Correct, Eve. I haven't read the source novel either, But I saw the movie on TV some time in the 80's , and one of the Showtime channels ran it a couple of times recently. Anthony Perkins (Gid), Beau Bridges (Johnny & end narrator) and Blythe Danner as Molly gave sterling performances. If you can track it down, it's worth a viewer's time. Eve's thread.
