  1. Now this was my kind of movie. I was never bored during it, not once. I always liked Stephen Boyd in other movies. He is soooo deliciously evil in The Oscar i felt like i was watching J.R. Ewing on Dallas. Mr. Boyd was such a scumbag in this film it also reminded me of the great George Sanders in Death Of A Scoundrel or Kirk Douglas in Champion or Bad And The Beautiful. It's a shame Stephen died so young at 45 in real life. I really enjoyed Mr. Boyd in Island In The Sun, Abandon Ship, and The Best Of Everything. The Oscar was a hoot. Loved seeing Eleanor Parker and Merle Oberon and loved it when Joe Cotten told Frankie Faine off at that outdoor pre-oscar party. I didn't recognize Peter Lawford at first but his voice was so familiar. I'm so glad i watched this movie. Now, I would love TCM to trot out The Idol from 1966. It's supposed to be another turkey and i would love to finally see it, please??

  2. O.K. Ciney. From my male eyes, it would have to go down like this:

    1. Hedy

    2. Linda D.

    3. Lana

    4. Susan H.

    5. Rita

    6. Jane Russell

    7. Ida Lupino

    8. Ann Sheridan

    9. Merle Oberon

    10. Yvonne D.

    11. Kay Francis

    12. Alexis S.

    13. Veronica

    14. Jennifer

    15. Gene

    16. Loretta

  3. To me, what is striking about Ava is how well she aged into the 1970's. I thought she still had those beautiful, killer looks in Earthquake and Cassandra Crossing. It's a pleasure to look at her face and her body language in these films reeks of confidence and star quality. Ava comes off like: " I know i still look good. How you like me now? ". Ava really works her mojo in these films. I'm impressed with her love of life.

  4. My favorite Rita films are Gilda, Affair In Trinidad, and They Came To Cordura. Easily, imo, the best and most exciting female dancer i've ever seen on screen. Also, the actress with the sexiest voice ever. I thought she looked really good in Pal Joey, much better than KN and i like Kim. I wouldn't say she's THE most beautiful, but nearly. I'd put Rita at # 4 or 5 overall. Still, Rita is one of the greatest stars to ever come out of Hollywood and was over the top alluring as the sublime Gilda Munson. She is such a smart*ss as Gilda... i love this woman mucho.

  5. I can't wait to hopefully someday see Margaret Lockwood in Bedelia, The Wicked Lady, and The Man In Grey, and probably anything this beautiful actress is in.

I love everything Diana Dors and would love to see more of her "bad girl" films.

Also, Dirk Bogarde is very good in anything and has a great speaking voice.

  6. I am fond of Ginger but for different reasons than you are. I'm not big on musicals as a genre. But i have discovered the great GR in films that are more to my taste: Twist Of Fate and The Black Widow, both 1954. I prefer to see GR in dramas or noirs. She is certainly beautiful and very talented and has a unique voice. The singer Cher really loves GR and her movies with Fred.

  7. Thank you. I'll take Anita over that overwrought hamlet crap any day of the week. At least Anita can hold my attention, unlike hamlet. I'll be outta town on saturday, but i'll beg one of my brothers to tape it for me. Thanks again.

  8. Hi Larry. You are most welcome. Elaine Stewart is great to me so i had to mention her. She is beautiful and sultry on screen and i've heard that she is enjoying great health and has aged very well. Elaine will be 79 this saturday so happy birthday to Elaine who first gained attention as a Conover model.

And Larry, you must have great taste in friends because i fell in love with Moira Lister in 1984 after seeing her brilliant performance in Abandon Ship (my fave classic movie). I just saw Moira in The Limping Man and she is imo one of the most beautiful movie blondes. Moira died in October of 2007 at age 84. I'm looking forward to seeing more films with Moira, especially when she plays a not-so-nice type.

  9. I LOVE JJ and i didn't know she was offered Laura. I had heard Hedy was offered Laura and turned it down. I really enjoy when Jennifer plays against type as in Ruby Gentry, Madame Bovary, and of course Duel In The Sun. I've never seen Song Of Bernadette. Is it any good??

  10. Hi Larry. Ann was always such a sweetheart... and she knew how to pick friends. Ann was also very good friends with the ultra-gorgeous Rita Hayworth. They both worked at Columbia for years until Ann moved over to MGM for Easter Parade. I was sad when Ann's cancer took over and she died in Jan. of 2004 at age 80. Speaking of Texas, three of my other faves were born there: Ann Sheridan, Joan Crawford, and Cyd Charisse.

  11. You never have taken credit for other's research, so you'll always be aces with me. Plus we share a love for the greats: Hedy, Frieda, Linda, Ella, Bette... How are things in the Big Apple?? Are you doing well?... and trying to catch up on your taped from TCM movies and your DVD purchased films?? I'm finally making some progress watching my tapes/dvd's. I highly recommend Carrie from 1952 with Olivier & Jennifer Jones. I just finished it. The story was excellent. It also had Eddie Albert & Miriam Hopkins. I read that you like Alice Faye. See Hello, Frisco, Hello if you haven't seen it yet. Alice in technicolor singing with great costumes and secretly longing for John Payne. Have a fun week and take care!! P.S. -- How did Anita Ekberg keep her dress up in the fountain scene of La Dolce Vita?? There were no straps on her gown!

  12. Thank you Miss G. You posted my fave pic of Linda: the b&w one where she's leaning against a satin chair. Her face is extraordinary to look at, what a perfect arrangement of the human form is our Linda Darnell. Miss G., did you know, by the way, that in the early forties, Linda used to have lunches with Betty Grable, Susan Hayward, and Lana Turner all at the same time?? Lana said they would always try to outdress each other and regale each other with their latest, upcoming film projects. Can you imagine that much beauty at one table??

  13. You are so right. How could anyone love a daughter as disgusting, selfish, and evil as Ann Blyth in MP?? As fantastic as Blyth was i would've voted for Eve Arden all the way!! Eve is great in MP. She cuts Zachary Scott, Ann Blyth, and Jack Carson to shreds with her sarcastic barbs during this highly enjoyable film noir. Blyth's performance is really noteworthy as she is a sweetheart in real life. Great job by all in this film. One of the most entertaining classics i've ever seen and can't wait to see again. I love Warner Brothers films from the 1940's.

  14. Yo, Omar, it was i who mentioned Sarita Montiel, one of my fave Spanish Actresses. I'm glad to hear she's doing so well and still looks great. I really became a fan when i saw her in Serenade many years ago with Joan Fontaine and Mario Lanza.

  15. If you like Mamie, try to get your hands on a copy of the autobiography she put out in the late 1980's or early 90's. She kisses and tells on everybody!! This woman was really enjoying life in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. I saw Mamie one afternoon on the old Geraldo talk show soon after her book came out. Mamie was dishing about some of the Hollywood actors she had slept with. One very prudish lady stood up in the audience and said "i think it's disgusting for a lady to talk about her private life this way". A completely unrepentant Mamie responded "well... you can't please everybody". Mamie looked pretty good that day by the way, and very confident.

  16. If you're ever in Columbus, Ohio, i will gladly let you watch both shows in my living room. I have both on old VHS tapes that are in pretty good condition. I will be watching the one with Virginia any day now as talking about it with you guys has reminded me how fun the show is and full of gossip about the old days. You are so right. Virginia had beautiful hair. Did you ever notice in White Heat, her hair looks perfect?? And please, please, there is no need to sell your hair. It keeps the raindrops off of your head! LOL!

  17. You are welcome Nando. Mamie rules! I don't think she looks bad for 77. She has had help though.

Hi Cinemaven. I know Ms. Ekberg has aged. When i called her beautiful i was referring to the 50's, 60's, and 70's - the time i prefer to think of her when she was hott. She has a healthy attitude about life though, which is refreshing.

Here's a few more ladies we forgot to mention that are still with us: Joan Collins, Piper Laurie, Martha Hyer, Terry Moore, Carroll Baker, Linda Cristal, and Brigitte Bardot.

  18. Hi Ava. You are right. Virginia was soooo pretty, she looked great with all her co-stars and made them look better. I also love her honesty to spill the beans on people. Virginia was on the Vicki Lawrence talk show in April, 1993 and VM still looked really good at 72 years old. She said Gregory Peck was the best kisser. Ronald Reagan was the nicest gentleman. She was afraid of Burt Lancaster because he had so many big teeth she thought Burt would break her teeth when they kissed. She thought Danny Kaye was annoying because he was very moody on set - sometimes happy, other times sad. VM said Jack Palance was the weirdest man she ever met because the scene called for him to pet a rabbit. He proceeded to run around the set really fast to get ready for the scene which VM thought very odd. Jack was so overly pumped when he went to pet the rabbit, he petted it too rough and the rabbit went to the bathroom all over Jack as the rabbit was frightened of him. Virginia was the most outgoing of the guests that day which also included Jane Russell, Dorothy Malone, Dorothy Lamour, and Margaret O'Brien. One of the most enjoyable hours of tv i have ever seen. Vicki also did another show like this one in December, 1992 with June Allyson, Ann Miller, Janet Leigh, Gloria DeHaven, and later in the show Mickey Rooney.

  19. May i add a few ladies that are still with us that i haven't seen on these lists yet?? The beautiful Elaine Stewart, beautiful Mamie Van Doren, Lita Baron (Mrs. Rory Calhoun), Myrna Dell, Rosemarie Bowe (Mrs. Robert Stack), Sarita Montiel, Mitzi Gaynor, Taina Elg, Sophia Loren, Margaret O'Brien, beautiful Anita Ekberg, Gloria DeHaven, and the great Elizabeth Taylor.

By the way, i thought Marsha Hunt was great in The Valley Of Decision and Smash-Up:The Story Of A Woman.

  20. I saw this film about five weeks ago on FMC. You are right. The film is o.k. at best. It seems to be missing something. The technicolor is superb, Gene looks great and is lit very well. One thing i noticed that pleased me: Fox must have seen potential in Miss Tierney as they are giving Gene and this movie the full-court press. This was only her second or third film ever and she already warranted technicolor. I'm impressed. Gene went on to make so many good movies, it's easy to give her a pass on this effort. We love you Gene Tierney!!
