Yes, shearerchic, Joe Mankiewicz really screwed Linda over by promising her the lead in Contessa and then giving it to Ava. Linda could have been really interesting in that part. However, even though Fox dumped Linda (they're idiots), i enjoyed Linda in Island Of Desire, Blackbeard The Pirate, Second Chance, and Dakota Incident. And i'm really looking forward to seeing someday The Lady Pays Off, Night Without Sleep, The 13th Letter, This Is My Love, Zero Hour, and Black Spurs. I'm perplexed as to why Fox would dump Linda soon after she had a huge hit with A Letter To Three Wives?? It's not like she was old or unattractive. Maybe she asked for a raise and they were too cheap...

Probably one of my fave films as well if Linda & Lana had starred together. Larry, here's a great consolation prize: Linda & Rita in Blood And Sand (yowza). And Lana with Hedy in Ziegfeld Girl (hoo-ray for all mankind). I would love to be in Linda's publicity dept. but i'm too biased. Linda's darn near perfect and i would get canned for daydreaming about her. Who can blame me? Larry, did you know that Lana & Linda were dating Howard Hughes on & off at the same time during the 1940's? I guess HH couldn't make up his mind?

Hi Moira. And thank you very much for the enlightenment on the feud between Bogie and Ida. I never realized Mayo Methot was such a troublemaker or Bogie such a prankster. Is Moira your real first name? It reminds me of one of my favorite british actresses, Moira Lister. Thanks again for the info. It doesn't seem like they hated each other after all.

I like or love about 110 classic actresses and i'm proud to say that Ida is in my all-time top 10 at # 8. She is great and i especially enjoy her in They Drive By Night, The Hard Way, The Man I Love, and Road House. I admire the way Ida really gives it her all when playing an unsavory woman, the same way Susan Hayward and Bette Davis do. I was really surprised to learn from Robert Osborne one night that Ida and Bogie didn't get along at all. Who knew? Ida is fascinating to watch in just about anything. Ida = a great talent. Her Warner Brothers years were sublime imo. As a pre-teen, i got to see Ida at the drive-in in Food Of The Gods. I sure was scared that night!!

I so agree with you Arturo. I could never tire of seeing luminous Linda in Forever Amber. The movie has great plot and pacing and i love when Linda tells off Richard Hadyn with the fire of London in the background. I also really like George Sanders, Richard Greene, and Cornel Wilde. I love the brawl between Linda and Margaret Wycherly. FA is one of my five favorite classic films. I need to watch it again. Linda's face in this movie is the perfection of female beauty. Peverell Marley was one lucky dude.

I love everything Mae West. She was a genius at marketing herself and her films are a hoot as said by another poster earlier. I think she was sexy, ballsy, and one-of-a-kind. Mae kept everyone waiting on the set of Myra Breckenridge one day. When she finally emerged from her trailer with a young guy she walked over to the other actors and Rex Reed asked her what she had been doing all that time? Mae replied "Well, we weren't playing scrabble". LOL!! Mae was 76 years young at the time.

George Sanders is one of my five favorite classic male movie stars. He always made acting look so easy and flawless. I have to say George is brilliant in Death Of A Scoundrel and very good in Sundown, Green Hell, Forever Amber, I Can Get It For You Wholesale, The Lodger, and The Fan. He has starred opposite many of my favorite actresses, he was so lucky. I love the way he toys with Anne Baxter in All About Eve. Hats off to you, George Sanders. His bro Tom Conway was fun to watch as well.

Tina Louise was the first woman i ever had a crush on. I was watching reruns of Gilligan's Island and i was all of five years old. Tina was so great lookin' for a long time. I saw The Warrior Empress about 17 years ago. It was good. Tina looked great. I would like to view for the first time ever God's Little Acre, Armored Command, and Siege Of Syracuse, but i guess i'll have to be patient for now. Offbeat interests are fun!!

I actually still have this AFI special from June 99 on a VHS tape hosted by Shirley Temple. The actor and actress i would've liked to see included is Robert Taylor and Lana Turner. Both were in tons o' movies and remained top stars longer than most.
The first time i watched this show back in 99, i remember the biggest surprise on the list to my sheer delight... my girl Mae West. I was pleasantly shocked. I love this woman. I still watch her films when i can. I understand that gagman, miss musical, and ILRM have every right to not see Mae as the comic genius ahead of her time as i do. But please don't throw her off the list or i will cry all over my keyboard. I would love to throw about 13 people off each list and replace them with people i like but that wouldn't be fair. And I'm not an AFI member. Not yet, insert evil laughter.

To Each His Own from 1946. It has one of the best endings of any movie i have ever seen. I hope that one day TCM can show it or it can be out on DVD.
This Love Of Ours from 1945 with Merle Oberon and Claude Rains. Another great ending that will have you reaching for a kleenex.

Well then my individual heart proclaims that # 3, 6, or 7 should have won. Just kidding. It was a fun thread and the majority has spoken.

I thought McQueen was great in The Towering Inferno and Papillon. I really liked Carole in In Name Only. Film Noir is my absolute favorite genre also. Laura is great and moody and has a great cast. I also loved Dragonwyck w/ Tierney and Price. Welcome aboard.

Thanks, Miss G. for your kind words on my fave movies list. I first saw Dishonored Lady twenty years ago and it has always been my fave Hedy film. Her looks are to die for in DL and i love the pacing and the plot. I am the proud owner of the double-set VHS box of Dishonored Lady and Algiers. Glad you have seen DL and don't think i'm crazy for always putting it on my fave classic films list. After all it stars my favorite movie star ever and she also produced it. It was so hard to stop at naming just two films per letter, but i guess i'll try and hold back. My 94 year old grandmother loves How Green Was My Valley, your H pick. I bought her the dvd this past Christmas along with Inn Of The Sixth Happiness, another of her favorites.

Monik, that is so cool that Clark & Vivien are your favorite actors. I never would have guessed those two out of all the classic possibilities. I was raised twenty minutes away from Gable's birthplace of Cadiz, Ohio. I go back there to visit family a few times a year and drive past the Clark Gable Museum in Cadiz. As for Viv, i am crazy for her in Duvivier's version of Anna Karenina from 1948. Viv looks so good amidst all that snow. Not to be disagreeable, but i really enjoyed A&E's Biographies of Gable and Leigh. It helped me to understand what made them tick and what motivated their lives. What did you feel was unrealistic? Maybe you spotted something that escaped me.

I really liked the third installment as they focused more on the female performers. It was fun to see and listen to June, Cyd, Lena, Esther, Ann, Debbie, and see clips of Betty Hutton, Ava, Dolores Gray...
-
You know, Deborah is the one actress i have no idea who she may have had an affair with. I saw her Biography on A&E and in it they tried to paint her as Saint Deborah. Hopefully some of our friendly posters could chime in who have read her bio/autobio and help you with this info. Now you've got me curious as well... hmmm

I'd say her best film of the few i've seen is Edward, My Son. DK's best leading men are imo Gregory Peck, Clark Gable, and Robert Taylor.
-
My grandmother is 94 and a half years old and her favorite movie ever is An Affair To Remember with DK and CG. I always tease her and say i never heard of a lady who did not like Cary Grant.
I think DK did a great job in Edward, My Son, imo.

You are most welcome AvaG. Ava would be so happy to know she is not forgotten and from what i've read, Ava had a super-exciting life. Good for her. I went to the Ava Gardner Museum in Smithfield, N.C. in 2004. They had her dresses from films, pictures of her male co-stars, lots of pics of Ava, Ava magnets and postcards...
I've read on other threads that you also love Bette, Rita, and Lana. As do I. These three are three of my top six overall favorites. I started watching classic films in 1988 as the current movies of that time were mostly crappy.
-
Hi AvaG. I did not know she crawled across the floor after having a stroke. I love her feistiness. Ethel Merman also crawled across the floor after suffering a stroke in 1982. How cool is it that a stroke could not destroy the spirits of Ava, Ethel, and Bette Davis to name just a few.
Your love of Ava is really cool and upbeat. I know that Ava is smiling down on all those who have not forgotten her, especially you AvaG, one of her biggest fans!! I still can't get over how great she looked in Earthquake, 34 years after her arrival in Hollywood!

Hi there Miss G.
And for Ava, living well and enjoying her life to the hilt is the best revenge. I ain't mad at cha Ava. She must have had an incredibly exciting life from what i've read with many highs and lows.

I love it when she sings... or talks and mispronounces the words (on purpose). Carmen looks super in technicolor. I always enjoy her colorful outfits and unique persona. How could anyone be in a bad mood when Carmen starts singing and gives you that winning smile??

Rohanaka, Maureen is a vision in Flame Of Araby from 1951 with Jeff Chandler and another fave of mine with MO is At Sword's Point from 1951, both in color. Those pics posted by Miss Goddess are sinful gorgeous. I saw Maureen on Larry King a few years ago and was dumbstruck at how beautiful she looked for 82 years. She told Larry she wanted to live to be 102. Here's hoping she gets her wish! She really looked good in The Rare Breed.
