Hey guys, allow me to comment on your thread. I had no idea that Colleen Moore had two different color eyes! It took me a while to figure this out. Thanks for posting those pictures.

Mongo, love your Candids. The photo of John Barrymore and Dolores Costello look like her photo was cut out and combined with a photo of him. I was under the impression that they were married in much younger days. She had beautiful eyes. John looked like he did some hard living. Thanks again for a bright spot here on the forums. Your captions have kept me chuckling lately.

Fred, I liked this one lots. I've seen a lot of serious depictions of Henry's life, mostly on PBS Masterpiece Theater, but this one did a lot in 97 min. His third wife, Jane - her hair was too short for accuracy. Too thirties. I also loved seeing Robert Donat.
-
Peter Strauss had the same effect on me when I saw him (and a very young Nick Nolte) in "Rich Man, Poor Man". See this if you have a chance - the characters are developed over several episodes. Peter has a wonderful voice, and I instantly recognized it from the Miracle Grow commercials.

Good Morning, mongo. I'm glad that Joan didn't get into Angela's eyebrows!

Mongo, that photo of Ingrid Bergman - she looks so sad, unhappy and worried. And she still has her wedding ring on. That photo pulls no punches.
There's a lot I skip on here nowadays, but I never miss your Candids. Love them. cinemafan

This thread brought tears to my eyes. My thoughts today will be of his life and his family. cinemafan

Thanks for the very insightful answers to laffite's questions.

mongo - I don't think I've ever laughed out loud at someone's grave, until I saw your photo of Curly's resting place. I'm still smiling. Also, until now, I'd never seen a photo of the young Simone Signoret. Lovely. Thanks for sharing.

The "voices" in the background were scary. What the heck were they repeating over and over? I haven't heard anything like that since they played "an actual audio with the sounds of hell" on Coast to Coast (radio) one night! The music during Cleopatra's meeting with Marc Antony was interminable. I could swear I heard bagpipes at one point, and jet engines at another.
By the way, did you notice that the women in this film were, how should I put it, not as thin as in the flapper era (20s)?

For some reason, during McCain's speech, I was reminded of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington".
-
Mongo - once again, thanks for creating this great thread.
CK - re: the photo of "John Sutton" below - I am not familiar with him, but if that is his photo, he is an identical twin of Tyrone Power.

re: Millions Like Us (1943) - Gordon Jackson, my favorite butler of all time from "Upstairs, Downstairs" is in this. I just saw him last week as one of the sailors on the Bounty (60s version). He had longish strawberry blond hair. This should be interesting, seeing him as a young man.

Kyle, I haven't seen the Ben one yet, but I just saw a nice, short one with Robert O. He spoke of people coming up to him on the street expressing their "love" for TCM, and he called himself a " TCM fan". Not as corny as I described it. I hope to see it again. (I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who double coupons).

Don't be embarrassed. There's lots of movies I haven't seen - but do try to see The Treasure of the Sierra Madre next time it's on. The character of "Gold Hat" is one you won't forget. (Ask Fred Dobbs, not our fellow poster - but Humphrey Bogart's character with that name from "Treasure"). It's not a western, and I think that the theme would be too much for your little girl. But, I bet you'd find lots to discuss here.

I am bring this back up now that summer's almost over. Maybe some of us were out of town when it first posted. To recap, anyone have any info on Henry Nakamura? Thanks.

In response to your original post, one of the reasons I have to watch this every time it's on is Ramon -
played by Alfonso Bedoya. He was "Gold Hat" in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. I recognized his voice before I figured out who he was. Apparently, he died (1957) before this movie came out (1958). I find him very interesting.
Also, in the credits, the woman is credited only as "Hannasey Woman" - I always assumed she was a brother's wife, since there were kids around. How about the brothers' names - Buck, Rafe, Dude,
****, Cracker? Loved the music.

Great photo of Jimmy Cagney! To me, it expresses the real "work" behind good acting. cinemafan

mongo - I am thoroughly enjoying your "Candids". Any idea who the female impersonator with Van Johnson is impersonating? Thanks

Fred, I was out of town so I didn't see your heads up. But, I did spend yesterday afternoon on the couch resting and nursing my mosquito bites (Florida will do that). Watching "Stranger on the Third Floor", I kept wondering what happened to John McGuire and Margaret Tallichet. There's no reference to them in my trusty Film Encyclopedia. John McGuire kind of reminded me of John Garfield, maybe the studio was looking for a "type"? And, Margaret Tallichet's face reminded me of all people, Katharine Hepburn - may be those cheekbones.

"This Gun for Hire".

You talked me into it - I will make room on a tape and record this tonight. (I can never stay awake for TCM Imports - have to wake up too early).

Margaret Hamilton just brought a kid into see Marshal Dillon on Gunsmoke. She had him by the ear. Lots of oldtimers on these shows.

What on earth is George O'Brien covered up with? That can't be a fig leaf, and it's way more distracting than what it's covering. Isn't George O'Brien in the Silent Sundays opening? I hope that opening stays around.
