  1. One wonders why some company could not get a hold of that transfer and reproduce it as is. I think the Belle de Jour DVD (that is NOT Criterion) was taken from the Criterion Laserdisc print?

  3. Yes, I have seen that some titles have been released ("Murder" is a nice picture), but unfortunately the 3 I mentioned have not been. Sabotage itself is an incredible film that was more hard edged than most movies of that time. I also believe Orson Welles saw the aquarium scene and borrowed it for "Lady From Shanghai".
  4. There is an interesting interview with the original writer in "The Big Book of Noir" (I forgot his name) He's done many other great films as well. He complained about them screwing up the endings to several of his scripts including "Thieves" and "On Dangerous Ground". Dewey probably knows who I am talking about and can elaborate.
  5. I prefer subtitles generally, but if a film has a good dub by the original actors I don't mind it. I always check out the dub if there is one because if it's good, that's a way to share a foriegn film with people who would normally never watch one because of subtitles. Once you get them hooked, they will usually take the next step and watch a subtitled film.
  6. Although I have never liked this film, that was a very well written piece. You've actually got me interested in maybe watching when it comes on (or at least pulling out my "Tea for the Tillerman" album!). I look forward to reading more of your stuff.
  7. Great film. Great performances. Strohiem was a genius, but as was pointed out his willingness to go to whatever lengths to get what he was looking for generally drove actors, crew, and studio execs alike--CRAZY. Still, his films have stood the test of time and are unlike anything else in the cinema. That it was so heavily edited is a tragedy. One wonders what the original 9 hrs. would look like, but there have been so many similar cases (Magnificent Ambersons, etc) where some executive decided what "We" the public would enjoy (Heck, they're still deciding for us today!).
  8. Seen it? It's on the shelf calling to me right now! Just kidding. Yes, I have it. I'm a fan of Dassin.
  9. Thieves Highway is a great one.
  10. Yes, I always was more interested in the Justice Society. The Green Lantern was one of the few guys that existed in both demensions. There was a guy on my hockey team who was a big comics fan who bought a nice one piece stick that was green. He nicknamed it "Hal" (for Hal Jordan/Green Lantern) and scored a lot of goals with that thing.
  11. Shazam would be cool if they have Mr. Mind: http://www.marvelfamily.com/WhosWho/whoswho.asp?castid=154 For some reason Shazam's artwork always looked more similar to eariler DC comics.
  12. The Avengers were cool. I have some of those old ones. Sounds like you were mostly a Marvel man. Ever get into the old DC stuff? I used to love The Spectre, Dr. Fate, Capt. Midnight, etc.
  13. Anyone watching? I am recording this one. Another TCM exclusive.
  14. Wow. I'm looking all this stuff up and it's bringing back quite a flood of memories. Any good classic comic sights Gagman?
  15. Now I'm just wondering who The Shocker killed...
  16. You're right about RR knowing him and Doom doing crazy experments in college (which he got kicked out for), but they never went on that space trip together. You sure Gwen wasn't killed by The Shocker? I have been wrong before, but I thought I remembered that one. Tough to keep all the supervillans straight. I stopped reading comics in the early 70's and I don't think PP and MJ were hitched at that time. Yeah, BC was my dream girl in the comics. She and GA had a really cool kinda "Thin Man" superhero relationship--except I don't remember them belting back a few while fighting crime!
  17. Yes. I have a British friend who told me about people who used to hook stuff up and watch on their computer monitors. Technically, it's not a television, but the BBC soon cracked down on that. He had one friend that did not have a TV. He just bought DVD's and watched them on his computer and was getting threatening calls & letters because they couldn't believe he didn't have a TV in his house. BTW, if you have seen what Turner shows on UK TCM it's pretty pitiful compared with what we enjoy. Last time my friend was over here he was amazed at what we were able to see in the US. He said they call the TCM they see over there: "Turner Crappy Movies".
  18. > This affects analog over the air reception only. > Anyone using a cable set top box (or cable satellite) > doesn't have to change anything. And the broadcast > networks will still be broadcasting channels for free > over the air. It will just be a digital signal. > Hopefully, the voucher program will be promoted > enough in order to explain to viewers that they can > keep their old TVs, but that they have to get the > converter. Great. No problems then.
  19. My studio is 2" analog. Guess who got Miramaxes 24 channels of Dolby SR when they folded? It's the only piece of movie memorabilia I own!
  20. I'm not going to nitpick about the uniforms. But Dr. Doom NEVER went into space with the Fantastic Four. He was never friends with any of them. Peter Parker did not have that serious of a relationship with Mary Jane and she did not appear till much later. His serious girlfriend was Gwen who got killed by "The Shocker" which would have been more interesting anyway. I wouldn't mind seeing a film about Green Arrow and Black Canary's relationship either if it was well done.
  21. Well, we shall see. I'm sure I can figure some way to make my stuff work. It's getting harder and harder to find any analog stuff as is. Digital is nice for some things, but when you're talking about sound--gimmie my old records and a tube hifi anyday!
  22. My favorite Ava role is "Night of the Iguana" (1964), but this is the Noir/Gangster section...
  23. That stinks. I have been holding off buying a new TV for the living room just because of this, but I was hoping we'd get out of it somehow. If I have a digital cablebox can I still use it with an analog set? That's what I'm using now and it's fine (just using the coaxial out). Would any of these changes affect that?
