Although I have had a couple of problems logging in, all I can say is that Digital Cable really makes my internet problems nonexistent. Really Spencer, I suggest that you check into this. Otherwise, that annoying dial up sound will forever haunt your internet surfing!

I'm so happy to see another young person on this site that appreciates classic film as much as I do! I'm also quite impressed that you have been to Christies auction house, and checked out some of the memorabilia. Unfortunately, I moved to Seattle for college a couple of years ago from my home in California. So I can't take advantage of any of the higher profile auctions down there. But hey, there's always ebay, and of course, TCM.
I was watching Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra in TCM's showing of "High Society" today, and I couldn't help but want to jump into the picture screen and listen to Louis Armstrong play the trumpet!

My love for Classic cinema has made its way into my home decor. I'm only twenty, but I would like to start collecting posters, furniture and other memorabilia. While I know the original stuff is a bit pricey; I've already collected some beautiful lobby cards, I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions where I could buy originals or really good knockoffs. Art.com, and posters.com, as well as ebay, have awarded me some nice finds, but everytime I watch TCM I'm inspired to go find more! Does anyone share this same passion? If you have any advice please post!

I completely agree...Tom Cruise is definitely too hyped up in my opinion. Personally, he isn't sexy to me either; especially in the capri pants and peasant blouse he wore in the Mission Impossible movies! As for stars that I love to hate, I would say Frank Sinatra, most often than not, played the manipulative, filandering playboy that you just wanted to slap in the face! But somehow, with a little song he could win you back.

Hey Spencer, yes Hearst Castle was absolutely amazing!!! Fortunately for me, I lived only two hours from San Simeon in Central Valley California, before I recently moved to the Seattle area. At this time I believe that the mansion is owned by the city of San Simeon, and I know that they conduct many tours during the week. In addition, the tours are uniquely different: The one I went on was just a basic look at the interior and exterior. But at your request you can take a less general tour, and look at his lavish zoo grounds and I think some of the guest bedrooms.
All in all the whole experience was breathtaking. I think I read in one of the pamphlets that the cost of construction was something like 24 million dollars. Just imagine how much it would cost today?! Anyway, I hope you find time to visit this wonderful California landmark. I also will e-mail you some pictures of the outside that I took. And finally, I think you can even order your tickets via the internet. Good Luck!

Hey, noone ever said Meryl Streep was washed up. It seems that I'm taking some heat over my earlier comments. I only meant to say that while her looks are intriguing and her acting ability is far reaching, her talents don't find much play as the leading ladies that Hollywood manufactures today(Nicole Kidman excluded). Unfortunately, the majority of films now are full of fast cars, scantily clad eighteen year-olds, and teenagers sticking their appendages into apple pies! Ofcourse Streep has "made it!" My point is that her talents are rare and under utilized in today's industry that carries the sentiment of quantity vs quality.

When TCM showed the film "Citizen Kane," a couple of weeks ago, it seemed to jog my memory of the delightful trip I took to Hearst Castle, five years ago. With the story based on the lavish life of news tycoon, William Randolph Hearst, I couldn't help but remember the tour guide telling countless stories of how Hearst would entertain Hollywood's elite stars. Betty Davis, Eryll Flyn and countless others visited the San Simeon mansion. It was an extremely memorable trip, I can almost envision Hollywood actors and actresses taking a dip in "Apollo's Pool." Anyone else ever visited Hearst Castle?

"Long Hot Summer" was absolutely fantastic! Woodward, Tony Franciosa, Orson Welles and Angela Lansbury, were a fabulous supporting cast. But Paul always steals the show!

I also believe Streep to be talented, but when was the last time she was cast as the sexy siren? I can recall films where she has been the object of affection, but not in the past ten years. At her age now, women like Joan Crawford and Betty Davis were still breaking mens hearts. Sad to say, even Meryl Streep doesn't fit Hollywood's new standards.

About a year ago I witnessed an outstanding performance by Tyrone Power, but I just can't remember the name of the film. In addition the main actress I think is Gene Tierney, but I'm not sure. Power's character, in love with Tierney, is turned down and he goes on hiatus for spiritual fulfillment. Upon his return he is wizened, and finds that Tierney has married but is unhappy. She is also angered that she no longer possesses Power's affection, and goes to great lengths, sometimes quite callous, in order to win him back.
---Can anyone help me here?---

Many times have I thought about this topic while watching classic film. I believe that many of the high profile stars of yesteryear wouldn't even get passed the first cut in today's Hollywood. Not because of talent, but most unfortunately because most would not fit the physical status quo. It saddens me that actressess such as Judy Garland and Betty Grable wouldn't be able to make it, because they would not fit the mold. Dancing, singing and fabulous acting have been replaced with the "model turned actress" phenomenon that rules present day Hollywood.

Hey, anyone out there that wishes TCM would run more movies featuring the lovely and talented Mr. Newman?! Not just an actor of physical beauty, Newman owned the screen. He was able to entertain on a wide scale of acting ability throughout his whole career, exemplified in films such as "Cool Hand Luke," "Hud," and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." In my opinion, Paul Newman has it all, and was overlooked on many occassions for an Oscar. In my heart, however, he will always be the best! Anyone else agree?

Does anyone have a weakness for musicals or B-Movie Horror films? I'm not judging here--just curious.
--I would have to say, that Troy Donahue films such as "Palm Springs Weekend," or the corny "Bernadine" movie starring Pat Boone are a few of my guilty pleasures!

I would like to see more Marx Brother films along with more Judy Garland films!

Wow! I am amazed and delighted by such quick responses to my post! I have already seen "El Cid," and "For Whom the Bell Tolls;" excellent choices I agree. While films set in Italy may be lavish, that is exactly the reason I love them so much. Breathtaking villas and sunsets on the Mediterranean are the settings of some of my favorite films. Captivating cinematography in movies such as "How to Catch a Thief," or "One Night in Rio" give me such great joy during the long rainy seasons here in Washington.
--So thanks again. While I watch TCM quite often, I'm extremely humbled by your knowledge of the classics. One more thing though...I remember seeing an old film last year starring Clark Gable and Joan Crawford: The two actors meet on a cruise ship and fall for eachother. Crawford's character is engaged to an old socialite and Gable's character owns a ranch in Africa. Of course the drama here is that Joan needs to find a way to break her engagement in order to marry Gable. Both the backdrop and acting are wonderful. Do you think you know what the title is?

At only twenty, I have fallen in love with old cinema. I much prefer Pual Newman, Clark Gable or Tyrone Power to some of the actors today. But more specifically I enjoy old films that are set in either Italy, South America or Spain. I recently purchased "Three Coins in a Fountain," and "Roman Holiday," but was wondering if anyone could offer more titles so that I can buy more. I faintly remember one starring Don Ameche, but can't remember the title. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I would be reincarnated as Joanne Woodward or Grace Kelly. Kelly because of her fragile beauty and Woodward because she starred with Pual Newman on and off the screen!

So all you TCM fans out there, I thought it would be interesting to see which version you guys thought was better. In my opinion I liked both, but would opt for the original...I mean, Sinatra's great, and Grace Kelly is wonderful, but I'd take Cary Grant over Bing Crosby for the role of Dexter any day!
What do you think? Was Hepburn better than Kelly? Stewart better than Sinatra?
