  1. A 100 pack of those Mystery films, which includes mysteries and detectives and some noir and crime films too. It's from Mill Creek Entertainment.

Been watching Dick Tracy, The Shadow, Mr. Moto and Mr. Wong films so far, but going to enjoy some more! I guess the cable going out was a blessing in disguise, as I can't watch anything on the DVR either, so it gives me an opportunity to explore some of my recent DVD purchases.

Anyone have a favorite crime/detective film series?

    > Actually, I expect that *THE MAGICIAN* will be released by Warner Archive. But the lack of any of the Chaney MGM's such as *TELL IT TO THE MARINES, THE BLACKBIRD,* and *MOCKERY* having appeared so far, leads me to believe that those will get something more extensive than just a plain Warner Archive DVD-R.

I sure hope so! I am not a huge fan of the DVD-R stuff (though with the economy I get it), now that I've started to purchase films, I'm really hoping for more, with commentaries and extras! And re-mastering! Call me spoiled! :)

  3. MissWonderly, I totally love that story about HANNAH AND HER SISTERS!!! It's been a long time since I'd seen that film and I didn't remember that, but yes, that's so true!

I also have a soft spot for ANIMAL CRACKERS! I have to say that might be my favorite film of theirs, but difficult to choose, really, they are all very, very good!

    > TCM played the Marx Bros years ago for New Year's Eve. I have both box sets. You should have plenty of fun. BTW, I don't think "Love Happy" is in that set but truthfully you aren't missing much.

I think you are right about NYE! I remember seeing that and I believe that may have been my first introduction to the Paramount films! It was amazing seeing those! They are so much better overall, but I love the MGM (and RKO and other) films as well!

  5. Tiki, you're so right, they never get old!

That scene you referenced is in A DAY AT THE RACES, though I wasn't sure you didn't know that were just making a point about all of the films being on just two sets, which I agree is awesome!

I decided to get the MGM film set first (which includes 2 films made outside the studio as well), mainly because it was waaaay cheaper, and also because you get more bang for that lower buck--more films (which means more Marx Bros--always good!), more extras, including two commentaries, and by all accounts, the films are sharp and crisp. It's unfortunate that the Paramount set, which of course are their better films by and large, isn't that way, by all accounts the films are not cleaned up as well as they should and whatever extras are included are skimpy and no commentaries. Plus the set is more than double the price, from what I've seen. So I may wait a bit on that one, and hope I can either get a much better price, or even better they come out with a new set that has more to offer in terms of quality and quantity.

Meanwhile, I caught two of them just the other day with the Thelma Todd tribute, and that's great that TCM will air them---and I think we're in for a treat on NY Eve as well!

  6. Ed, I would agree re: Wallace Beery in that role, but as you mentioned, the film had a GREAT cast otherwise, though I thought he did a pretty decent job in many respects. But Beery was a force and it would have made it a GREAT film, IMO!

Scott, I agree, THE SECRET SIX was a cool flick and one I'd love to see again--TCM???!! :) But the title was weird, as the best stuff was happening not among the "secret six"...interesting flick.

Back to GENTLEMAN'S FATE, I just think it a much better film that it's given credit for generally. Gilbert was in very good form, Leroy, while not one of his best, did a good job...and Marie Prevost? Heaven!!!

  7. I agree with musicalnovelty! And more early 30's films in general please????!!! :) I'm loving what we are enjoying, but more of them would be awesome! Thelma...wow! More of her please!

And Fred, that cracked me up! I can't even imagine doing all that, but more power to him!

I totally agree!!! I actually really love watching "The Beverly Hillbillies"! Funny show!

    > clore - HIS GIRL FRIDAY is a perfect example. Sony was very good for that. Also, MGM released KANSAS CITY CONFIDENTIAL, THE STRANGER and HE WALKED BY NIGHT - all public domain - and I have them on DVD. Crisp video and clear audio. The forgotten Fox noir SHOCK with Vincent Price and Lynn Bari was released in their Fox Film Noir set that they discontinued (rather abruptly if I may say so myself) and is in the public domain....yet AND THEN THERE WERE NONE is a pd film and could really use the restoration (it's such a great film!) I wish more noirs in PD were rescued.

I agree, and wow, those 3 films you mentioned--KCC, THE STRANGER and HE WALKED BY NIGHT--awesome flix and great that they are available in that condition, worth it to get (and I also have them all on those sets I mentioned earlier in watchable but not pristine condition).

  10. Thanks for all the feedback regarding this show! I have it on a schedule DVR, so it records it whenever it's on (usually once or twice a day in the wee hours on a channel called THIS, which is one of 2 channels that show more classic TV shows than the lame TVLand). I've really been grooving to it! Hard-hitting crime stories, that really pack a lot into those half hours and I love Broderick Crawford in this!

    > I'm recording that movie PAID (1930) with Joan Crawford. It's listed as a mystery/crime on my cable's info and I am curious to see the pre-code raciness etc around a crime.

Awesome stuff, Love, tell us how you like it once you see it? I am DVR'ing it to watch again tomorrow night or over the weekend. Great stuff, IMO!

  12. Oh man, that stinks, I'm sorry that happened!

I've had that happen to me before also, when there was a morning of rare pre-codes about a year or so ago, the cable went out all morning and only came back when the block was over! Well, I hope TCM will consider airing Thelma flix again sometime very soon!

  13. I also would dig seeing the Fox pre-codes! I'd love to see Fox do a series of box sets based upon that theme, the "Early Fox" or something like that. So many rare and great films!

I wish FMC would air more of these as well. I used to get Fox with my basic digital package where I used to live, but this cable system puts FMC on some sort of weird tier with nothing but bizarre sports channels (not even Fox-owned sports channels). It's bizarre, FMC is the only entertainment/non-sports channel in the tier! So I have resisted paying more for that, as many of their noir and other films are showing up on TCM and Encore and some other places that I do get (for example, LAURA was on Retro a few weeks ago). But if they were to really delve into their archives and air some of those, I'd pony up. I would for any box sets devoted to these films as well.

I don't have any Alpha releases, but do have several of those Mill Creek Entertainment box sets (50 and 100 movie packs)--they used to be called Treeline I think. The quality is probably about the same, I guess, but it's still a very cheap way to get a lot of those films. I particularly like the Mystery 100 Pack, the Crime Classics 50 pack, and the Horror 50 pack, but I also just got the Comedy 100 Pack (very good), and I'm looking to get a few more. The only thing to watch for is that they do repeat quite a few of the titles from one pack to the next, so you have to be careful and check the title lists ahead of time.

  14. Oh wow, those clips on youtube made me sad though! Even though I never had AMC on my cable system when it was much better, I did get it for it's last year and a half before totally "jumping the shark" and how sad to see when it was in its "heyday"! No offense to TCM, I love them, but how sweet would it be to have two channels showing classic films commercial free (yeah, FMC is out there, but they only show classic films for part of each day and a very limited selection for the most part). I did catch AMC every once in a while when I visited someone who had it, and I always loved it. Bob Dorian seemed very nice and amiable.

    > Marie Prevost fans (and I sure am one!) watch for her in PAID (1930) on TCM Friday morning.

Oh yes, that's right! I definitely have it on my DVR list, one of my favorite pre-codes, and of course looking forward to Marie!!!

Back to GENTLEMAN'S FATE for a sec, I thought her character was awesome in this film! She was perfect in every scene, and when she was on camera, I couldn't take my eyes off her, not only for her looks--which are gorgeous--but her performance which was so spot on!

    > I DVD'd this one and am looking forward to watching it. I love Kay's Pre-Codes, and Thelma is a bonus.

I agree, Arch! I'm also going to have to catch it from the DVR later. Prince, I agree, awesome stuff!

I wish they would put more of these pre-codes out on DVD sometime! I feel there is still a pretty big audience for the pre-code stuff!

  17. I saw GENTLEMAN'S FATE the other day for the first time, and really loved it! What a powerful film! Yes, there were a few rough editing spots, but overall I thought it was a good film, the story was a downer and generally sad, but that's ok, it was a dark film, which began on a note that you would never guess! In fact the scene with the Butler was one of the funniest on film and it's a shame in w way that they couldn't get back to that somewhat, but overall I see where they were going with it. Marie Prevost...wow another tragic figure who I loved in everything I've seen her in! Gilbert was great in this, and Anita Page??? Yowza!!!
