IMO, that's Raymond Massey at some point past his youth. Can't name the title; most likely
have not seen it.

I want to do something different with this question only. I am going to post a number of clues at
the outset, and will add others later. Two things: 1) The clues are all plot features, and 2) there are a number of correct answers -- movie titles. In fact, it will become clear that some of the films
are remakes of others one can name. I am aware of many titles that apply, and others may be able to add more that I don't know about. Hope this holds interest; hope it works.
Clue # 1. Two violent gangs vie for control of a territory.
Clue # 2. Police either weak, bought out or absent all together.
Clue # 3. Hero caught between the two, must outsmart both sides to survive.
Clue # 4. One side substantially defeated; a slaughter.
Clue # 5. Hero caught by one side and brutally beaten; must escape and recover.
That's for starters.

Glad to be of help. My second choice was Kitty Foyle.

Google Stella Dallas, an old Barbara Stanwick flick. See if that is the one you're seeking.

The English title,Blind Date (1958). seems to refer to the fact that the Dutch student did not know whom he was on his way to meet when he walked in on the crime scene. The American title, Chance Meeting (1959), seems to refer to the manner in which he discovered that the woman he knew was still alive. Hardy Kruger had top billing as the Dutchman. Stanley Baker had the role of the detective. I had forgotten until reminded by imdb, but the wife/ mistress/ murderer was played by the French actress Micheline Presle. German, Welsh and French, they had the leads in this English film
With some 79 views since I started giving clues on this film, and only one response, either this thread has run its course or else I'm not working out. If it is to continue, someone else must do it.

Clue # 9. At an outdoor location and in police custody, the Dutchman sees his girlfriend in a passing car in the company of a distinguished-looking man. Denoument: The VIP's wife had
posed as the mistress, and had started an affair with the Dutch student. She had then killed the mistress, leaving clues that pointed to the student -- all this to reclaim her husband. In their last confrontation before she is taken away, she laments, "...but I didn't expect to fall in love with you.
Damn you! Damn you!"
And still no one knows this show?

2 GUESSES:
1. Indiana Jones, Allan Quartermain and Laura Croft Get A Wave From Buddah
2. The Steel Helmet
...any luck?
-
Clue # 8. The detective is informed by higher-ups that the deceased is actually (also?) the mistress of a BIG VIP whose name can not be dragged into the investigation. Don't we all know how much movie cops love getting instructions like that?
-
Clue # 7. The actor playing the detective, now deceased, received a Knighthood before he died. The Dutch art student was played by a German actor.

Hammer? I researched and found no mention of the Hammer Corp. It certainly is not horror, but
police procedural.
Clue # 6. The mis-identification: The Dutch student sees the body from across the room and the police do not let him go closer. The face is covered, but one leg is partially uncovered.
He recognizes an ankle braclet as a gift from him, and identifies the corpse as his girlfriend. His
error comes to light only near the end of the story.

Every Which Way But Loose

Clue # 5. The prime suspect in the homicide is a young Dutch art student who walks into the room while the police are still establishing the crime scene. He acknowledges that he is the woman's lover, but he denies having killed her.
