Fifty years ago I saw a movie on tv about a father trying to raise his son alone.
He had a drinking problem, lived upstairs in an apt. near a railroad track.
After some attempts to stop drinking and put his life together his son was killed by a train. Heartbreaker!
What is the name of this movie please?

Fifty years ago on TV a movie of a father trying to raise his son alone.
He drank a lot and would look it ( needed a shave ) but made attempts to stop and get his life on track.
They lived up a flight of stairs in an apt. near a railroad track.
His son was killed by a train near the end...
