A Complaint ! What a way to start the New Year!
clore replied to misswonderly3's topic in General Discussions
I deliberately watched the intro to PANIC IN THE STREETS to see if a theme was mentioned. Apparently what linked the films was a "time is running out" theme to coincide with the end of the year. I didn't watch one of them and so far today the schedule has had quite a few of "TCM's Greatest Hits" that I've yet to be interested in turning the set on. I mean c'mon, THE SEARCHERS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS have both aired within the last five days. I can hear the programmers now "How can he not be interested, neither of them has aired since last year!" I will make it a point to watch LOVER COME BACK at 8pm as it's my favorite of the Day/Hudson pairings. -
Antenna TV had a Hitchcock marathon on Halloween weekend. If you watch them after midnight, every break has an ad for some 1-800 number that starts with a blonde woman saying "I like guys my age, I like guys younger than me, and I just love guys older than me." Then a nasal-sounding brunette comes on and says "Sometimes we just talk, and sometimes it gets soooo good, we just have to take it to the next level. You can't have fun if you don't make the call." I figure that maybe I could combine that with the other ad and come up with "Cash4Golddiggers."

> {quote:title=MaryLyn2 wrote:}{quote}I missed it. The line up of movies last night did not appeal to me, so I did not watch TCM. I watched Burns and Allen and the Jack Benny Show. I was watching those shows on Antenna TV also. I probably saw a half-dozen of each, but I came close to screaming out loud. It seems that every break had the Cash4Gold ad, the only difference is that one spot is longer than the other and has two extra testimonials. After the Benny show with Johnny Carson, I went to my DVD collection and had my own BARNEY MILLER marathon.

I figure that rights to this film might be owned to some other company, since it turns up on different non-TCM channels. It's a Paramount title now controlled by MCA. I bought a box set for my brother last year and it had this plus the other four titles that they made for Paramount. It's a bit crude, but not much more so than ANIMAL CRACKERS. Why TCM would air the other ones and not this one is a puzzlement.

ALERT: Rarely shown classic on right now on TCM-"The Heiress"(1949)

> {quote:title=mrroberts wrote:}{quote} > Anyone take notice, *Gaslight* is scheduled for next week. Look at New Year's Day - they're running THE SEARCHERS which ended just a half-hour ago and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND which just aired on Tuesday. Plus MR. SMITH GFOES TO WASHINGTON which seems to air every month. -
> {quote:title=LillyS wrote:}{quote} > ...and today when I checked the TCM homepage, he has completely disappeared and Angela Landsbury has taken his place all too quickly. There's no need for TCM to continue to promote Powell as SOTM since the series is now over and done. It would be like a supermarket leaving the "on sale" sticker on the shelf on the day after the sale ended. Also, the holiday weekend probably has something to do with getting ahead on things. Otherwise some Lansbury fan could come along on January 1 and complain that Powell was still up and since it's now January, Lansbury should be featured.

> {quote:title=Dargo wrote:}{quote} You of course meant that comment about *Special Bulletin*, not *QB VII*. But yeah, I think the network was trying to avoid another "Grover's Mill, NJ" incident there. The fiorst time that NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD aired on WABC-TV in NYC, anytime they showed the "news" footage within the film, there was a disclaimer on the bottom of the screen that "this is a dramatization." Whew, i was really worried about zombies attacking my home Obn the subject of Grover's Mill, the TV-Movie THE NIGHT THAT PANICKED AMERICA is a particular favorite of mine as it dramatizes the Welles broadcast and its effect. . -
Terrible picture quality. An open letter to the bigwigs.
clore replied to JimmyD123's topic in General Discussions
I won't agree in general with the OP, but I did watch CLOSE ENCOUNTERS last night as I only recently traded up to HD boxes and I thought that the print looked terrible. Muddy and with lots of what I call dandruff. Lots of specks going on, especially apparent in the dark scenes. -
> {quote:title=Arturo wrote:}{quote} > > My bad. You are so right LOL. Not being into made for TV movies, or Knot's Landing reruns, I haven't seen or even thought of the beautiful Mills since the last millenium. Donna Mills was sort of the girl-next-door type in PLAY MISTY FOR ME, but even Lucretia Borgia would come off that way next to Jessica Walter as a raving psycho. But then again, Jeanne Crain shed her image for THE MAN WITHOUT A STAR and soon June Allyson was THE SHRIKE, driving Jose Ferrer to attempt suicide.

popular actors who are not your favorites
clore replied to FloydDBarber's topic in General Discussions
I have a longtime friend and whenever someone mentions Marlene Dietrich, he says "I really liked her in that film where she's a woman of dubious morals, singing in a saloon." -
Arturo, not to pick on your fine, well-written post... I just have to believe that you meant Donna Reed, not Donna Mills. Otherwise, kudos to your comments.

"Casting Against Type" Greatest Moment
clore replied to Ascotrudgeracer's topic in General Discussions
Yes, I have it on in the background, my back is to the TV when I'm at the PC. But I was also mindful of the close of the film, and the request made: "The management of this theater suggests that for the greater entertainment of your friends who have not yet seen the picture you will not divulge to anyone the secret of the ending of Witness for the Prosecution." -
"Casting Against Type" Greatest Moment
clore replied to Ascotrudgeracer's topic in General Discussions
As far as Witness for the Prosecution being against type, by then he was as far away as he could get from Zanuck and was anxious for that type of part. It's almost impossible for me to make a case for why Power really wasn't cast against type in the film. SPOILER DOWN BELOW Reading further can be hazardous to your enjoyment of WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION. It's only at the very end of a first viewing that one realizes that Power was playing upon his image until the trial is over. -

And here I was, thinking it was a delayed Bogart tribue as his b-day was Christmas day. Why couldn't they crank out some films which have a greater percentage of footage for Mr. Greenstreet? Such as THE VERDICT, THREE STRANGERS or THE MASK OF DIMITRIOS. It could have been worse, we could have had the staff write an intro for Bob or Ben stating that Greenstreet had one of his best roles in THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE.

> {quote:title=kriegerg69 wrote:}{quote} > Whatever....it seems that all some people do is to nitpick on every little inaccuracy in Robert's intros, instead of spending time ENJOYING the movie. ] I've yet to read of anyone saying that it spoils their enjoyment of the film. Most seem to be of the mindset that such goofs don't present Mr. Osborne in the proper manner, or that it shows him being ill-prepared by his staff. I've made such comments, I'll admit that. But if I saw Mr. Osborne giving a flawless intro while his hair had an Alfalfa cowlick sticking up, and only half his face bronzed, I'd blame the make-up person for not doing his job properly. If he came out all dressed impeccably except for a big mustard stain on his jacket, I'd blame wardrobe for not noticing. Ditto if his shirttail was sticking out of his open zipper.. I doubt that anyone in this forum would show up to say that we should be happy just to see him show up, or "so what if he appears slovenly, at least he's there." But such things are not likely to happen because they are something that others (such as the cameraman) would likely spot, so the make-up person and the wardrobe person are easily "accountable" and thus one could say forced by that into doing his job properly. Not so with the words written for Mr. Osborne. Sometimes it has appeared that a researcher is too dependent on either a failing memory, such as crediting William Keighley instead of Michael Curtiz for THE KENNEL MURDER CASE or upon the likelihood of others on the staff to not notice the errors. Maybe the person is just too lazy to use the TCM data base at his fingertips. Why should this person have the continued luxury of slacking off just because his errors are less apparent? So, for those who may think that correcting the script errors isn't appropriate, just how far would you let the make-up or wardrobe departments fail to properly prepare Robert Osborne for the camera before you commented in this forum?

OK, let me ask if you have this problem with any other channels. For example, comparing HBO SD to HBO HD. If it's isolated to just TCM, then yes, there's a good chance that something is wrong at the Cox Cable end and not your hardware. Also, if you take the DVD recorder out of the line, and just go from the cable box to the TV set, does the problem still exist? I feel for you, it would drive me nuts.

The impression that I get is that if he is watching MEET JOHN DOE right now, on the SD channel, his image has black bars only on the sides. But if he turns to the HD channel, he gets bars all around the image.

But Since You Went Away twice in one week was a bit much. Sheesh. To air it as part of a tribute to Ruth Roman is really stretching it. She gets what, 30 seconds out of a 3-hour movie? My brother called me the other day to say that on Sunday he turned on the TV and saw that SINCE YOU WENT AWAY was coming on and that he changed the channel as he's seen the film enough. He called me when he got home from work on Thursday and saw that the film was almost over. "I know it's a long movie, but I didn't remember it being several days long" he said. I said "No, it just seems that long." I do sort of like the cheater in the beginning. One swears that finally we have a shot of the right side of Claudette Colbert's face, but it turns out that she's looking into a mirror.

Chances are good that you need to adjust the cable box settings. It may not be set for HD. Did your box come with an instruction manual? If not, try a Google search using the manufacturer and model number of the cable box. What I think is happening is that you need to set the box to a 1080 resolution and a 16X9 screen size. I had a similar problem when I got my HD boxes several weeks ago. I found the manual on-line in PDF form and made the necessary adjustments.

You're quite welcome and all my best wishes to you and your family.
