  1. I love Duke Wayne but he did have bad taste. lol....Kay Francis, huh? I guess Duke won that one? Heck, knowing Dietrich, she had them both.
  2. I know it and I don't understand it. I always thought it was because everyone knew she was Hollywood's bicycle and maybe sleeping with her was a rite of passage or something. Otherwise it escapes me.
  3. I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than watch anything with Marlene Dietrich. She is one classic actress that I positively can't stand. I don't think she's talented, I don't think she's pretty, I don't find her engaging or charismatic, I just find her annoying and frightening. I've sat through her movies when she's had a leading man I'm into, but it kills me to do so. While I'm sticking needles in my eyes, she also makes me want to puncture my eardrums. I can't believe how far she got on absolutely nothing, imo.
  4. I like the glamour dolls, but i prefer my leading ladies with a bit of an edge. Bette Davis Ann Sheridan Barbara Stanwyck my runners up are more "fun" ladies: Myrna Loy and Joan Blondell
  5. Ginger's distracting hair aside (someone else mentioned it) , this was a really good movie. Sometimes a classic movie can throw a curveball and the ending isn't happy. I was expecting that with this movie. It was an hour twenty in and their characters were parting company. I didn't know how they could possibly throw them together within the last ten minutes especially with Joseph's character leaving on the train.
  6. If this was directed to me, this thread was sidetracked before I got here. I chimed in on it. i did not suddenly start discussing racism out of the blue. It's not exactly my favorite subject. When someone says something stupid like "most people were racist in the 30's and 40's" as a way to excuse Brennan's shortcomings, I felt the need to answer that. Brennan's character will obviously be discussed alongside his career. It's a given and it's been this way on TCM for all the years I've posted and read here. This thread isn't special. I also added my view of Brennan's acting which is not favorable. .
  7. I'll Be Seeing You with Joseph Cotten and Ginger Rogers was a great surprise. Joe plays a soldier on a sort of furlough from a psychiatric hospital where he was being treated for PTSD and Ginger was a prison inmate on furlough for Christmas. I've seen many Joseph Cotten films but never this one and it was quite a good film. I don't consider myself a fan of Ginger Rogers (I've seen all of films with Fred) but she did a great job in this. I'm surprised she played such a role (it seemed like more of a Joan Crawford or Bette Davis theme but at the same time, this script was too schmaltzy for either). Perhaps mistakenly I think of Ginger as more of a "good girl". Christmas In Connecticut with Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan, Sydney Greenstreet, and S.Z. "Cuddles" Sakall (Cuddles!). Although I am a Stanwyck fan, I watched this because of Cuddles and Sydney Greenstreet (two of my favorite character actors). I love watching films like this over the holidays. It was snowing when it was on and I just curled up with a huge mug of hot chocolate, had all my blinds open watching the snow come down while absorbing this movie. It was really a great day. I DVR so much from TCM and I chose the perfect day for a replay of this one. Crime and Punishment with Peter Lorre and Edward Arnold. A very short (88 min) adaptation of a very, very, very long novel. Very short but well done, especially the acting of Lorre and Arnold.
  8. Hi LawrenceA, I don't know about the FBI agent rumor but I don't know if I believe Stewart was a racist or not. He seemed like he may have been uncomfortable with black males (Hal Williams, Woody Strode) but that discomfort did not translate to black females for whatever reason. He looked very comfortable with LaWanda Page on the Dean Martin Roast in which he was the guest of honor. I always refer people to this video when Stewart is called a racist. The man may have had some "prejudices" but having prejudices is different from being a racist. Being a racist would mean he was outwardly hateful (see Walter Brennan) and used his position to hurt and impede the progress of others. Stewart was no racist, in that case. I also think Michael Munn, Darwin Porter and the like are considered hacks where celebrity bios are concerned. Jimmy Stewart/Lawanda Page. If Stewart was a racist, this never could've or would've happened:
  9. Lon Chaney was born in 1883 and he was not a racist. He died in 1930, I believe. And not to burst your bubble, but many classic film actors were not racist in the 30's and 40's. Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, James Cagney, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Myrna Loy, Claudette Colbert, Henry Fonda, Spencer Tracy, John Garfield, William Holden, Gregory Peck, Fredric March, Burt Lancaster...not racist. In the 50's Paul Newman, James Dean, James Garner, Marlon Brando, Lee Marvin...again, not racist. So, the "everyone was racist in the 30's and 40's" meme doesn't wash. Walter Brennan was a loser. I also think he played the same exact fake folksy character in every single movie and he ripped off his ENTIRE style from George "Gabby" Hayes, who did it much better.
  10. Lee Marvin? You are certified crazy. I say that lovingly, of course. :^0
  11. LEE MARVIN? LOL! OMG. I have to ask...are you a woman? Do you have a pulse? That man is drop dead SEXY. He smolders. I love him. Especially before 1970 . I agree with the rest of your list, however.
  12. I like them both a whole lot but, I will have to choose Fred. Fred's style of dancing appeals to me more. He was so classy and very light on his feet. He made it all seem so effortless. I also like the semi cocky air he exuded in some of the scenes in his films with Ginger. He seemed to do it when he was trying to impress her. Fred Astaire was a dream as a dancer. That said, I admire Gene Kelly's athleticism as well as his skills.
  13. I'm a day late and a dollar short per usual, Fred. I completely agree with you about this film. It is the best film noir ever. Fred MacMurray and Stanwyck were great but as others have pointed out, it was Eddie G who "made" the film, imo. I loved seeing him play the smart guy who actually pieced the whole thing together. It's a crime Eddie was never recognized with a proper Oscar.
  14. You're so right about that. Usually, any spiritual aspect is "ham-fisted"/overt/literal. It was a nice change.
  15. Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint...on the train....North By Northwest.... made my heart race. He was so hot and super sexy! LOL! Cary is my best friend's "man" and she totally understands my drool factor over that scene!
  16. ITA with your view of the performances in it. They were all great. For some reason, I couldn't get that film out of my head for days after seeing it. I have to say, it's one of my favorite Gable films.
  17. Hello Ken123..... I'm going to say Gene Hackman as "Little Bill" in "Unforgiven". Not a classic (a modern classic, yes) but I can't remember hating a so called "authority figure" so much. If you say it, I'm sure you know what I mean.
  18. I know you all will be puzzled by my choice but, I'm going with Peter Lorre in "Strange Cargo". He played a character called "Pig" and for some reason, I found him extremely, extremely unsettling. Creepy and menacing.
  19. Usually: Peanuts in the shell or pistachios Soy yogurt smoothie made with mixed berries or stawberries and bananas Kashi Strawberry Fields cereal w/ soy milk Acai juice sometimes (and preferably homemade): mozzarella chesse sticks w/bleu cheese and marinara chicken wings w/ bleu cheese popcorn (air popped) cheese and salsa dip w/ tortilla chips wanting junk food and not in the mood to cook: Caprese pizza (from Whole Foods)
  20. For the record, the name is SUKEY, Reflex...anyway, you want to know who I like. These are my MOST FAVORITE actors: Actors (NOT in order): William Holden Lon Chaney James Cagney Spencer Tracy Fredric March Lionel Barrymore Gary Cooper Claude Rains Paul Muni Orson Welles Gregory Peck Steve McQueen Paul Newman Joseph Cotten Edward G. Robinson Errol Flynn (more for his looks and on screen charm, I have to admit) Cary Grant Humphrey Bogart(ok so, he's more of a "movie star"

  23. Sounds like this article is okaying his treatment of his children. Wow. It doesn't change my mind about him.
  24. My list is actually longer than this. I had to shorten it because it became ridiculous. This is completely subjective so, don't get all **** off. 1. Rudolph Valentino- I don't get it, I just don't. I don't find him the least bit appealing. IMO, he wasn't sexy and he wasn't a good actor. 2. Will Rogers- Annoying and highly offensive. 3. Marlene Dietrich- She was overdone. Sometimes, she reminds me of the Norma Desmond (Sunset BLVD) character but, she takes it a step further and she has that atrocious accent. Sometimes, her dialogue was hard to decipher. 4. Natalie Wood- She's never entertained me. I find her quite painful. 5. Jimmy Stewart- I've seen 12 or so Stewart movies. I wanted to like him but, he only succeeds in making me want to hurt him. Badly. He sounds like Elmer Fudd 6. John Wayne- Was so overly macho, he came off as a caricature on screen. I think his machismo was a smoke screen. Maybe Mr. Wayne was hiding something. 7. Doris Day- Just. Say. No 8. Robert Mitchum- Did he really have to smirk in every film? Almost every character I've ever seen him play, displays some sort of arrogance. 9. Merle Oberon- She was good at playing the "exotic beauty" without substance. 10. Tony Curtis- Completely ruined "Operation Petticoat" for me. Couldn't even enjoy the vision that is Cary Grant because of Curtis mucking up the scenery. 11. Jerry Lewis- Not funny. Maybe the French should take him 12. Robert Taylor- I don't get it, someone please help me. I've tried and tried again. Maybe the fact that he was a squealer colors how I view his films. 13. Judy Holliday- Her dumb blond schtick wore thin, very quickly. 14. Rita Hayworth- Ugh. 15. Warren Beatty- His arrogance seeps into every character he plays. Poor Warren, he tries so hard to be sexy but, he's gotten very far on so little. 16. Rock Hudson- ????????? 17. Sal Mineo- Just as I don't like hyper masculinity, I don't like actors who are too "soft". 18. Mickey Rooney- The absolute worst. 19. Debbie Reynolds- WHY? 20. Elizabeth Taylor and Douglas Fairbanks Jr are tied for 20th. Both were "pretty faces" and not much more. Anyone or anything considered a "bombshell": Raquel Welch, Jayne Mansfield, Brigette Bardot, Jean Harlow.....NO! I actually have many more but, I won't continue....
