  1. Really, how could anyone not love this woman?? I especially love Virginia in crime and adventure movies and she's not bad in westerns either. The real treat is getting to look at her flawless face and figure. Virginia was so hot in White Heat, Flaxy Martin, Smart Girls Don't Talk, and Congo Crossing. A beautiful lady and a nice one too.

  2. I have heard this rumor as well but it has never been proven. On A&E's Biography of Carole Lombard, they state that Carole was in a big rush to get back to Clark as she simply missed him terribly. Carole's mother begged her to just take the train so Carole said we'll flip a coin and that will decide it. And the rest is history. Lana did mention in her autobio that there was this ugly rumor going around as to why Carole wanted to get back so fast, that Clark & Lana were having a torrid fling. Lana said in her autobio that there was no truth to the rumor even though she did admire Clark as a person. Clark was usually cheating on Carole with Virginia Grey but other starlets/women as well. He was flawed that way and tried to hide it from Carole so as not to hurt her or humiliate her to all of tinseltown.

  3. I have to say Fox MC has really stepped it up lately. I have enjoyed recently Ladies In Love with Loretta and Tyrone dating in the movie. They both looked really good together but Constance Bennett stole the show for me with her smoky voice and ultra-chic charm.

Also, i saw I Was An Adventuress with Vera Zorina and Richard Greene, another great-looking couple with loads o' chemistry.

And i really enjoyed Hello Frisco Hello. Musicals aren't really my thing but it actually had a decent story and the technicolor was superb. John Payne was cool as always and Alice Faye was likeable and her costumes were great. However, it was Lynn Bari who i fell in love with yet again for being the mega-beautiful bad, bad girl with the great speaking voice.

I taped Kentucky yesterday; haven't seen it yet. It will most likely be good as it has two of my faves: Loretta Young and Richard Greene.

  4. Hi Cashette. I love Jeanine Basinger. She has said very nice things about a lot of my favorites, especially Lana Turner. Jeanine is a film historian so it sounds like her book TSM could be a good read. I might have to buy it next time i'm at B&N. You are so lucky to have Because Of You on tape. I've only seen it the one time many years ago and remember it was quite good. I thought pairing Loretta with Jeff Chandler was interesting and different but it worked well. I hope Cafe Metropole lives up to your anticipation of it. Let me know if it has a really good plot and you would recommend it.

  5. This movie is one of my favorites of all time. Marlon Brando was offered the role of Sinuhe first. He turned it down. Then Farley Granger. He turned it down because Brando did. I thought Edmund Purdom was well cast. Nefer was a witch. If i was Sinuhe i would've given her a box with a spitting cobra in it. This was the film where Gene Tierney noticed that her mental faculties were beginning to slip. Bella Darvi was great as Nefer even if i wanted to throttle her.

  6. It will be July soon and you can purchase the Ty Power collection and enjoy it any time you want. How cool is that? I've never seen Cafe Metropole. I knew Loretta was in it but i didn't realize Tyrone was in it as well. It must be a romance as TP & LY are really awesome-looking together. It seems like they are really in love in their movies. I am surprised there isn't a LY collection yet as she did a few epics in the 30's and had some box office hits in the mid and late 40's. Even Fox MC is starting to push LY more often. They showed Kentucky and Ladies In Love for the first time in three and a half years. Cashette, if you ever get the chance, i highly recommend Because Of You from 1952. It has a good plot and you might need a kleenex.

  7. Hedger, I think you are great and love to read your posts as I am off the deep end for Hedy myself. It's nice to read other posters who like the same people i do. It's not your fault you have great taste in actresses!! LOL. I think you even stepped in to defend Hedy when a newbie was bashing her. Bravo, Hedger. Encore. Keep up the good posting and have a great week. Calling someone a troll is mild compared to the ranting, raving, and curse words i have seen on these boards.

  8. I agree S&D was one of her best performances. Hedy actually seems like she's having fun with Delilah and really striving to show that Delilah is not only devious and rotten, but way underneath is a loving and compassionate woman when blind Samson "opens her eyes".

I don't think Hollywood had any idea how to properly showcase her different style of talent. That being said, i think Hedy comes across quite well in Algiers, Ziegfeld Girl, Crossroads, White Cargo, The Conspirators, Strange Woman, Dishonored Lady, and Female Animal.

And the critics gave Hedy very good reviews in Boom Town, Comrade X, H M Pulham Esq, and Tortilla Flat, so it would seem that Hedy's acting career was not a complete waste of time. Personally, i think she's great because she is different. One has to look beyond the incredible beauty to see the real woman. A woman who did not think she was beautiful at all and had a sense of humor about herself and a sharp intellect. Hedy is the living end of womanhood for me.

  9. Just finished watching Ladies In Love from 1936 on the Fox MC. Loretta was in love with Tyrone Power's character. They looked really great together and very young, no pun intended. Loretta was competing with Janet Gaynor, Constance Bennett, and Simone Simon to see which gal came across as the cutest/best-looking. Loretta had that sparkle in her eyes as always.

  10. I liked it. The plot was murky and kept me interested in trying to figure out who was who. The film was moody and mysterious and i liked the mexican scenery. I enjoyed Glenn Ford and Diana Lynn, but frankly, i would watch anything with the luscious Patricia Medina who is totally smokin' hot gorgeous.

  11. Here's my top three actress beauties:

    1. Hedy Lamarr - duh, of course.

    2. Linda Darnell - a close, close second, really like one and a half!!

    3. Lana Turner - was still gorgeous in her sixties, because she cared.

Thank you to the poster who cited Constance Bennett -- love her!!

Thanks to the poster who cited Alexis, Ella, and Rita as their first three honorable mentions -- a big yaaayyy from me.

And chinaseas, love that you cited Kay and Ann S. -- i agree they are awesome!

My honorable mentions: Susan H., Rita H., Jane R., Bette, Ida, Ann S., Merle, Joan C., Alexis...

  12. 1,000 % NO. When he accepted his oscar a few years ago, his speech was so arrogant i wanted to puke. Now that he's a big deal (make me barf) there seems to be no end to his endless lectures to us peons about how he is so much more in touch with the human spirit and struggle than we or anyone else is. GC is a typical overpaid hwood **** who has lost touch with the everyday folks who struggle in the real world. His overly-superior attitude and immense sense of entitlement make him persona non grata with me and that goes for most of the self-indulgent cretins in hwood today.

  13. The Second Face from 1950 with Ella Raines, Bruce Bennett, and Rita Johnson.

Ella plays a fashion designer who is unattractive to be polite. She finds a lot of doors closed to her because of the way she looks. Ella gets into an accident and a plastic surgeon rebuilds her face. And now she is gorgeous. She sets out to wreak revenge on all those men who treated her like crap and made fun of her because she was homely before. And now all of these men are begging to go out with her. But one of her older, rich beaus pulls her aside and tells her revenge will not make her happy in the end. What will she do?? Will there be a happy ending?? There's also two tons of drama before Ella gets into the accident. Great movie with a great message. I purchased a vhs copy off of Movies Unlimited.com two years ago.

  14. One of the best film noir actresses ever. I wish she would have made more movies into the late 60's. I loved her in Too Late For Tears and Desert Fury. Liz is one lady who i look forward to watching in anything. Would love to see Paid In Full someday! I hope she lives to be 102.

  15. Bargar, I thought Vivien was a vision in Anna K., my favorite movie of hers.

Back on topic, Wallace B., John B., and especially Lionel B. ruined Grand Hotel for me. I was extremely bored having to sit through this. As far as Greta's best, i would pick Camille, Susan Lenox, and Mata Hari.

  16. Word dianabat. The director Vincent Sherman said Joan was envious of Bette. Envious of Bette's talent and Bette's stature as one of the premier acting talents in cinema. Poor Joan knew she wasn't always taken as serious as she would have liked. Probably as she was tagged as a glamour queen early on. I think Joan was also jealous of Bette's strength and no-nonsense approach to life. Joan tried to court Bette's friendship since 1935 in vain and was still trying in 1961 when she brought Bette the script of Baby Jane. Bette was never interested as she felt Joan was a hollywood phony of the highest caliber. To save face Joan would say nasty things about Bette, but Vincent Sherman said that JC was obsessed with all things BD.

It's sad they didn't get along, but i think they're both great. That said, i don't think anyone in film ever could touch Bette's talent, male or female. I think Susan Hayward is close though.

  17. Joan is stunning in this movie in every scene, especially in the balcony scene. I always thought that Joan was beautiful anyway. She was very concerned not to let the public down. So she always tried to look her best.
