New York City setting. In the opening sequence, before getting onto the serial case, the detectives
successfully pull off a sting, roping in a crowd of bail jumpers and process dodgers. They send out targeted invitations to a "Meet the Yankees" breakfast, serve them some coffee and waffles, check I.D.s, and haul them off to arraignment by the busload. (No ballplayers ever show up.}

Also incorrect. That's the Rod Steiger opus I mentioned. At one point during the investigation, the detectives question and dismiss the person who turns out, in the end, to be the killer.

Zama, Dr. Shiro -- Robert Ito in *The 'X' Files* (1993)

Not *Lonely Hearts Bandits*. Further investigation shows that the contacts they found had involved entries that were expressed in poetry. Not the Rod Steiger opus either.
-
Not *While The City Sleeps*. A task force is formed. Pooling info, they conclude that the perp is finding his victims in a 'lonely hearts' magazine Personals column.
-
Not *Copycat*. The police are slow picking up on the fact, until two detectives from different precincts meet and discover some similarities in their respective crime scenes.
