  1. Turner Classic Movies has a deal to air Columbia Pictures and Paramount Pictures films. I think this is great because little seen films will finally be shown the light of day rather than the same Metro Goldywn Mayer and Warner Bros. films over and over again. There are still a lot of films in the Time Warner film library that still need to be shown, but at least we are given a chance to see other studios films. Time Warner seems to know that there are people out there who crave classic films. Hopefully their good work will continue.
  2. I am curious to see how Greed, The Magnificent Ambersons, and The Lady From Shanghai would have turned out in their original forms. Lost Horizon was good at its length now. I can't imagine it longer.
  3. I have given dvds to mostly friends. A couple of them are film fanatics who buy or tape everything. My collection really took off in the last couple of years, but has somewhat leveled off recently. I am more discriminate now in what I want to own and have a focused approach to film collecting.
  4. Ace in the Hole is coming to dvd this year from Criterion.
  5. I have 156 films on dvd. It isn't many compared to some. There are a few I haven't seen in a while. I do go though my collection and get rid of some every now and then.
  6. > It's a shame black-and-white ever stopped being > considered the "regular" way to film a movie. Color is good. I do love the look of black and white, but for most films it probably wouldn't add to the film. For some films it would give them a better look and feel, but not all. Even if color is used in a certain way it can add even more to the film.
  7. My post has been edited. I am a little bit curious as to where the library is held on the company organization chart. I suppose it is with all of the current Warner Bros. films. It is tricky as far as who owns what film. I realize that Warner Bros. does not own all of their films. Some of these are Rope (Universal), My Fair Lady (CBS - I think), and The High and the Mighty (Batjac). Maybe something to consider for future challenges is to limit the films from studios that TCM has agreements with because these could only be the ones that they will be able to show. That will probably elminiate most of the movies from Fox.
  8. I know that it is too late now, but the MGM portion of the library only consists of films before 1986. Perhaps it could be change for the next programming challenge. Also, the TCM library includes most of the Allied Artists/Monogram films among portions of other film distributor libraries like Lorimar, Orion, and Castle Hill Productions. 9. > And let's hear it for TCM for showing us this movie!! > Now if they could only show The Major and the > Minor... I think The Major and the Minor was shown last year on TCM. Hopefully they will show it again. I remember seeing it on televison commerical free and it was great!

  11. > It was released in America as "Salute To the > Theatres" and Internationally as "MGM Celebration > 1955". They are exactly the same short except that > they use two different clips from "Interrupted > Melody". The US version has Eleanor Parker doing > "Over The Rainbow" and the International version has > her depicted in a scene from "Carmen". Thank you for that information.
  12. There is a possibliy another reissue or perhaps a different version of the same short for the British market. I am not sure, but I do have a couple of questions below. The Interrupted Melody portion of the 1955 Motion Picture Celebration is partly different in each one. From 1955 Motion Picture Theatre Celebration airing Janaury 20, 2007 at 2:41am. This is the correct part. She is singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow. From airing 1955 Motion Picture Theatre Celebration airing today. This is not apart of Interrupted Melody, but it is identified by the narrator as such. I am not sure of the song title. Does anyone know what movie the picture above is from? Was it a goof on MGM's part to include it? Thank you.
  13. > Wouldn't be nice if everything was turned over to WB? > >> > > It would be loverly, indeed. It would be great. I am sure it can be its own separate company based on the fact that they will have to hire thousands more just to restore and find missing materials.
  14. > Yeah that's the remake that they included in the new > special edition of the original. Always heard it was > bloody awful! It was. I should have purchased the region 4 dvd of the orginial Double Indemnity.
  15. > "The original Sunset Blvd open: I saw clips from > it in the German documentary on Wilder that TCM ran > in June., so I hope that means it still exists > somewhere!" > > You give me hope! Now if you'd just get on that > Theda Bara issue... I believe it is already on the Sunset Boulevard Special Collector's Edition dvd. This dvd has been out for awhile.
  16. Hopefully the Romance the Celluloid series of shorts will return as well as other ones about the motion picture industry.
  17. I am sure this has been asked before. Do you know where I can find the widescreen explanation documentary on this website or when it will be broadcast? It is the one where they use Ben-Hur as an example for widescreen and what would have been cut off if it was panned ans scanned. Thank you.
  18. An appreciation of film history developed in me because of the film class I took in college and it has led me to have many wonderful experiences. Up until that point I really didn't care that much for film. After that point I started watching more and more classic films. The first channel that watched was American Movie Classics, but it was only on for part of the day on the cable system I had. Eventually, I switched to Turner Classic Movies after it became available. I am thankful that Mr. Turner had the vision to create this channel so that films can be shown the way they are meant to be seen, uncut and commerical free.
  19. If you have a multiregion player, MGM put this out in Germany. It is good. http://www.amazon.de/Die-Spur-Fremden-Edward-Robinson/dp/B00018GW7Q/ref=sr_1_1/028-4523000-0967753?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1172815679&sr=8-1
  20. I think Fox Movie Channel shows it alot.
  21. Those two movies were great. Here Comes Mr. Jordan came out on dvd recently. I have seen the 1954 A Star is Born with Judy Garland not to long ago on HDNet Movies. This movie channel airs commerical free movies for those of you who do not know. I haven't seen the 1976 version of A Star is Born.

I watched A Star is Born and > Here Comes Mr Jordan, two "classic" films, > and I was kept more than entertained for the better > part of four hours! It was the first time I had seen A Star is Born and Here Comes Mr. Jordan.
  23. I love The Departed. Hopefully Marty will get an Oscar for this one.
  24. Crash and Titanic should be on the list. Crash, which won recently, is the worst one.
