  1. That is an odd outfit Renee has on. She looks like Tweedle Dum (or Tweedle Dee ;) ). I?ve always thought it was strange that during the 20s girls with more boyish figures were popular and a lot of the clothes were designed to hide a woman?s curves. Maybe it was b/c of the new independence women were feeling with the right to vote, getting short haircuts, more girls attending college and joining the workforce. I do like a lot of the styles from the 20s but in the 30s the focus switched to more feminine designs that hugged the body and showed off the curves instead of downplaying them. I think some of the most beautiful clothes came from the 30s, especially all the beautiful evening gowns like you see in the movies.

  2. *Coop was looking mighty appealing to me yesterday after watching the Eagles humiliate the Cowboys with the playoffs on the line. I'm ready to be hanged.*

You?ll have to forgive me for being a little giddy at the Cowboys humiliating defeat. Here in Texas, you?re pretty much either a Houston teams fan or a Dallas teams fan and never the twain shall meet. Even though the Oilers are long gone, they?re still my team. I just haven?t been able to warm up to the Texans and since I?m really a baseball girl anyway, I guess I?ll have to let football go.

I?m sure this will make you feel better. Thinking about Gary in a baseball uniform always cheers me up :x.

Or you could enter a beauty pageant. I hear the winner gets a kiss and that should definitely perk you right up :P.

How much you wanna bet she hit the floor of that stage as soon as their lips parted ;).

  3. I could talk baseball stats all day too. I work with numbers for a living so baseball is the perfect sport for me :). Don't worry, sometimes we do tend to get off topic but it's okay. Here's a pic of Gary from *NWMP* though just so we don't forget what he looks like ;).

  4. The double play stat just amazed me too. He only had those two in the regular season and one in the 1932 World Series. His post season slugging percentage was .731 over 34 games and he's one of the best postseason players of all time too. He seems to have been the very definition of clutch. That's also quite impressive about Dimaggio's homer to strikeout ratio.

Another surprising Gehrig stat is that he holds the team record for most triples hit in a career as a Yankee with 163. For a big man he was pretty speedy and a smart base runner.

  5. When Mark Teixeira, who is also a first baseman like Lou, signed that outrageous deal with the Yanks a couple days ago for 8 years at $180 million I decided to see how he compared to Lou. I took the numbers from Mark's 6 year career and averaged them and compared that to just one year of Lou's numbers. For Lou, I picked 1938 b/c that's the first season he was showing symptoms of ALS and his numbers dropped a lot. I have bolded Lou's numbers when they are better than Mark's.

    *Texeira*

    HR - 34

    Walks - 74

    RBI - 113

    Hits - 165

    Extra base hits - 73

    Strikouts - 116

Ground into double play in regular season - 79 (this number is over his entire 6 year career)

    *Gehrig*

    HR - 29

    Walks - *107*

    RBI - *114*

    Hits - *170*

    Extra base hits - 67

    Strikeouts - *75*

Ground into double play in regular season - 2 (over Lou's entire career which spanned over parts of 16 seasons)

Gehrig got booed during the '38 season b/c while his numbers were good, they are not as good as he usually did. So it's funny that Teixeira just got rewarded with a king's ransom for numbers that aren't quite as good or similar; it's a crazy world :).

  6. I'm a die hard Astros fan but Gehrig is my fave all time. He was not only extraordinarily talented but a true gentleman (and good looking to boot!). If I could go back in time I would go back to 1927 and I would watch all my fave silent films that came out that year, do some serious shopping, and watch everyone of the Yankees games during that marvelous season.

I think the stat that impresses me the most about Gehrig (other than the 2,130 consecutive games of course) is the fact that he only hit into 3 double plays in his entire career; one was during a world series game and the others were in '39 when he was suffering from ALS. There is no bigger rally killer than the double play and for a big man, Lou could run fast enough to beat out a lot of balls to land safe at 1st.

  7. You should have seen how many kleenexes I went through making that one - ha! I looooove Lou Gehrig (and Gary ;) ) and I'm a huge baseball fan and as much as I love that movie I can't watch it too often b/c it makes me cry my eyes out everytime.

That stinks to have the flu at Christmas, I hope you feel better soon :).

  8. Thanks! I don't have any actual film footage of Gehrig so I thought it would be neat to use the movie clips and then also put in some pics. I love that song too and the guy who wrote it really captured Gehrig perfectly. I loved the line about how he was 'the man who drove the car while others slept' b/c he was always there day after day playing sick and injured b/c he loved the game and the team so much. He was never one of those players who think the fans should be honored to see him play, he saw it as an honor to get to play. It's a shame more players don't see it that way.

  9. *I'll tell your mom to jam Coop in the closet with you.*

Good, I could use some cheering up. I knew it was gonna be a slow day at work so I brought in Jonathon Eig?s book *Luckiest Man* about Lou Gehrig and I just finished it a few minutes ago. What a remarkable man :). He?s my fave player (even more than Sugarbritches ;) ). My assistant band director in high school died of ALS. He was a real nice guy and I?ll never forget when he told us that he was having to quit b/c of it. Once you start to show symptoms, most people die within a few years and I think he only lived another year or so. It?s amazing how long Stephen Hawking has lived with it.

It?s funny too b/c while reading it anytime they had a quote from Lou or printed part of a letter he had written, I heard Gary?s voice in my head even though I know what Lou?s voice sounded like. It?s hard for me to separate the two since Gary did such a fantastic job in that film. I think that one and *High Noon* were the very best of his performances.

It only took me about four days to get through it and a couple of days ago I read one part where in the 20s Lou had bought his first car; a used Packard. That night I had a dream that Lou and I were a couple and we were out shopping for used cars. He looked so cute too in a suit and little bow tie :x.

    19343.jpg

I?ve had one other dream about him before and I get all choked up thinking about it. My parents and I were at a ball game (it was a pretty generic looking park and I don?t know who the teams were) and we were sitting pretty high up in left center field. It was in between batters and we were talking as we waited for the next guy to come up. All the sudden people started cheering and it spread through the park as everyone realized Lou Gehrig, wearing his Yankee uniform, was walking up to the plate. Everybody stood up and kept on cheering and he took his cap off and just barely waved it a little to recognize the crowd then he stepped in the batter?s box. On the first pitch he hit a homerun to right center and we watched as it went into the crowd. Fireworks went off (even though it was a day game) and that place was just going crazy. That?s one of the best dreams I?ve ever had, and I?ve had some doozies ;).

Also a lot of people like to point out that in the movie, Gary signs things with his right hand even though Lou was a lefty. From the book I learned that Lou did write with his right hand b/c in those days teachers made everyone learn to write right-handed. I imagine it was just a mistake in the movie, but still, I think it?s funny that what looks like a continuity error is really correct.

  10. *Coop CANNOT be on page two.*

    :)

Good pics. I hope everyone is ready for Christmas. We finally got all our shopping done Saturday and my relatives are coming up to our house tomorrow. It'll be the first time in 13 years (since we moved from Tarkington to Central Texas) that we'll have Christmas at our house.

  11. *Oh my gosh, I want to come home in the evening to find them sitting in my living room listening to the radio.*

Me too :x. Here?s another cute pic of Gary with a dog.

I?m not much of an animal or kid person, but seeing him with either one of those just makes me melt.

Here?s a cute one of Gary with a little boy. I think it?s maybe his nephew or a young cousin but I?m not sure.

That?s funny about carrying around that pic with you. Us Gary fans are waaaay too much alike sometimes ? ha!

  12. I like *Distant Drums* too, it?s a fun movie. The color looks good for most of the movie but there are a few scenes that look like they could use some restoration. I guess we shouldn?t complain though b/c at least it?s out on dvd. They also used real Seminoles for this one instead of white people with bronzer ;). I call them the disco Indians b/c they sure are wearing some flashy clothes :).

  13. Well, my fave old shows are *Andy Griffith*, *I Love Lucy*, *Beverly Hillbillies*, and *Ozzie and Harriet*. It's been years since I've seen any *Patty Duke*, *Mister Ed*, or *Donna Reed* episodes but I used to love those too. They just released the first season of *Donna Reed* and I'm hoping to get it for Christmas.

My absolute favorite TV character is Don Knotts as Barney Fife. He was just awesome :x.

I also kinda like this guy ;) (Tom Welling from *Smallville* ).

  14. *As for myself, I'm going to make the top photo a bit smaller so I can fit it into my wallet.*

I don?t know if you?re joking or not but I actually do carry around a wallet sized pic of a picture I took of Sugarbritches (Brad Ausmus, my fave Astro) in my checkbook :). I?ve been meaning to do the same for Gary and when I finally got around to it I realized my printer was acting up and not printing pictures correctly. I gotta get that fixed :(.

I didn?t realize those would be so big when I posted them. Oh well, I guess it?s alright ;).

I've had quite a few dreams about him in that outfit - yummy!!!

  15. Here?s a link to Gary?s page at the Doctor Macro website. It looks like they uploaded some more pics and even of the ones we already have, these may be higher quality images.

    *Merry Gary Christmas!!*

There were a lot of pics so I didn?t want to post them all but I couldn?t resist posting these beautiful color shots from *Distant Drums*. :x

    I think I?m feeling a little lightheaded :P.

  16. That?s nine cats too many! ;)

Every Christmas here in Austin there are a group of tuba players who get together and play Christmas songs on the steps of the capital building. I work about a block from there so we usually walk over and listen to them and they?re having it again this Friday. Maybe this guy will show up this year :x.

  17. Hey TV's Frank!

*"Keep down" is an order. The Pirates must keep down in the standings.*

I have a feeling my ?stros will be joining you this season ? ugh!

*I just watched your "Coop as Bond" video. That was highly creative and nicely pieced together. Bravo!*

Thanks! The first time I saw *City Streets* (the last few clips are from that one) I couldn?t help but notice how much Gary looked like a James Bond type character in the end scenes. I?d been wanting to do this video for awhile and I?m glad it turned out well.

*Did you have to blow the dust off of The Fountainhead DVD?*

I may have only seen that one all the way through once, but there are a couple of scenes I have watched many, many times :P.

Phew! I think I?m gonna have to go outside and cool off ;).
