  1. Beauty is not only in the eye of the beholder but also what is beauty. Most actresses are pretty. The list of pretty and cute actresses would be endless. June Allyson, Doris Day and Terri Garr were very cute and pretty usually cast as the wife for example. Being a guy that was a teen in the 1960s and 1970s, these are some actresses that I thought were sexy. Of course MARILYN MONROE and JAYNE MANSFIELD were of the 1950s. KATY JURADO was very sexy in the 1950s and ANNA MAGNANI was sexy in an earthy and not amazingly beautiful way. NANCY KWAN was sexy in the 1950s as was CARA WILLIAMS. AVA GARDNER was very sexy as was ELIZABETH TAYLOR into the 1960s and 1970s. MELINA MERCOURI and ANNE BANCROFT had sex appeal. SUE ANN LANGDON and ELAINE DEVRY were both sexy. BARBARA STREISAND and ANN MARGARET could both be very sexy. SYLVIA MILES in the late 60s and early 70s was sexy. Two James Bond women that I thought were very sexy were LUCIANNA PALUZZI and BARBARA CARRERA . SONIA BRAGA is very sexy. .....So I've tried to throw some names out there, some more famous than others. There are alot of pretty actresses but I thought these I mentioned had that something extra. Again, some are not the most beautiful actresses ever but in their own way they were sexy on film. I also tried to add some non white American women to the list and mix the list up a little bit. Considering the sexy actresses of Europe, Asia and South America, they were easy to add to the list. I also didn't focus on just youth because I think Hollywood is wrong that only youth is beauty. Streisand was no teenager in the 1970s films but she was sexy. Its hard to argue that Ava Gardner, Elizabeth Taylor and Ann Margaret looked great as they got older and proved maybe Hollywood goes too much on youth. The problem is I can't decide which one on my list is the most beautiful. As I say, there have been a million beautiful actresses and this was a fun thread. It would be interesting to see how the woman would answer most handsome actors and I bet they wouldn't all be beefcakes, just as my list of woman isn't all the poster girls Hollywood has tried to sell us. ......This was a fun thread and my list is my opinion only. I know I've left some actresses off, but the list must end somewhere. You can't blame me too much for looking at sex appeal when discussing Holywood actresses because I'm sure the studios were thinking about it. Message was edited by: WhyaDuck

  3. A few people have shared the regret of TCM not having the old Universal Classic Horror Movies for Halloween. This being the case, I will mention AMC is showing some but at some strange times. You may want to record these if you have any recording devices. That way you could watch them at a better time. Saturday 25th : 8:15 AM , Son Of Frankenstein ....10:30 AM, House Of Frankenstein Tuesday 28th : 7:45 AM , Bride Of Frankenstein....9:30 AM , Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman Wednesday 29th : 6 AM , The Mummys Hand Friday 31st : 4:30 AM , House Of Dracula All times are Eastern Standard Time. They seem to be using these classics as morning filler. Not one in prime time. Again, you may want to record them to see them at a better time of day. Since alot of people have regreted the non showing of these movies many of us grew up with, I feel its fair to try to find out on the internet who is showing them and when. Most of these movies feature grave robbers. In the Mummy movies the archaeologists are shown to also be grave robbers. So sometimes these grave robbers get whats coming to them from the Mummys and Werewolves and such. Also the full moon comes into play bringing the Mummy and Wolfman back again and again. Son Of Frankenstein has Bela Lagosi in a role almost as good as his Dracula as Egor. Bela steals the movie as Egor with Karloff as the monster his last time. House Of Frankenstein has Boris Karloff as an evil madman trying to control Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolfman. Of course Karloff is great as the monster in Bride Of Frankenstein. Lon Chaney Jr is the tormented Lawrence Talbott in Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman. I don't remember which one the Mummys Hand is, but they usually have the flashback to how the Pharoe had him killed in ancient Egypyt. Killed for being in love with the princess I believe and his mummy stays the protector of the princess to this day. House of Dracula has John Carradine who I think was fantastic in Grapes Of Wrath and one of the better character actors ever.
  4. Well, I remember " Bambi " being very sad as a kid. Then again, so was " Dumbo ". I cry at the end of " Pride Of The Yankees ", but you have Babe Ruth out there with Cooper and that Lou Gehrig speech and his wife crying and him fading away into the tunnel as he faded away in real life. " Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth ". That gets me every time. ..but as Al Pacino walks into the hall to help the prep school kid, that gets me. ...the end of Ghost gets me, but so does the same ending years earlier in " Carousal " as the dead father attends the daughters graduation and those important words before he also climbs into heaven to the song " You'll Never Walk Alone ". " The Jokers Wild " as Sinatra comes face to face with himself in the mirror ( window ). I think there are tears as Borgnine and Betty Davis finally come together after years of indifference and he smiles as she tells him he gets his cab after all. I think it is sad in ' Million Dollar Baby " at the hospital, or as Forrest Gump speaks to the graves of his mom and his wife Jenny near the end and leaves his sons letter on the grave. I find Bergman as the nun saying good bye to Crosbys Father O'Malley more of a tear jerker than Casablancas ending. I find Spencer Tracy with nothing for Christmas for Boys Town very sad. Or an old Spencer Tracy telling Katherine Hepburn that he loves her at the end of " Guess Whos Coming To Dinner ". I even find Jimmy Durante saying good night to Misses Calibash sad as he disappears into the spotlights. Or Ralph Cramden having to tell Alice that all he ever wanted to do was get her a few things for a change instead of being poor, and thats why he blew another get rich quick plan. ....or how about the end of Chaplins " Modern Times " as the song SMILE plays as the girl crys and Chaplin says to smile, but as they walk away down the road in the Great Depression, it is bleak in spite of Chaplin trying to raise her spirits. Or even the end of the Chaplin movie where the girl discovers that the tramp she has been laughing at is indeed the person who worked to pay for her eye operation and end her blindness. Or, she got sight, but now she really sees. ...I think " Its A Wonderful Life " can bring a tear to your eye at the end if you're human at all. They seem to be coming up with alot of lists these days, and that doesn't mean they are acurate. Such as its very easy to say the best movie ever was " Citizen Kane " and it's a very good movie that critics won't bash you for liking. ...but is it the best ever, is it really ??? I think thats hard to say considering all the great movies. I could think of great movies that never make any of these lists. So could you......and I think alot of us could cry over the price to take the family to the movies today and the price for popcorn and drinks. It's enough to make you cry. ... So if beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, so are the tears. Message was edited by: WhyaDuck Message was edited by: WhyaDuck Message was edited by: WhyaDuck
  5. I saw this for the second time the other night and its a riot. Uncle Fester is Mr. A , ( or Mr Big ). At the end the good old football team saves the day lead by Michael Landon. I like it where the undercover cop tells Michael Landon that the police chief says he was told he could count on him and the team. So this cop sends the high school football team into this rain of gun fire that could have got all the high school team killed. .......My favorite line is this blonde Van Doren saying she can't stand a guy that can't hold his liquor and then she passes out on the floor. ...It's a riot. ... ...Even the happy ending as the teacher, high school hero and his girl drive down the road as Van Doren is on her back with a guy in the back seat. You would never add that but it was such a send up of this would be Monroe....the film is so stupid it's funny....Family values in the front seat and sex in the back seat. ...but it proves what Carrie Fisher tod the royal MC of TCM..." Just because a movie is old does NOT mean its a CLASSIC ". Perhaps thats why I haven't seen her on TCM lately, but I think she said something to Osbourne that needed to be said. This movie stinks so bad that it is funny, but it is not a classic. Its classic garbage, but it's not a classic. This is a classic in the way Plan 9 From Outer Space is a classic. Its a cult classic because its so awful and stupid.......Again, Uncle Fester as Mr Big says it all. But it was funny and stupid. So bad it was funny. You can't really say anybody was good in this movie. Michael Landon admitted to doing " I Was A Teenage Werewolf ", but I never heard him bring this turkey up on Johnny Carson. I don't know all this Van Doren blonde did but if this was her claim to fame, it isn't much. ....As for Unlce Fester, he had a long career and wasn't he the kid in Charlie Chaplins " The Kid " or was he the kid in " The Champ ". I think he was the kid with Chaplin and Chaplin was very amused by him and his talent as a kid on and off the screen. I liked him as Fester also...but as Mr. Big it's just a joke. Most people in this movie probably denied they were ever in it. Reffer Madness is pretty stupid, but this is actually worse with the cop sending the high school football team into the gunfight, again, that ending with the front seat like Ozzie and Harriet while Van Doren is sucking the guys face in the back seat is like, what was the director smoking ?. 8. I was a strong arm man for one of the smaller Godfathers. He was pretty small, he could have been a jockey or a pigmey or somethin'. One of the smaller Godfathers. .....I could have been a two strong armed man but I only had the one strong arm, which cut my pay in half. .....Now some people think it was all Murder Incorporated, but I must have been in a non union shop because I never got no retirement plan or nuttin'. ....but I transpose......Some Godfathers had names like " Luckey ". Mines nickname was " Longshot . So " Longshot " tells us he wants to start backing this kid Frank. It was 1965, for crying out loud, who didn't know who Frank was already ? ....We try to tell " Longshot " this but he says " a bing and a bip and a bop and a bam ". ..How can you argue with such logic ? ........ So Godfather Longshot makes Frank an offer he thinks maybe can't be refused. He says he knows Frank is doing Vegas, Movies and TV.....but " Longshot " thinks Frank can bring back old time radio. Frank did have a favor to ask and that was to look out for Mia with the Yogi. Turns out Longshot had the wrong Yogi and I spent the Summer Of Love watching Berra coach the Yankees. From what I hear, Ringo says I didn't miss much. ...but I transpose.....The point is that " Longshot " never got nuttin' right and Frank had been in show bussiness for decades when Longshot tried to cash in too late. I knew Longshot was going off the deep end when he heard the Cabbage Patch Kids all had their own ideneties, so he had me spend that year making sure those dolls didn't squeel on each other. He thought their was going to be some protection money in the doll racket. I ended up doing time for betting on the Walter Mondale election. Longshot now sleeps with the fishes, he ain't dead, he just likes to sleep with fishes. Message was edited by: WhyaDuck
  9. I thought it was bad until I saw the British Government talking the same thing. I'm not so sure Mickey Rooney or Judy Garland are going to get it done this time. .....I see old movies such as John Doe and see it happening again only worse........A resession is when your neighbor losses his job, a depression is when you lose your job.....If the government admitts resession, then it is a depression. ....So what great old movies are we to learn from. Grapes Of Wrath or Marx Brothers. ...Our grandparents use to say that the problem was we never lived through a depression and maybe we should have. After decades of the ME GENERATION, it seems like its time to pay the piper. I base this on Republican Ford and Democrat Carter that said there WAS an energy problem years ago until movie star Reagan said everything is beautiful. Use up everything in the 80's but cut out school lunches and tax waitresses and cab driver tips because he was a great guy ( but I will not tax the rich ). Mister Hollywood. .....Well we all knew some generation would pay for that, and it appears the time has come. ....I hope everybody got fat in the 80's.....So what great depression movies can we look to for grandpas's encouragement in the tough years ahead ? Or is Bonnie and Clyde the solution ? I really hope I'm being to negartive, but CEOs taking the bail out to go on vacation while the companys flounder tells me different. I thought it was just us until I saw the BRitish. This is a world depression and what can we learn from Charlie Chaplin but " Smile ". Walter Brennan and Gary Cooper make it seem like you can play harmonicas until the hunger fades away. The old Negroes in the movies make it seem like they can laugh and dance their hunger away. ...We all should know this is just Hollywood and a song in your heart doesn't feed the kids or you. ...But keep you Sunny Side Up as in Paper Moon. 10. This was very informative on this product...and this is no way an attack but just a personal thought about the upcoming holiday season. The nation is in hard economic times and to many home foreclosers and no health care are not just topic of conversation, they are in fact a reality for much of the USA. Big Bussiness may find the holiday season not as marketable this year at any price. Which is OK because Christmas is not about corporate America but the birth of Christ, born in a stable. As foreclosers increase, jobs shipped over seas, adults andd children without being able to go to doctors or attain medicine, there may be other babys born in stables this Christmas. ......I see Wall Street is having it rough, well join the rest of the nation Wall Street because alot of the nation has already had it rough. Join the party. ......Memorex and these other companies may find that the doubled price of gasoline and home utilities forces the elimination of alot of Holiday spending, which is a good thing. Let Big Bussiness feel the effects of its own greed. Just a thought on the holiday shopping and certainly not an attack on people posting. Just an acceptance of the hard economic times for alot of America and what could be a Blue Christmas for many. For those in the market for such items, this is good information.
  11. He was one of my favorites. I really think he got better as he got older. I like " Cool Hand Luke " and Butch Cassisy and The Sting. .....but in the 1980s he was great in The Verdict and Color Of Money. ....Then in the 1990s I thought he was great in Nobodys Fool, a movie that will be chopped up by censors for TV beyond recognition, but it has a great story and Newman and Bruce Willis are great in this one. ....He did a private detective movie with James Garner in the late 1990s and was still very good. He aged well and turned in alot of great performances as an older actor. To try to list all his movies would be long. I'm thinking of him as Judge Roy Bean or Buffalo Bill. My late grandmother said she could have watched him ride the bicycle in Butch Cassidy all day. Not many actors could pull off that character in The Sting as he did. Of course there was Cat On A Hot Tin Roof and Long Hot Summer and Hud and the detective he played in the 1970s. What was his name, Hooper or something. I liked the Drowning Pool as this detective also. I even liked him in Hudsucker Proxey. I will say Newmans Own Sockaroonie and Marinnara sauces are very tasty and make the meal. He was a humanatarian, donating a ton of money to charitys. He was married to his wife many, many years, something uncommon in Hollywood. He loved racing cars. Many say out of this era there was James Dean or Marlon Brando....BUT THERE WAS ANOTHER....PAUL NEWMAN, and for my money, better than the other two. Rest In Peace and May God Be With You, Mr Newman.....Nobodys Fool. Message was edited by: WhyaDuck Message was edited by: WhyaDuck Message was edited by: WhyaDuck
  12. I said I liked Magnificent 7, who doesn't. True Grit doesn't have the same drive as you say, but it is a different movie about the girl mostly and then the old tough marshall. It also has to capture the beauty of the wide screen photogrophy used and I think the Magnificent 7 composer captures True Grits scenery perfect and leads up to the old marshall trying to save the snake bitten girl and then her offering him a grave site with her family. The freindship that grows between the youth and the old marshall. So its a different movie with a different edge and a different drive. Both are excellent. Max Steiner has been mentioned a few times. Without listing all his 200 to 300 movies, here is a short list of movies he composed or was involved in : Cimarron.....King Kong......Little Women......Of Human Bondage.......The Informer...................... The Three Muskateers......Little Lord Fauntleroy.......The Charge Of The Light Brigade................ A Star Is Born.......Kid Galahad........The Life And Times Of Emile Zola......The Oklahoma Kid...... Jezebel.....Angels With Dirty Faces......Dawn Patrol.......Each Dawn I Die........Battle Cry............ GONE WITH THE WIND.........Seargent York.......They Died With Their Boots On...................... Casablanca......Arsenic And Old Lace.......The Big Sleep.......Dark Passage......White Heat........ My Wild Irish Rose.......The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre.......Key Largo.......The Letter............. The Adventures Of Mark Twain........New Voyager.......Dark Victory.......The Gay Divorcee......... The Garden Of Allah.......The Dark At The Top Of The Stairs......Marjorie Morningstar................ A Summers Place Most of these he composed, some he recieved awards for his assistance. Some impressive movies with Gone With The Wind a musical movie classic. Alot of good stuff on this list.
  13. And since Elmer Bernstein has been mentioned a few times, without listing his 200 to 300 movies, how many of these movies have you seen and HEARD that he composed The Man With The Golden Arm......The Ten Commandments......Fear Stikes Out......The Tin Star.. Sweet Smell Of Success....Desire Under The Elms....God's Little Acre.....The Buccaneer........... The Magnificent Seven......Some Came Running......The World Of Henry Orient.....Hawaii........... To Kill A Mockingbird......Birdman Of Alcatraz.......Hud.......The Hallelujah Trail....................... The Great Escape.......The Carpetbaggers........The Sons Of Katie Elder.......The Silencers....... True Grit.......Thourouhly Modern Millie.......The Gypsy Moths.....Big Jake......Cahill US Marshall.. The Shootiist..... McQ.......The Trial Of Billy Jack.......Meatballs......Airplane !........Stripes.......... Animal House.......The Great Santini.......Heavy Metal......An American Werewolf In London........ Ghostbusters.......Airplane II........Trading Places........Spies Like Us.......Three Amigos !.......... My Left Foot......Leonard Part 6......Funny Farm......The Grifters.....The Babe......Wild Wild West.. The Rainmaker Magnificent Seven is great but I really like the music to True Grit alot. From beginning to end its an American Western Symphony that really brings you back to watch this movie again and again. Some of these movies on this short list just have perfect music from begiining to end. Again, I guess True Grit is my favorite but I have alot of favorites on this short list. 14. Let me throw another log on the fire Jerome Moross who gave us The Big Country music. The music in that movie is perfect. It grabs you from beginning to the end and is just perfgect throughout. He also composed the music to the movie " The Cardinal " He orcestrated movies such as " Our Town ", " Action In The North Atlantic", " Joan Of Arc ", " The Best Years Of Our Lives ", and " Hans Christian Anderson " Message was edited by: WhyaDuck Message was edited by: WhyaDuck
  15. Leonard Bernstine gave us West Side Story and that great sound and music of On The Waterfront. As for Francis Lai and " Love Story ", I think the music is the best part of that movie. He has did mostly French movies such as Les Miserables. I think his music in Love Story is much better than the movie itself. 16. Franz Waxman was a great name to pull out. The Bride Of Frankenstine score was used by Universal in alot of things from Flash Gordon to Sherlock Holmes to The Wolfman to the Mummy.....Universal got a lot of movies out of this Waxman classic, and I really like it. It goes well with all these movies for those of us who grew up watching the weekly monters movies and such.
  17. We will agree to disagree on that. I think Born Free is a great music score as is Dances With Wolves, Goldfinger, Midnight Cowboy. You take that Stallone movie The Specialist and I thought Barrys music was the best thing about that movie. If the music to Born Free and Dances With Wolves is syrupy, then The Acadamy Awards must have been wrong because he recieved awards for those, and I feel much deserved awards. There are other greats and I'm wondering how long it will take someone to mention another guy named John who directed the Boston Pops ( hint ). Message was edited by: WhyaDuck Message was edited by: WhyaDuck
  18. I will throw John Barrys name out there. Here is the soundtracs he wrote. You have probably seen alot of these movies. His music really makes the movie. Some of these films you may not know that he composed the music...... Never Let Go....... Beat Girl.........Girl On A Roof........Dr No..........The Amorous Prawn........ From Russia With Love........Man In The Middle.........Muloorina.........Zulu..........Mister Moses.... A Jolly Bad Fellow.......... Seance On A Wet Afternoon.........Goldfinger......The Partys Over.. Four In The Morning......The Knack, And How To Get It........The Ipcress Files.......King Rat...... Thunderball.......The Chase......Born Free......The Wrong Boy....The Quiller Memorandum......... Dutchman.......You Only Live Twice.........The Whisperers.........Boom........Petulia.........Deadfall The Lion In Winter.........The Appointment........Midnight Cowboy........Monte Walsh.......... On Her Majestys Secret Service......The Last Valley......Walkabout.......They Might Be Giants Diamonds Are Forever.........Mary, Queen Of Scots........Follow Me.....A Doll's House............ 19. I know TCM says they are putting the best young musical directors to work on these silent films, but tonight I find their music loud and taking away from Buster Keaton. My grandmother played piano and did sound effects in the old movie days. Perhaps thats whats missing. But these new musical scores to go with these old time classics often don't JIVE. . I like TCM, but this thing of turning old movies over to young musical directors, Do they even have any concept of playing within the movie and not taking over. The music is so bad. I can't believe TCM takes pride in this awful new music for these old silent films. Whatever they are doing, it has nothing to do with the film. As they try to climb the ladder of success in the movie music world, they are ruining the old silent movies with their lack of trying to capture the movie or the moment. In other words, THEY STINK. If they would take the time or the effort, they might find the music to these silent films that my grandmother once played. Instead these films are turned over to young hacks who butcher them with no feeling for the tiime or concept of the film, only driven by their desire to do better things than ruin old movies. 22. Another great candidate was comedian Pat Paulson who said that when the economy is good then the government assumes you can pay more taxes and when the economy is bad the government says it can't afford to lower your taxes, so your taxes will go down when its a cold day in ....... He also said that when he ran for President on The Smothers Brothers Show in 1968, that he smoked, he drank, he chased wild women.....and then his opponents had the nerve to say that he was no John F Kennedy. For other movie candidates. I liked what Spencer Tracy was going to say in his speech in " State Of The Union ". ....He was gouing to tell the voters they need to quit crying about taxes until we get a few things done around here that need to be done. .....He was going to say that, but Angela Landsbury who played his manipulative mistress talked him out of it and turned him into just another Jello mold politician. Who are great movie candidates and movie Presidents could make a good thread. 24. The look on Spencer Tracys face as Katherine Hepburn tries to make coffee in Woman Of The Year. This movie is THE ESSENTIAL of the week tonight at 8PM EST Now woman must see that Tracy wasn't against womans lib or his wifes success in this. He doesn't care if she can cook, which she can't. All he wants is for the phoney nonsense to stop, including her trying to be domesticated. Its really a very good movie. Message was edited by: WhyaDuck
