  1. So much big hair to acknowledge - *Sophia Loren's turn*
  2. I was watching an old movie the other night, and one person asked the other if they wanted a drink, and the response was "I will try a heater". I had never heard that term for cigarettes before. "Heaters" were very popular, thanks to ads like these. Here's some old Lucky Strike ads. *Betty Compson, 1929* *Dolores Del Rio* *Miriam Hopkins* *Douglas Fairbanks, Jr*. *Constance Talmadge* *Amelia Earhardt* *Al Jolson*
  3. Looking forward to Tuesday, June 15 - love this theme - Aging Cowboys - *Will Penny, Monte Walsh, Ride the High Country, The Shootist and The Man from Laramie.* Especially *Monte Walsh*, which I haven't seen, and is on early enough for me to catch.
  4. Smokin' okum! mrsl - good to see your name here. I see new things every time I see *Westward the* *Women*. But someone please explain Quackenbush.
  5. > {quote:title=CineMaven wrote:}{quote} > Some good names out there. Would Connie Francis or Connie Stevens be considered kind of poufy? Maven, I'd say both Connies were kind of poufy, and seeing is believing. Good call. Francis[/i]francis.jpg] Francis[/i]connief6.png] Francis[/i]conniefrancis.jpg]
  6. SueSue - I had problems posting photos last night (grrrr) and my big-bigger-biggest Anne Baxters didn't work. Anyhow, here's - *Biggest*
  7. SueSue - you got me started - I can't stop! *Anne Baxter - Big* *Bigger* Edited by: cinemafan on Jun 10, 2010 8:45 PM I will have to work on the third photo.
  8. Yeah, finally a movie that I saw and can contribute a little to. I'll be on the lookout to see if you all take your favorite horse riders-and-shooters conversation elsewhere here.
  9. > {quote:title=rohanaka wrote:}{quote} > I did like this film WAY more than I was expecting to. I don't know why, but for whatever reason I have spent the better part of my life more or less ignoring it. When it came on tonight, I almost turned the channel. (I am such a DOPE, sometimes about my pre-conceived notions, ha) But the beginning shot w/ Johnny down on the ground like that (shooting dice) was a really good hook. I remember thinking, wow... he has NOWHERE to go but up, ha. (and I did not even know anything about him at that moment, other than that shot) Ro - I'm glad you liked *Gilda*. One of my favorites. I love the way this dress looks on her when she sings "Amado Mio". By the way, her songs were dubbed by Anita Ellis. When I was in high school, a classmate who knew I was a movie fan told me that her family had owned a restaurant/nightclub in Tijuana and that Rita used to dance there in her early days. The family was very proud of this. Rita is so graceful. I'm happy to hear there are more Glenn Ford fans out here.
  10. *for Bronxgirl* wOw - that's some big beautiful hair!! > {quote:title=Bronxgirl48 wrote:}{quote} > Brigette Bardot has my dream big hair, tousled, sexy, adorable, yet still somehow chic. > > 11 > > > > > > > I'm trying to think of a way to look like her in time for my hopeful first visit to the South of France next year. > > I also adore Natalie's lush locks: > > > > Edited by: Bronxgirl48 on Jun 8, 2010 11:57 PM
  11. Just curious - anyone still having the technical problems we were having in the last two weeks?
  12. *Maven, welcome back! Hope you had a wonderful trip. Summer's coming, and going with the travel theme, here's Gary Cooper looking a little sheepish, if you ask me.*

It just about drove me crazy. I was trying to follow who was who - after about 40 minutes, I had figured out that two guys were defending attorneys, two were defendants who were acquitted, and after - I won't tell you how many minutes because it is embarrassing (I should know what he looks like) - Leonard Peltier. I also figured out one was a juror and one was an FBI agent. > > > > At no time were any of the speakers identified. You were supposed to have to figure it out. Director Apted's docs are normally cinema veritee, which doesn't usually label the subjects. Perhaps he should have named the subjects at their second or third appearance, and that would have served better. > > I first saw this film in the theater, and liked it a lot. It does have a point of view, but I think it is never the less rather even-handed, letting all sides present their case. I think it is a great film. I recorded the TCM presentation, but haven't watched it again yet. I look forward to it. > > I, too, think that this series of Race and Hollywood has been exceptional. Valentine - I thoroughly agree with you and TikiSoo on this series. I enjoyed it immensely and just wish I could have seen all the films. Repeating myself, I hope some are shown again before long. I have never taken a film class in my life, and "cinema veritee" sent me to the dictionary! Thanks for the explanation - I did get to know who the people speaking were - eventually. Not their names, but their true characters did come through for me.
  14. FredC - you sure have a lot of great stories to tell from your cameraman days. Thanks for adding color to the goings on here.
  15. mongo - that story of William Powell's son is one I never knew before - how terribly sad. I learn so much here, even if it's not all pleasant. Thanks again for all your contributions here.
  16. filmlover - Thanks for this great addition to the Boards. Something I will look forward to. And thanks for starting out with one of my faves, Alan Ladd. Am I correct that the covers with photos came later than the covers with drawings? And the Judy Garland story - wow - that was a pretty concise story there. I would love to see the cover and more stories.
  17. *William Wellman and Robert Taylor* I had this posted in the Robert Taylor thread, but I thought it belongs here also.
  18. Thanks, lz. I knew there was a reason I haven't invested the time to see *Reds* ! Every time it's on, knowing that I will have to concentrate on a long story, I always put it off - on too late, on too early, too tired, etc. Now, I will have to at least start it. You've got me curious as to how it works - do people never say each others' names? Probably something a lot more complicated. I take my movie watching seriously - so I like to follow along closely. So, it wasn't just me in this case. Oh, I did remember one person who was identified, probably with a campaign sign - Dick Wilson.
  19. I am finally getting around to posting this inquiry. I watched *Incident at Oglala* and it was, as they say, compelling. However, not getting into whose side anyone is on - This was the first documentary that I've seen that did not identify the people on screen, either with a caption, or spoken word. Even on *Nanook*, the people on screen were identified. Did anyone who saw it have any explanation? Were we supposed to recognize them on sight?

This is now not only probably my all-time favorite Bogie performance, but also of Hepburn's. > They have such chemistry together, it's amazing. Wonderful movie.....
  21. FYI to all - I just noticed this in _Announcements_ on the main page. Although it gives no specifics, at least it's something. Funny, I didn't notice it until just now. http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/ann.jspa?annID=47
