  1. Oh my, JackBurley, you are SO right! I found this website that has photos of them both: http://www.robertwalkertribute.com/gallery/rwjralbum Does anyone know of a page on the TCM website that instructs you on how to post photos in your messages?
  2. LOL! By golly I think you're right I love those crazy Magpies.
  3. This evening I saw Christopher Plummer and Eleanor Parker in a scene from The sound of Music. To me, Ms Parker looked SO much like the actress Virginia Madsen. They could easily pass for sisters. Oh well, maybe I need new glasses I think Virginia Madsen is a beautiful woman. Can you think of any other actors that have look alikes?
  4. The two Christmas movies that I always watch every year are: Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966) the original with Boris Karloff.. LOVE his voice! A Christmas Story (1983)
  5. Another movie that I liked was "Rudy" 1993. Talk about perseverance! I used to work with adolescents and when they started to complain a lot I told them to watch that movie. I highly recommend this film.
  6. Greetings from the beautiful Ozark Mtns of northern AR. I'd also like to join in and wish you all a very Happy Holiday! I'm new to TCM and I love it! I've watched so many great films already...my house is a mess, and I'm lacking sleep but I'm Happy! Sure glad I'm retired! Evelyn
  7. Thanks for mentioning Georgia Gibbs~"her Nibs, Miss Gibbs" ~ She was a favorite of mine also. I remember her singing "If I knew You Were Comin' I'd have Baked a Cake." I didn't know she recently died.
  8. "although I could never explain them, I have a couple of wildly girlish crushes on both James Cagney and Van Johnson (early in the careers)." Oh, Hollyholt, I also had a crush on Van...Big time! I loved his voice, his smile and of course his cute "boyish" looks. His movie, the Last Time I Saw Paris is on tonight! I'll be watching !
  9. Well, there's always eBay There a quite a few choices there for Gildersleeve on DVD's. Here's an example: http://cgi.ebay.com/The-Great-Gildersleeve-Classic-DVD-Movie_W0QQitemZ180037975657QQihZ008QQcategoryZ617QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem
  10. Thanks for the info on Bang The Drum Slowly (1973). I've heard of it but must admit I've never seen it. I searched on AMC but see that it's "not scheduled." It is available at Amazon on DVD. I happened to see another baseball DVD while at Amazon that sounded very interesting. It's not a "classic" (yet) but the reviews were so good it really peaked my interest. It's titled Pastime (1991) ...starring: John Achorn, Ernie Lee Banks and directed by Robin B. Armstrong. It's a story of "minor-league baseball and major league dreams." Has anyone seen this movie? I'd appreciate any feedback. It might be a good "sleeper."
  11. I believe it's a gospel song sung by a group named Selah. The song, Press On, is from their album of the same name. Hope this helps. Artist - Selah Album - Press On Lyrics - Press On When the valley is deep when the mountian is steep when the body is weary when we stumble and fall When the choices are hard when we're battered and scarred when we've spent our resource when we've given our all In Jesus name we press on In jesus name we press on dear lord, with the prize clear before our eyes we find the strength to press on
  12. LOL!! I haven't thought about Ma & Pa Kettle in ages! I'd love to see one of their movies again...has TCM ever featured one of their films?
  13. I love a good sports-themed movie, especially those that root for the underdogs. The two that are among my many favorites are: Pride of the Yankees - 1943 Jim Thorpe-All American - 1951
  14. Yes, the book is titled: Vivien Leigh: A Biography, and is due out in March 2007. You can pre order it on Amazon.com. The price is $19.77 Do a "book" search on Amazon, type in ~Vivien Leigh~ and you'll get the information.
  15. Like mrsl, my all time favorite western is from a TV mini-series titled Centennial. A number of years ago I was fortunate to received the whole series (12 tapes) for Xmas. This is truly an epic! It spans two centuries of settlers opening the west. Robert Conrad, and Richard Chamberlain are the main stars. I play it about once a year and love it just as much as the first time I saw it.
  16. I'm new to the boards and while searching around I found this topic. A lot of great couples mentioned here.....some others I've enjoyed are: Deborah Kerr & Burt Lancaster - From Here to Eternity Omar Sharif & Julie Christie - Dr. Zhivago Jennifer Jones & Joseph Cotton - Love Letters Cary Grant & Deborah Kerr - An Affair to Remember Ryan O'Neil & Ali McGraw - Love Story
  17. Well, if you are trying to please adults and children, you might want to try some of the old Frankenstein movies. For "scary" and funny, try Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)
  18. Ooops! I meant to say ...Chairman of the Board, not Ol' Blue Eyes... "William B. Williams respected songwriters, music and singers, which showed. He had a permanent, perhaps profound, effect on the lexicon of pop music. He be?stowed the "Count" on Basie and the "Duke" on Ellington. Billie Holiday was "Lady Day." Ella Fitzgerald was the "First Lady of Song." Louis Armstrong was "Pops." Sinatra was "Francis Albert," the "Chairman of the Board," and Nat "King" Cole was simply "Nathaniel."
  19. Thanks for the info! I moved out of the NYC area just before William B took over the Make Believe Ballroom. I found a very interesting article about William B. and it does credit him with naming Frank Sinatra Ol' Blue Eyes. I think you might enjoy it: http://www.mattoid.com/data/History_new_and_old/jockprofessionalism.htm
  20. I'm so glad to see another fan of the movie "Yanks." I thought this was a marvelous movie. It touched my heart and it has stayed with me long after I first saw it. I think it's Richard Gere's best acting.
  21. I also grew up listening to The Make Believe Ballroom, on the NYC radio station WNEW. I believe the disc jockey, in the NYC area, for that show was Martin Block. http://www.bigbandlibrary.com/martinblock.html I can still hear the opening song announcing the show...played by Glen Miller It?s Make-Believe Ballroom Time Put all your cares away All the bands are here to bring a cheer your way It?s Make-Believe Ballroom Time And free to everyone It?s no time to fret Your dial is set for fun
  22. To me, Robert Stack was the same in every movie. He had a certain stare and monotone voice that seemed to never change no matter what the scene was about. I liken him to the present day actor, David Caruso, who plays Horatio Caine in CSI Miami....a monotone voice and he seems to ALWAYS face the camera from a side view
  23. I really can't narrow it down to one movie. Here's a list of just a few of the many movies I consider my "favorites." Citizen Kane (1941) Mrs. Miniver (1942) Rear Window (1954) On Golden Pond (1981) A Christmas Story (1983) Out of Africa (1985) Dances With Wolves (1990)
  24. I'd LOVE to be Susan Hayward in "Back Street." What red-blooded female wouldn't want to look like Susan Hayward and have a few stolen hours of love with John Gavin!..sigh...
  25. I fell in love with Stewart Granger (1913-1993) when I first saw him in "King Solomon's Mines" (1950). http://www.dvdonlineuk.com/individ-B00005A3OL-Stewart+Granger He was SO handsome and I loved his British accent. I also thought it was an excellent movie. If you ever see it on the schedule, I highly recommend it!
