rustler on his way to Mexico. Cast: Tim Holt, Ray Whitley, Betty Jane Rhodes. Dir: Edward Killy. BW-64 mins, TV-G, CC

10:30 AM Bandit Trail, The (1941)

  4. Just catching this flick this morning (before football), from Friday's telecast, on the DVR. What a nasty little film, but great in that noir way! Lawrence Tierney is in fine form here as is Claire Trevor! And great support from Walter Slezak (always aptly named I thought!!!), the always awesome Elisha Cook, Jr., and Esther Howard (one of my favorite little known character actresses).

    Very intense flick!

  5. I'm going to make a topic for this all by itself, and I realize it's early, but this requires planning, because I'm advocating TCM scour the WB/MGM/RKO vaults...the TCM Library itself...to air films rarely or never seen before from that library! That may require digital mastering of many of those films and that will take some time! I hear all the time folks on here say that TCM aired this or that early 30's film back in the early days and the reasons given for those kinds of films not airing these days is lack of a digital master. I'm thinking in our anniversary year (and I say "our" because we all have a stake in this!) that it would be AWESOME if TCM would work on this from now until then--expending resources typically used to secure more library leases--to show more from it's own library, to let us see all those silents, early 30's and 40's films that we'd all love to see!!! Please TCM!! Anyone with me???

A year long "Visit the Vaults" with features once or twice in the evening and throughout many of the daytime lineups.

  6. Fred, I'll have to track that bio down, thanks!

I agree, COLORADO TERRITORY is awesome! And stands strong in it's own right, IMO! But HIGH SIERRA...wow...the more I see it, or think about it, the more I think it is such a GREAT film! One of my first intro's to Bogie, and to classic films outside of the horror and sci-fi genres...I'll never forget the first time I saw it, totally transfixed! And every re-viewing leads me to the same place. I'd say that's a GREAT film...or at least one that I truly LOVE!

  7. Fred, that's a GREAT idea, to help get Chan re-introduced on TV! I love it!!! And fully support it! Thank you for those informative links and for the suggestion!!! Let's hope that TCM might take it up!

At the very least, let's see if we can get the Monogram Chan's to appear, some of which used to show up on the schedule from time to time!

  8. OMG, I'm totally grooving to this series!!!

I am looking forward to the discussions before and after each film and there are sooooo many cool films in this series, wow!

The first week is my fave, natch, but I'm digging all of them!!!

  9. Ollie, Molo, Tiki---I'm totally with you!!! I love all these little known gems!!! I love CRIME BY NIGHT, one of my favorite crime/comedies! And BORDER INCIDENT, I haven't had a chance to see it yet, but it's fired up on the DVR ready to roll, thanks to TCM!!! I watched The Bowery Boys film this morning, loving those every Saturday morning too! Love to see them, love to see anything obscure, but of course, looking forward to heavy hitters WHITE HEAT and HIGH SIERRA tonight also!

I'm an advocate of more obscure stuff, like the great MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW the other night...and all these great films, showing up either in prime time or odd times! TCM is rocking the house as far as I'm concerned! Thank you one and all!

    > Raft made a series of nifty noirs for RKO in the 40's, the best of which was probably NOCTURNE.

Ray, I agree, I really dug that flick and loved him in the 40's!!! He rocked!

I'm digging on some of his appearances in the Forgotten Noir series (available on Amazon and other sites). I was able to get 3 of them through 2 of these sets, though some of the other films are worth a look too, of course, particularly for fans of low-budget and obscure noir/crime films. The best of the 3, by far, is LOAN SHARK, excellent flick with heavy noir hitter Paul Stewart, and occasional hanger-on John Hoyt, rounding out the cast. I also did MAN FROM CAIRO and I'LL GET YOU too though, Raft during this period rocked, as he did pretty much in any era of his career!

  11. I'm not sure how this thread totally shifted gears to become a discussion of Charlie Chan, but I'm digging it and thanks to everyone for your insightful comments! I love the character and the films!

In fact, I'm watching CHARLIE CHAN'S SECRET right now from the Fox box set, and it's totally cool! I'm tempted to purchase all 5 of the Fox sets....sitting here contemplating...it will be a sacrifice, but one I think is worth it! I have this one (Set 3) and the Set 5 already...so 3 more to go! I think I'll go with at least one of the Oland sets, the one with the earlier films, they are so cool!

I'm gonna hold off on the Monogram's for a little bit, though I love them, they are clearly of lesser quality overall, and with money is tight, have to choose! Will get them all eventually though!
