Arab Images On Film Evenings- Politics-free
clore replied to hlywdkjk's topic in General Discussions
Kyle, I'm not going to get upset over the targeted post to which he/she responded. I'm pleased to see that we at least did get an explanation and I applaud tcmprogrmmr for doing so. I'm sure it wasn't a fun chore to have to 'fess up. -
Arab Images On Film Evenings- Politics-free
clore replied to hlywdkjk's topic in General Discussions
Only recorded tonight in order to carch the rare Popeye, Porky & Bugs cartoons that were described, discussed and then NOT shown!! I noticed that someone attempted to start another thread on the subject and it was locked down with no reference that the subject bacame a side issue in this thread. Yes I know, they don't like duplicate threads on a subject - except when the subject is Robert Osborne's absence. Not that I'm complaining about the latter but I think the point of someone bringing up a subject such as the missing shorts in a separate thread was to hopefully get an answer. It really isn't fair to tease the sudience, not once but three separate times that I saw, and then provide something other than what was promised. This series is your big highlight of the month TCM and to "bait and switch" is beneath you. It's not unreasonable for someone to expect an explanation. -
Sounds like THE BRIDE WORE BLACK

Jack Lemon: The Prisoner of Second Avenue
clore replied to ohioweaver's topic in Films and Filmmakers
I checked our host - being the proper guest - and they don't seem to have it for sale. A search came up empty. But you can get it at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_6_25?url=search-alias%3Dmovies-tv&field-keywords=prisonerofsecondavenue&x=0&y=0&sprefix=prisonerofsecondavenue You can trust them with your credit card number. -
Two of the Best Musicals Ever Tonight !
clore replied to misswonderly3's topic in General Discussions
Just realized something - in *Oklahoma*, you have Shirley Jones, several singing cowboys, and an Arab ( the peddlar, Eddie Albert) all in one movie. And in Eddie Albert, you have the man who replaced Robert Preston on Broadway as Professor Hill. Just as an FYI, Forrest Tucker and Bert Parks were the road company version. Ironically, when AUNTIE MAME was remade as the musical MAME, it was Preston who played the part that Tucker played originally. -
Osborne could have added to the hyping of the film by mentioning his Private Screenings interview with Anthony Quinn. I really expected him to mention that Quinn had called it one of his own favorite performances if not the favorite, but I guess he let Shaheen have his head and got to the screening of the film ASAP. Quinn was very supportive of the film in discussing it with Mr. Osborne, saying that he hoped that it would find discovery through a re-release.

No jokes about the amazing colossal man figure being erected also will be allowed.

What movies actually have these movie cliches?
clore replied to skimpole's topic in General Discussions
Growing up in the seventies and eighties I often saw this cliche parodied: two lovers running in slow motion towards each other across a field. But what movie actually has that? Why does ELVIRA MADIGAN come to mind? I haven't seen it in over 40 years, but somehow that comes to mind. -
In the very opening of the film, while there is some narration providing the set-up, we see the Earth spinning - spinning in the wrong direction.

The day John Barrymore threw a child across the set
clore replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
Ah me, I did give it a whirl, copied it just fine but when I tried to email it I was told that it had to be converted. When you go to save it and the box shows up, at the bottom of the box should be a "save as type" drop-down menu. Make sure that you choose the "HTML only" option, usually it defaults to "web page complete." -

Thanks clore for explaining how to do that...learn something new everyday here! You're quite welcome. -
You're welcome. I saw that film on a double-bill with THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN 40 years ago.

He was also "the bad guy" in a Randolph Scott western MAN IN THE SADDLE. Knox was also a Nazi in THE TWO-HEADED SPY.

Aww, thank you Rick for the compliment. The resemblence was something I noticed many years ago when I saw O'Malley on an episode of MY THREE SONS that was during Frawley's tenure. For years in my house he was "the guy that looks like William Frawley,"

I could swear he did mention the "devil worshiper" part in his remarks before the movie, although I don't recall if he mentioned the snake and peacock parts. Yes he did mention it, someone had to have mentioned it as I was on the lookout for it. The snake and the peacock - well, I'm not so sure about that. When you're worshipping the devil, does it really matter if you kiss his asp or not? -
Hardly monumental roles, but the Canadian-born Knox did get to play our President again twice in the mid-60s. He was billed in CRACK IN THE MIRROR but his brief bit in YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE din't warrant it. Edited by: clore on Jul 13, 2011 12:46 AM

The vanishing second etc. pages
clore replied to kingrat's topic in PROBLEMS with the Message Boards
I just tried getting to a second page by hitting the "next" indicator. That was fruitless but if you click on the numarals, that will work. I just did that in the General Discussions forum. -
Why is ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM in the pack of musicals? Did Fox mean to package THE KING AND I instead?
-
I see that we're back to the glitch where by clicking "MESSAGE BOARDS" in the upper left corner takes you to the TCM home page rather than to the forum home page. This happened for a few days a couple of weeks ago.

I think that well-meaning fans could also be part of the decision here. My first thought when reading the news was that his apartment building just might become the scene of fans looking for a glimpse. It's not as if it isn't known, it was revealed a few years ago in a NY Times profile. I know that I'm the type who would rather hide while recovering, preferring to be seen at my best.

Does anyone know if these threads can be copied & emailed? Would love to send this one down to her. Just go to the upper left of the screen and click on "file." A drop down menu will appear and "save as " should be among the choices. Save it as an HTML file if you want to retain the look and formatting. Save the file to a folder and then go to your email and retrieve the file from that folder. -
Sorry, Clore, but Lancaster is a much more physical actor than Robert Preston, and the part called for a big, athletic type. You mean someone like Pat Hingle who was originally scheduled to play the part? Unfortunately he fell down an elevator shaft and thus was not available as it took nearly a year to recover from his numerous injuries.

I figured the Ireland character would try to take over the group or something. Instead, he eventually gets cut out of the movie. There are conflicting stories as to why that happened. Hawks said it was because Ireland was unreliable and always getting high on weed. Of of Hawks' biographers said it was because Hawks had intentions on Joanne Dru and he didn't like it when it became obvious that she much preferred Ireland whom she later married.

Thanks a lot, I'll check that out. Looking forward to it.
