  1. Not bored at all. You can tell us how special the movie-going experience was back then as you lived it first-hand. I felt like i was there when i read your really cool trip down memory lane. The popcorn and ice cream cone mention made me hungry. And everybody knows that women like you get better with age.

  2. I'm glad that you finally saw it and enjoyed it so much. I knew you would. My favorite scene is when "something" happens to her brother and she runs over to him calling his name a few times. I thought Greer had a good dramatic moment there. Greer and Dana is an interesting team and likeable. On a side-note, wasn't June Allyson beautiful and cute as a button in The Opposite Sex?? June looked great in that red dress at the end with her new attitude.

  3. I can see your point now. That raised by wolves comment had me cracking the hell up. You are funny. Don't pay too much attention to me. I jumped on the i love Jennifer Jones/Greg Peck train last year and i'm too far gone. Neither one can do wrong in my book. I certainly see why people find fault with this movie. I just think it's a nice, refreshing, light, fun change from all that shouty, shrill, heavy, preachy bullsnot that is soooooooo popular with the snooty, high-brow academy elite that leaves me sneering. You totally have an interesting insight of the film that i never thought to explore before. You turned on the lights for me and got me thinking. Good job for you as it's only 25 degrees right now in Ohio and my brain might be frosting over.

  4. You're not going to hell as Ingrid has that effect on legions of people. Oops. The pics are great. Thanks Forever G. I don't think Peck or Jones have been the problem with any movie but i'm biased as they are both in my top 20 fave actors and actresses respectively. Greg's voice is really top-notch especially in David And Bathsheba and Snows Of Kilimanjaro. Virginia Mayo said he was the best kisser of her many co-stars on the Vicki talk show in 1993.

  5. How the hell did Lilli Palmer put up with Rex and his b.s.? I've always felt bad for Carole Landis. She was only 29 when Rex found her dead that July 4th weekend. And ha ha ha. Zanuck had to put super-great Linda in the film as Darryl felt Rex couldn't carry the picture with box office fans. Seems like Zanuck had to eat some crow with Linda. The previous year the powers that be had to crawl to Linda to step in and save Forever Amber as Peggy Cummins was just too inexperienced at that time. TPTB told Linda to buzz off earlier when she asked to be considered to play Amber. Ha ha ha ha. Don't mess with Linda. Karma is on her side. On a side-note, Zanuck made beautiful Lynn Bari's life not very fun at TC Fox.

Unfaithfully Yours is now considered a classic and Linda Is attached to that prestige so i'm happy with that. Wasn't Linda gggorgeous in Blood And Sand? Rita got her part after Carole Landis turned it down putting Carole on Zanuck's *hit list for good. Linda & Rita in the same movie: can't wait to see it again. If I were Tyrone i would've stayed with Linda cause Rita's Donia Sol was mean and fickle.

  6. I thought it was refreshing to see Peck and Jones play against type. I thought it was a hell of a ride and entertaining and JJ was off the charts sexy and hott. In real life, i've seen girls float between two men, their current guy and their ex, or their husband and their secret dude on the side. In 1987, i was the only one in my circle of friends who wasn't carrying on with a married girl. Morally, i just don't believe in making time with some guy's wife or girlfriend. There's plenty of unattached fish in the sea for me. Why bother intentionally hurting others?? I guess i learned a few things in 12 years of catholic school. But i certainly deserve no medal for doing the right thing. Peck and Jones are one of my favorite pairings as we never expected it. They are also great in their many pairings with most others.

  7. Joan hated Susan for some unknown reason. I read in Bette vs Joan: The Divine Feud by Shaun Considine this little nugget. It was late 52/early 53 and Joan said if she didn't win Le Oscar for Sudden Fear, she hoped Shirley Booth would win for Come Back Little Sheba. And Joan acknowledged Julie Harris for being nominated, but refused to even mention Susan and Bette were also in the running that year for best actress. Guess Joanie didn't like gals who weren't gonna roll over and put up with her b.s.

This book also covers in detail Joan's feuds with Mercedes McCambridge, Sterling Hayden, Gloria Grahame who said she actually woke up from nightmares that she had to work with JC again, Garbo, Shearer, Marilyn, Liz: had Taylor barred from the set of Torch Song as JC was put off that Liz kept coming by to visit her husband Mike Wilding; Greer Garson, Lana, and of course the feud that is still talked about, JC and Bette. Here's some trivia: Bette actually hated Miriam Hopkins and Faye Dunaway much more than Joan per this book and Bette's Feb. 1988 interview on Larry King. Bette also said that Christina should not have written Mommie Dearest to trash JC unfairly. Also, Bette swore to Larry King that she and JC got along during Baby Jane. Co-star Anna Lee later said you could feel the hate flowing between the two, although they tried to pretend as best they could. Bette and Joan were never dull, that's for sure. Aren't they just the greatest? Everyone in Hollywood was afraid of them except Louella, Hedda, and Jack Warner.

  8. Frank you have great taste as always. Linda's your #3 and my #2 but Arturo has us both beat as i believe Linda is his #1.

P.S. -- I'm starting to fall for Gloria Grahame again. Here's hoping TCM is going to trot out In A Lonely Place. I have Macao on tape. I can watch that and drool over Gloria and Jane Russell. God bless tcm.

  9. I agree. Her beauty is timeless because it comes from within and works its way to the surface. I really love her unique voice too. Jennifer is one of those few stars like Bette or Crawford who i will watch in a movie even if the movie is not the greatest, just to look at her and hear her talk. I love, love, love this woman. She's done a lot of charity work and i hope she lives to be at least 101 if not more. Thanks CineMaven for the wow pics!!! and, of course, Jennifer does rule!

  10. The actresses that inhabit classic films are five tons of beautiful and classy. I could easily name 110 women that were gorgeous in one or many classic films. Today's actresses: i could maybe name 8. The classic men were cool too. These people were stars every day, all day. Even when Errol Flynn got in that statutory rape mess, he handled it with dignity, was vindicated, and never lost his star quality. And it seems like just about every single star had a great, polished speaking voice for the movies back in the day. Would you rather look at and listen to Veronica Lake... or Lindsay Lohan? Lohan and her ilk aren't worthy of being in the same orbit as the classic gents and ladies imo.

  11. The African Queen: great movie, great script. Not a fan of either of the leads.

Edward, My Son: great movie. Spencer is not my cup of tea, Deborah Kerr is meh, too goody-goody for me. She was great in this movie; could watch this movie every other month and not get sick of it. I love movies with marital conflict and strife. Keeps my interest.

  12. Madame Bovary is my fave as well of the great and gorgeous Jennifer Jones. Jennifer was quite scandalous as Emma and i loved the plot. However, i LOVED Jennifer as well in Ruby Gentry, Duel In The Sun, Since You Went Away, and The Towering Inferno. I bought the dvd of Carrie and am looking forward to watching it for the first time. Jennifer Jones rules!!

  13. I understand that The Wiz was not a box office favorite. May i chime in and say i LOVED Diana Ross in Lady Sings The Blues and Mahogany. Diana was originally offered The Bodyguard in 1979 to co-star her then boyfriend Ryan O'Neal. But Diana was completely uncomfortable with doing the nude scenes that were on paper. And she tried like gangbusters to get a biopic of Josephine Baker off the ground around 1989 but i suspect the financing collapsed and/or the script was not good enough at that time. I would have loved to see her play Miss Baker as i think she did a moving portrayal of Billie Holiday. Oh well, at least i still get to hear her on the radio.

  15. I wasn't initially excited about viewing this movie as Rex is not my favorite. But, I'm nutso for Linda and I still can't get over how stunning she looks and sounds in UY. Linda is so gorgeous/great/charming i sometimes think she must be from some other galaxy.

  16. It is funny you mentioned The Mirror Cracked as i just bought the dvd two months ago. Haven't seen it yet, but any movie with Liz, Kim, and Angela Lansbury together... i just have to own. I have read that Elizabeth and Kim's characters in the movie hate each other and are always trading insults. Good times, good times for we viewers. I remember Elizabeth looked gorgeous in the previews of TMC. No surprise there.

  17. Just watched it again last week on Fox MC. Irwin Allen's films are always a good time. I couldn't get the theme song out of my head for the rest of the afternoon. I kept hearing Fabian singing along to it in the middle of the movie when they stop at the desert oasis. Darn catchy song.

  18. Lana, Mae, Veronica, Dolores Moran, Joan Fontaine, Diana Dors, Adele Jergens, Moira Lister, Virginia Mayo, Dietrich, Grable, Constance Bennett, Claire, Hillary Brooke, Marilyn Maxwell, Joan Blondell, Lizabeth, Ann Sothern, Ginger, Mamie, Novak, Ekberg, Miriam Hopkins, Barbara Payton, Evelyn Keyes, Belita, Monroe, ...

  19. Veronica is the bomb! The essence of glamour with her hair obscuring one eye. Her look and her voice were great for the movies. I wish she had made more films. I hope that someday TCM acquires the rights to show more of her films. Veronica is so great; she is one of my three favorite classic movie blondes along with Lana and Mae.
