  1. That is a really good reason to love Olivia, no doubt. I also saw Olivia in a movie long before i ever saw Joan in one. I was 12 or 13 and the movie was Airport '77. Lol. I remembered thinking this lady is really attractive for sixty years old and has an amazing voice. I'm really happy both gals are still alive and seem to be in good health for 91 and 90. May some of us be so lucky!!

  2. CM, you're not gonna believe this, but Paulette and Susan Hayward star in a movie from 1942 called The Forest Rangers where they clash over none other than one Fred MacMurray!! I've never seen it but would love to as Paulette and Susan are two of my favorites. Fred sure was a lucky guy on that picture.

Bargar, loved your picks of Susan with Bogie, Robert and Rita, Ty and Olivia, Merle and Cary, and Paulette and Clark. Those would've been great pairings imo.

  3. I think they are both great actresses and great beauties and offered a lot to the art of cinema. I really, really like them best when they play a nasty villainess as in My Cousin Rachel or Joan's Born To Be Bad, Ivy, or Serenade. In Rebecca, Joan was so weak, i wanted to slap her silly. Joan let her husband talk way down to her and let Mrs. Danvers walk all over her most of the time. I was screaming at Joan to get a backbone and tell them all off. Olivia and Joan were each great in a number of pictures, too many to list right now.

  4. I agree with everyone who said naming five is hard because Bette has sooooo many great movies to choose from. I've seen 36 of her films so far. These are my five favorites:

    5. All About Eve

    4. Deception - sorry, i love this dark/moody movie

    3. Old Acquaintance

    2. In This, Our Life

    1. Now, Voyager

  5. Just for an interesting discussion, let's say it's march 1939 and Vivien Leigh tells Victor Fleming off and is fired from GWTW. Who would you personally like to see step in and have a go as Scarlett opposite Gable as Rhett?? Paulette, Loretta Young, Joan Bennett... name any actress or a few who you could really enjoy watching tackle this coveted role.

  6. You are made of strong stuff to be out there for two and a half hours in this cold. I understand the driveway has to be clear. I live in an apartment complex. I don't even own a snow shovel as the maintenance people here do a pretty good job. This weather guy said last night that this was the worst snowstorm we've had in 98 years. Please be careful on 270 tomorrow morning. There's a 30% chance of snow for tomorrow morning. Did you see that they are running out of rock salt all over the state?? I knew al gore was full of it...

  7. Thank you. I will definitely look for it. It will be neat to see Cagney and Doris spit nails at each other. Did you know that Jane Russell was originally offered Doris' part in LMOLM?? She turned it down because she was "promised' the lead in I'll Cry Tomorrow. The winds changed and Jane didn't get that either. Could you imagine Jane Russell opposite Cagney?? I bet Jane would've thought she'd died and gone to heaven. At least Jane got to work with Gable that year in The Tall Men and she said Clark was a doll to work with. I love Jane, btw.

  8. Hi cinemajestic. I also am trying to weather the crappy snow/cold here in Columbus, Ohio. I live in the suburb of Hilliard. I didn't know there were any TCM posters from this frigid area. Were you born in Ohio? I hate winter and cold weather so CK when you say it's so warm in AZ it makes me long for summer heat. I do love Ohio. The state scenery is great. I just hate the freezing, windy, craptacular winters. Thank goodness for insulation and indoor heating. Winter sucks but life and TCM are great!!

  9. I wouldn't stray from Anne Archer either. When you have perfection at home, why go out for discount, second-rate attention. Anne/her character is beautiful with a great sounding voice and she wouldn't be two-timing me with other men. What more could you want??

CineMaven, men stray because they easily become bored and need to see themselves through the eyes of someone new, different, and usually younger. Most men have huge egos and need their ego stroked often. The male ego is very fragile. Men also love the excitement of the chase and are so arrogant they think they will never get caught. It is important to note that all men do not cheat. Some are mature and intelligent enough to know not to mess up on a good woman on the rare occasion you can find one in today's immediate gratification climate.

  10. Who was prettier? Linda Darnell in Forever Amber and in Second Chance and Dakota Incident and in Island Of Desire.

Now that's an island i wouldn't mind being stranded on. I wouldn't even worry about a signal fire for the first six months. With my luck, Robert Taylor, John Gavin, or Clark Gable would get shipwrecked with Linda & i the next day and ruin everything.

  11. This woman is gorgeous. She's been departed almost 35 years and today's starlets and singers are still trying to copy her timeless appeal.

On that old E! show Mysteries And Scandals, A.J. Benza said that Veronica's mother (who is a witch imo) took Veronica to court and sued VL for a portion of her earnings once the studio money came rolling in. VL's mother (the witch) told the judge that she "gave up everything" so VL could be a star. The judge agreed and her mother received a court-ordered portion of Vero's money. Also on this show, they said VL suffered from paranoid-schizophrenia. She thought everyone was out to get her which combined with too much alcohol would probably make her unpleasant. Frederic March, Alan Ladd, and George Reeves couldn't stand her. When Veronica died, her mother was informed and her ma said: So, what do you want me to do about it??

Great artists are difficult at times. Veronica's appeal will go on as it should.

  12. I would beg Linda Darnell not to go back in that burning house and tell her her friend's daughter already escaped through an upstairs window and was safe.

I would plead with Maria Montez to not take those scalding hot baths.

I would call Bob Wagner and Natalie Wood on their boat and tell them to come home immediately as their daughter is really ill.

I would make the Screen Actors Guild insist that Clark Gable allow a stuntman to be used on the set of The Misfits.

  13. Don't get me wrong. Bad girls are great as long as we keep them at arms length and don't get in too deep. Bad girls usually chew men up and spit them out. In the movies, bad girls are GREAT and loads of fun to watch. And you are right. We guys do like to stroll into a room with a beautiful girl on our arm. But there has to be more to a great gal than just looks or one can lose interest soon. And if i meet a Linda type in real life, i will get weak and wobbly from the vapors of her beauty, but i will stay awake!!

  14. Hi, CM. What i was meaning, that if it were real life, i would have chosen Linda's character. I could have put up with Donia Sol's crap for one date only. It would be kinda fun to go out with Donia for just one night of dancing to see what made her tick. I loathe mean and fickle in real life. I don't care how good lookin' she is. Anyhoo, when i saw Linda in that one scene, look up at that statue and pray for tyrone's safety... Linda was so beautiful i lost consciousness. Her eyes, that angelic face, and she would be true to me. No man could ever totally keep Donia from straying. And that is what randy calls a total turn-off.
