If anyone could help me name the movie I am about to describe it would be very much appreciated. It was one of the last movies my mother and I watched together.

 

I believe it was made in the 1940's, it was in black and white, a romance story and starred mostly English actors. For the life of me I cannot remember the name but can remember most of the story line.

 

It was about an English army officer (? of the first world war) who has amnesia. He cannot remember anything about who he was or what he did. He is in living in an asylum and one night simply gets up and walks away; starting another life in a small village, marrying a woman in the process.

 

One day he gets hit on the head and suddenly remembers who he is (I think he is in a chemist shop and something falls on his head). Of course he forgets the fact that he currently has a wife and goes back to his original life. He just happens to be a wealthy business man, I think he becomes a politician in the story.

 

Now his (new) wife finds this out in the papers and goes to speak with a psychiatrist who advises her that his memory of her will come back in time. Also, he states that if she was to confront him with the fact he may completely reject it! So not knowing exactly what to do, she starts working for him as a secretary. Hoping that seeing her everyday will remind him.

 

Of course, he does not remember her and she is heart broken. Eventually, she leaves his employment and goes back to the little village where she used to live.

 

Now her husband has a factory which is on strike and which just happens to be in the same village where his wife lives. He has a headache (or something like it) and goes to the same chemist where he regained his memory in the first place.

 

Suddenly, he starts to remember everything and the film ends with him walking to his wife's house and a happy ending promptly ensues!

 

If anyone recognises this movie I would greatly appreciate knowing the name. I have tried looking before, but have given up. There are a lot of movies with a similar storyline, but none that I have found with the essential elements named above. I am sure this movie exists!
