  1. > I mean if Durbin is great than what term should be used for Judy Garland?

    Overrated.

(Sorry, I'm probably the one person who doesn't like Garland's singing. She could act, as shown in movies like *The Clock*, but I get the impression that every time she's singing, she looks as though she's trying too hard.)

  2. > while *A.I. Artificial Intelligence* is too cold and uninvolving. I just didn't care what happened to to the cyborg-child.

In that case, it would be paired well with *Member of the Wedding*. Then again, I did sort of care what happened to the Julie Harris character: I wanted Ethel Waters to smack her into the next state.

  3. > Now, there IS a difference between calling someone a "pompous a--"(like the self-censor?) and saying someone HAS a "pondorous a--".

I think the word you want for the latter is [steatopygous|http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/steatopygous]. :-)

  4. [TCMs page on the movie|http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/66823/Adventures-of-Robinson-Crusoe/] claims that it's airing at 8:00 PM on February 21 and 4:00 AM on Sunday April 29 (that latter is probably early Monday morning).

(BTW: Why do apostrophes in the link text cause the formatting to go haywire?)

  5. My DirecTV box guide said it was the Luis Bu?uel version, as did the printable monthly schedule.

It's also supposed to show up in February; Dan O'Herlihy was nominated for Best Actor if memory serves.

I figured I'd watch the February showing anyhow, since I had my morning routine for today planned around *Ruby Gentry*, which at least was good for a few laughs.

  6. > Now, one who comes to mind for me is Carol Channing in "Thoroughly Modern Millie." I love this movie, and Ms. Channing is, as always, a delight. But her role seems to be unimportant to the over-all plot and doesn't even begin to display her tremendous talent. Some critics have suggested that her nomination was a peace offering for her being passed over for "Hello, Dolly". Any thoughts on this?

Yes. *Thoroughly Modern Millie* was nominated at the 40th Academy Awards (films of 1967). *Hello Dolly* was nominated at the 42d Academy Awards (films of 1969). It's hard to believe that Channing was nominated for *Thoroughly Modern Millie* because she had been snubbed for *Hello Dolly* two years later.

  7. > Hi, this is the TCM classic movie news for January.

Remember to include the "Hi" in that intro. :-)

More seriously, those "TCM classic movie news" pieces are advertising/advertainment as well. I'm sure when TCM includes a report on a movie from Universal or Paramount that it's in exchange for the rights to show something from one of their libraries.

Ditto things like the mentions of the Audie Murphy westerns collection, or the Jean Arthur comedy collection.

  8. My uncle got to meet Jessica Lange and the rest of the crew when the production of *Tootsie* came "upstate" (well, Kingston isn't really upstate) to do those scenes.

Grandma had the best reaction: "Who's Jessica Lange?" :-)
