Think I'll try to do some research on it. > I just offered up the only thing that crossed my mind as to why something that only appeared for a few seconds would be deleted. I can't claim to have noticed the last time that I saw the film, perhaps six years ago, whether it was there or not. Harmon had been deceased for what, three or four years now so if he had an objection, it had to have happened further back than that.
  2. Not long ago, I spotted Frees looping actor Peter Carsten in DARK OF THE SUN, but it was just in one scene, right before he and Rod Taylor have a fight. Another candidate is Robert Rietty, he's got to be up there with Frees and Pastell.
  3. These days, you never know. Maybe some Bozo objected, claiming that he has the rights to Laurel and Hardy. By that I mean Larry Harmon (the original Bozo albeit not the creator of the character) who has made Laurel and Hardy cartoons and even a feature film using their names and images.
  4. That was it - I knew I spotted him doing Mifune in something the other day. Thanks for the correction. Toshiro Mifune was not in TTT. Besides all the Japanese in it spoke Japanese, obviating the need to have their voices dubbed. But Frees did do a voice in TORA, TORA, TORA, that of actor Shogo Shimada speaking English while playing Ambassador Nomura. It's unmistakably recognizable.
  5. You could spot Frees the other night during TORA, TORA, TORA doing the voice for Toshiro Mifune. True story: When we went to "The Hall of Presidents" at Disney World in 1980, even my six year old son noticed that all the Presidents sounded the same. It was Frees doing all the voices. He even mentioned that it sounded like some cartoon character which I've long since forgotten. It may have been one of those Rudolph or Frosty specials instead of a cartoon. I do remember explaining to him that this was someone known for doing different voices and the wiseguy kid said "They don't sound different." For years there was a rumor that Frees had to loop some dialogue for Bogart in his last film THE HARDER THEY FALL. Even Frees denied it, but it still surfaces now and then.
  6. According to my saved schedules, FALLEN SPAROW aired in Dec 2009, May 2010 and Aug 2010. BLACKWELL'S ISLAND aired in August 2011.
  7. Did the CAGNEY WARNER's set include RKO's GREAT GUY? GREAT GUY was produced by Grand National and is in the public domain now.
  8. I'm not trying to be deliberately obtuse here, but I suggest that your friend try using a search engine with the phrase "copy netflix streams" as the criteria. Several programs do appear in the results. I'm doing it that way so that neither TCM nor I be considered as endorsing the practice. By the way, I confess to a certain level of internet paranoia and given that yesterday was the start date for Google's new privacy (or lack of it) policy to go into effect, one may wish to consider another search engine in this case. http://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-google-privacy-policy-march-1-20120229,0,2129072.story

Netflix says it can't be done, but I'm sure you're right that there are some people who know how to defeat the copyguard built into Netflix streaming. I don't know anyone who's been able to tell me how it's done but I'd sure like to hear from one who can. > Years ago, I knew someone who worked in one of the commercial video duplication companies and he questioned the futility of the copy protection attempts. "Whatever can be done can be undone" he would say.
  10. When I had SD boxes, I used my Samsung similarly. The ZOOM 1 mode would just take any widescreen process and increase the picture proportionately to reach the sides of the screen. No distortion, no need to look at black bars on the side.
  11. An Academy ratio film should look pretty much the same on either channel. There may be a slight difference in picture quality but the dimensions should be identical Yes it should, but recent telecasts of *Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde* and *Joan Of Arc* were actually aired in widescreen on the HD channel but were in the proper ratio on the SD channel. Interesting that one poster claimed to have two SD channels and one HD channel for TCM. On my Time Warner system, I have two HD channels and one SD.
  12. Brian Keith also had a short-lived series titled ARCHER and based on the Ross Macdonald character.
  13. I saw FRENCHIE about 40 years ago. It flips the original a bit, it's Shelley Winters as the titular character who is in search of vengeance while also presiding over the gambling in town. McCrea gets all the folksy lines of the character Destry (renamed in this film), but he appears less motivated than Frenchie. It's pleasant enough, but even the Audie Murphy take on DESTRY is preferable. I really wish they could have dug up THE SILVER CORD for McCrea month.
  14. "Go ahead, laugh at my hair-do. But when UHF finally comes around, I won't have to worry about an antenna."
  15. > {quote:title=Sprocket_Man wrote:}{quote}It was a hallmark of director Josef von Sternberg's films that they were photographed with copious amounts of diffusion, whiich probably accounts for a lot of the appearance you're describing. I suppose that's a possibility, but having seen several other of his films in the last year on the same equipment, I don't recall any similar effect happening. The film is to air again in about a week or so and if anyone wishes to check out the beginning to offer any further comment, I'll all ears, or should I say eyes. Thanks for your suggestion.
  16. Not in close scenes, but it's happening in medium shots. It was especially annoying in the beginning, but less bothersome now. I switched to the SD feed, so that may have lessened the effect. I suspect it's the result of some over-application of edge enhancement.
  17. Is it my set? When you see characters in motion, they appear to have a ray shining on them, sort of like a lens flare effect. It's worse than the old days of ghosting when we relied on rabbit ears. Is this part of the "remastering" process done by Hypercube - a company that I associate with hyperbole when it comes to claims of restoration.
  18. I was working by the time the show reached its peak. I only saw a few episodes in the very beginning when it was more Bronte than Barnabas.
  19. Don't worry, I didn't presume you were complaining about HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS airing. I was watching it also, thinking back to the time that I took my girlfriend to see it way back in 1970 and she was so thrilled since she watched the show daily.
  20. House of Dark Shadows was not, I believe, nominated for any Oscars either- yet it was part of the "Governer's Awards" tribute at the very start of the month as an example of the work of makeup artiste Dick Smith. Actually, HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS aired on January 31 at 10pm Eastern time.
  21. > {quote:title=Hibi wrote:}{quote} > Anyone notice they are showing Nun's Story again when they just showed it a week or so ago??? Has anyone noticed other Oscar month repeats??? I cant remember this happening before. And Sat. we get Some Like It Hot again! Aargh. Is that Drew's debut??? This happened because it was noticed that the film originally scheduled for today, BATTLE OF THE BULGE, was not nominated for any Oscars. A few of us suggested alternatives and I guess A NUN'S STORY was the most convenient option: http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?threadID=163377&tstart=0
  22. I remember that they were the first to air STAR WARS on TV, but other than that, I can't recall much other than that they also had some rock concerts. We didn't get it where I live, but I remember reading about it in the trades. We had the similar WHT - Wometco Home Theater - which aired mostly movies of recent vintage on a UHF channel for which you needed the descrambler. The menu was rather limited and we didn't subscribe for very long.
  23. > {quote:title=clore wrote:}{quote}How about THE NUN'S STORY? It clocks in at 149 minutes. Well, that was a good guess, that's the replacement for BATTLE OF THE BULGE. My apologies to all as it did just air on the 15th. Still, congrats to the OP who noticed the error and to the person who spotted this thread and made the correction.
  24. I found an error while playing Trivial Pursuit, one of the movie or TV editions. It had to do with crediting Connie Stevens as a regular on SURFSIDE SIX when actually it was HAWAIIAN EYE. So I sent them a letter, just an FYI for future reference and I included an anecdote about how I could rarely find anyone who wanted to play the game with me unless we were playing partners. They actually sent a response and told me that such errors existed on purpose for the sake of validating any potential copyright infringement. It also said that there were other such intentional errors in the game and they wished me luck in finding them.
  25. That thread that has the unofficial May schedule has the 1920 LAST OF THE MOHICANS listed for May 20 at 12am.
