I have this one of Gary Cooper that I just found yesterday.
-
John sent me a link to an article about the new movie *The Curious Case of Benjamin Button* and there is a Gary mention in it. *Dressing Pitt's character was a unique challenge because he "has to be both old and young at once," she says. He also is a character always out of sync with his surroundings, prompting West to tap into the clothes of each era's screen rebels. "I used Gary Cooper in the '40s for my inspiration, Marlon Brando in the '50s, Steve McQueen in the '60s," she says.* Here's the whole article. http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117997242.html?categoryId=3275&cs=1

*A Man From Wyoming* *Along Came Jones* *Promo shots* *This one gave me palpitations!* *NWMP* *Looking good in uniform in Only the Brave*

That pic is from *A Man From Wyoming* (1930) and that's June Collyer with Gary. Thanks for posting it, I've never seen this one .

Here?s another song I found that reminds me of Gary. It?s slow and would probably not work right for a video but it?s still a nice song. *He Was Beautiful by Shirley Bassey* He was beautiful Beautiful to my eyes From the moment I saw him The sun filled the sky He was so, so beautiful Beautiful just to hold In my dreams he was springtime Winter was cold How could I tell him What I so clearly could see Though I longed for him Another trusted me completely, so I never could be free It was beautiful Knowing now that he cares I will always remember moments we shared Now it's all over Still the feelings linger on For my dream keeps returning Now that he's gone For it was beautiful Beautiful Beautiful to be loved

I have noticed a difference in the TCM signal since I got the HD receiver. Some movies look a little better, maybe a little sharper. If the print isn?t too good though, I can see the flaws a little bit more but it?s not bad b/c it?s not actually in HD. I am curious though what will happen in the future as everything will eventually be in HD I would guess. Since the resolution in HD is higher you get more details but that isn?t good if you have a bad print. Any scratches or flaws will be more visible in HD whereas in standard def, they might not have been seen at all. This could definitely hurt stations like TCM. Some of the old movies I have look great in my bluray player that upconverts standard dvd?s to near HD but others look real grainy and actually look worse. For example *High Noon* looks like it?s in HD in that player but *Sergeant York* is grainy and dark. It?s really seems to be hit or miss on which ones look better on the bluray though.

Wonderful job Fred describing all the timing with the scenes. *High Noon* is one of my very favorite films and it?s really a shame it didn?t win Best Picture for ?52 as it such a well crafted and acted film. In the script there are notes about the timing of the clocks and like you have explained they were always intended to be a part of the film. I believe what was changed after the preview screenings was to include more refrains from the theme song throughout the film and not more shots of clocks as they were already in there. This was an independently made film (distributed by United Artists) and they only had one month to shoot it. It?s really impressive that in such a short span of time they were able to make such a powerful and lasting film, a true classic. With the complex timing of the clocks and action, it would have been easy to get messed up somewhere and have something be off but there don?t seem to be any continuity issues at least as far as the clocks go. I have noticed a couple things though like Gary putting down his hat when he goes to visit Katy Jurado, then he?s holding it again when it should still be sitting on the chair. Also after the children leave the church we see a few shots without them and then they are back again. All movies have things like this though and these aren?t really that bad and it took several viewings before I noticed them. There is also another thing that seems to be a continuity issue but there is an explanation for it. When Gary goes into the saloon to raise a posse one of the men tells him he only has two deputies now. Originally there was another deputy character who was out of town at the time and they did film a couple scenes with him but then they cut them out and just didn?t have the time or money to go back and reshoot that scene. This was explained in the doc on the newest dvd release of the film. Here?s a link to it and this is definitely the version everyone should have of this one and it has some wonderful extras and the print is absolutely flawless. http://www.amazon.com/High-Noon-Two-Disc-Ultimate-Collectors/dp/B0016MLIKM/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1229012351&sr=8-2

Yeah we have DirecTV. We switched to that from cable about three years ago b/c the channel we normally watched the Astros games on was going to switch to showing Rangers games instead but on satellite we could get the Fox Sports Houston channel that broadcasts all their games. We?ve been much happier with it too as the signal quality is much better than cable. We had digital cable but only a few of the channels were actually digital whereas all the sat channels are and like I said sat has more HD channels too. Funny thing happened last night. I had it on TCM but wasn?t really watching the movie that was on so I put in *High Noon* instead. Then when the movie was over about 9:30 I turned it back on the tv and TCM was showing it too and it was about 30 minutes into it, talk about d?j? vu ? ha! I saw in another thread this morning that it was part of the guest programmer line up chosen by Frank Miller. One of the posters thought it was funny that he didn?t say anything about his name being the same as the main bad guy in that one; that is funny!

I got the Murnau/Borzage at Fox set a few days ago and it?s really neat. The two books that come with it are well done and one is devoted to the lost film *Four Devils* and it basically recreates the film in print as best as they came with all the info that is available about it. The other book contains stills and behind the scene pics and info about the two directors and their films made at the studio. Nearly all the movies have extras as well including photo still galleries. I?ve watched a little bit of all the films and they all look very nice. I would say *Seventh Heaven* and *The River* (reconstructed version) are the worst quality but that doesn?t mean they are bad. They look fine, just not as sharp as the others. I was most impressed with *City Girl* and *Liliom*, they look like brand new films. All the others though are excellent too and it?s so nice to be able to see so many silents and early talkies in such high quality. None of the films have tinting though and that's the only negative so far. I really wish other studios would put as much care into their classic releases as Fox does; I?m looking at you Paramount/Universal . So far I have watched *After Tomorrow* and *Bad Girl*, both directed by Borzage. I really like his style and was very impressed with both of these which were new to me. Both precode films, they show a very realistic picture of life in the early years of the depression for regular working people and while there is frank talk of sex and pregnancy, it?s never vulgar or lurid and although I think for the most part the production code was good for the movie industry, it?s a shame that films like these would not have been possible during those years.

Neat article! I'm glad you're going HD! It's such a big difference. We have satellite so I don't know what all is available on cable but I know sat has more HD channels but living in an apartment I guess you couldn't get sat programming. Hopefully you'll get some good stuff though . I had another Gary dream last night and it was a good one. Gary looked like he did in *Distant Drums* and I?m not sure but I think he was a professor and me and Carole Lombard were students at the same school. We both had a big crush on him and he was friends with us but I don?t think we were currently in any of his classes. Me and Carole were in the library talking to another one of the professors when Gary and his younger brother (which he had in the dream) walked up. He wanted to talk to the other guy. He had decided to do some kind of big research project but the deadline to submit his proposal was the next day and he didn?t think he could get anything together before then. Well me and Carole spoke right up and volunteered to help him do the research part of it and he was surprised and glad that we were willing to help him. His brother said he would help too so once he explained what it was about we all went off and started getting books and journals together. Then in the same dream it cuts to some place outside and there were a bunch of young people and I think they were all students too. Then we all got together at a Mexican restaurant and they had a big table all set up for us. Carole and I along with a few others were late getting there and there wasn?t any room left at that big table but there was one they had stuck on next to it but it was still kinda separate from it. When our late group came in Gary who was sitting at the end of the main table next to the other one they had added, said ?there?s room here by us scraps?. Everybody laughed and we went and sat at that table but Carole and I sat the farthest away from him b/c we didn?t want people to know we had a crush on him. He was behind me and I kept wanting to turn around so I could see him but I didn?t. One of the other girls in our group somehow became suspicious that I was having an affair with someone that I shouldn?t and she kept trying to get the info out of me but I didn?t tell her. Carole didn?t know either that Gary and I were having a fling and she kept giving me a funny look like she was wanting to tell me not to get involved with him. I don?t think he was married or anything but there was a feeling there like it was wrong and that was it. Unfortunately I didn?t actually dream about the fling part .

Here's the dreams I had a couple days ago about Gary. Earlier in the day I had read an article in an old movie mag I just got that day about how Charles Farrell knew Jobyna Ralston and introduced her to Richard Arlen at a party b/c he thought they would make a good couple and they did end up getting married and it also said she became friends with Buddy Rogers and Gary b/c all of those guys were friends. Well, that night I had a dream about that. It was in the late 20s just like in the article and I was at a party and Charles introduced me to Gary and he looked like he did in the late 20s. I don?t think either of them were famous though. We hit it off great and hung out together and talked the rest of the night. This same night I had another dream about him and we were just friends but I did have a little crush on him. He looked like he did in *The Real Glory* and he had on the whole uniform, even the hat. We were around my grandma's house and where their neighbor's house is there was a palace instead. It looked like a fairy tale palace and it was a dark cream color with a lighter color painted around the balconies and stuff. It had been raining but now the sun came out and it was beautiful. Someone said there were a bunch of rainbows outside so Gary and I went outside to look at them. While we were looking around, I started giggling and he asked me what was so funny. I got up close to him and put my hand on his shoulder and told him I was just thinking how perfect he would be dressed up like Prince Charming and he would look great shimmying up the trellis to rescue a Princess up in one of the towers. I knew he wasn?t gonna like that and he?d just tell me to stop being silly so before he could say anything I just giggled again and ran off towards my grandma's house.

You know I write all of them down . Maybe I should password protect that file so I only I can get into it ? ha! I?ve been sick the past several days and my voice still sounds pretty bad so I can?t talk too well but I?ll call you later this week, it?s bound to get better by then. The center of the earth dream was hilarious, you gotta post it!! The shorts overalls - that was too funny!!! He needed to be wearing leather pants....and nothing else .
-
I don?t watch that MGM channel much b/c they don?t show many old movies so yeah I was pretty freaked out yesterday when I saw all those movies were gonna be on, and in primetime no less . That dream was too cute and I?m glad he was finally able to get out of the overalls and in to something else. I?m guessing he was washing his overalls b/c he seems to wear them quite a bit, at least he does in your dreams. I had a couple more dreams about him a few days ago but now I can?t remember them. I wrote ?em down though so I?ll have to refresh my memory then I?ll post them. I can?t see youtube stuff at work so I?ll have to watch it when I get home.

If you do decide to upgrade to HD programming, I would go with satellite (we have DirecTV) b/c they offer more HD channels than cable. I don?t watch enough TV shows to need a Tivo so I don?t have one of those. I don?t have the DVR either and my dvd recorder isn?t compatible with the HD satellite box so I can?t record anything from that TV. I either need to get the HD DVR box (my cousin has it and he loves it) or a dvd recorder with the right hook ups. As it is now, I record off another tv that doesn?t have the HD stuff. I would like the see the *Planet Earth* stuff in HD but it?s not something I would rewatch and since it?s pretty expensive, I?ll pass on buying it. I do like to watch the History channel, the Science channel, and stuff like that on the HD channels and that?s really neat. Sometimes though I get grossed out watch ball games b/c if the players have injuries like cuts or gross looking scabs, they look even worse in high definition. That?s about the only drawback though .

I have the MGM HD movie channel and every now and then they?ll show an old movie but not very often. When I got home yesterday I was flipping through the channels and I came to that one and actually came very close to fainting b/c they were showing *Marco Polo* with Gary!!!! Even though it?s December I had to turn my ceiling fan on b/c I literally got flushed all over. I had only missed about 15 minutes of it. I hit the program guide to see what else was coming on and nearly fell out again b/c after that they showed *The Winning of Barbara Worth* (the first silent film I?ve seen in HD and it was in primetime too) and then after that *Pride of the Yankees*. I?m not sure why they were showing so many of his movies in a row like that but whatever the reason, it was great and I didn?t move off the couch all evening. There are some scenes in *Marco Polo* where you can see his chest hair and in HD it was nearly too much for me to take . If I watch the newest dvd release of *PotY* in my bluray player, it looks like it did on the HD channel. The newest version of *High Noon* and *The Westerner* also look practically like they?re in HD on that player so that?s cool to know how well a job it does in upconverting some non-HD movies. I had been hoping they would eventually show some of his movies but since TCM shows so many of MGM?s classics I didn?t hold out much hope b/c they rarely show anything earlier than the 70s on the MGM channel. It hasn?t been around too long though so maybe they will increase their programming and show more of their old ones.

Once you go high def, there?s no going back. I?ve got a 50? plasma and a Sony bluray player and I absolutely love them :x. We also have HD satellite programming and it?s just great. I love watching baseball games in HD. They are so great, I didn?t even go to a single Astros game last season. It?s still fun to go to the games but we live 150 miles away and you can?t beat the views you get on tv, especially if it?s in HD. Nature shows and stuff like that looks really outstanding in HD too. So far I only have *Blazing Saddles*, *20 Million Miles to Earth*, *Superman* (the original with Christopher Reeve), and *Sleeping Beauty* on bluray as far as classics go. I?ve got *Earth Vs. Flying Saucers* and *Day the Earth Stood Still* (the original of course) on bluray on my wish list for Santa. We get the MGM HD movie channel and every now and then they?ll show on old movie but not very often. When I got home yesterday I was flipping through the channels and I came to that one and actually came very close to fainting b/c they were showing *Marco Polo* with Gary Cooper!!!! I had to turn my ceiling fan on b/c I literally got flushed all over. I had only missed about 15 minutes of it. I hit the program guide to see what else was coming on and nearly fell out again b/c after that they showed one of his silent movies *The Winning of Barbara Worth* and then one of my absolute faves *Pride of the Yankees*. They looked fantastic too!!

That?s so funny that you should make the comparison between Jackman (who has totally got it going on ) and Gary b/c others have as well. John Mulholland (film historian and Gary expert) told me a couple weeks ago that he thought the same thing. He was at a preview screening of *Australia* in New York and Jackman, Kidman and the director were there and they spoke some after the film. John said he was thinking how much Jackman reminded him of Gary and then he said someone else in the audience brought up the similarities to Jackman and he was blown away. He said that was one of the highest compliments he could get as he was a big fan of Gary?s. Kidman also chimed in how much she liked Gary and how great he was especially in *High Noon*. John thinks he might be a good fit for Will Kane in the *High Noon* remake if it does get made, which he and I?m sure many others hope doesn?t happen. He would probably be a good choice, but no matter who?s in it, I?m gonna skip it. He also said if they ever remade *The Westerner* that he could see Jackman as Cole Harden and I totally agree with him on that one. Now I?ve got the image of both Gary and Hugh Jackman wearing this outfit ? yummy!!!! I like Jackman b/c he seems like a pretty regular guy; he has a normal family life and doesn?t end up in the tabloids. He just does his job and he does it very well. I haven?t seen Australia yet b/c the first week it came out we were too busy that weekend and I?ve been sick for the past several days (still a little sick but I had to go back to work ? yuck) so I missed it this weekend too. As for Gary as Wolverine, that would be pretty cool :x.

I totally have the hots for Will Kane from *High Noon* :x. Cole Hardin from *The Westerner* And, Chico from *Seventh Heaven*

Alright, I guess I'll give you Melody back if you stay away from my Will . That's cool about your computer too.

Here?s the Skankees Arod getting ?pwned? by the Red Sox catcher a few years ago after Arod actually tried to slap the ball out of his glove so he wouldn?t get tagged out.

I found this cute cartoon on one of my fave Astros sites and thought I?d post it. It?s from ?62 when it was announced that Houston would be getting a major league baseball teamed originally called the Colt .45s then changed to the Astros a few years later. Hey Frank, I notice your guy seems to be the most scared . Me and my friend Lisa watched the movie *The Doors* so many times in high school, I?m sure I have the whole thing memorized. I think *Five to One* is my fave song of theirs. When I was in Paris in ?97 we went to the cemetery he?s buried in and there is always a guard posted near his grave to keep people from messing with it.

*Isn't this the show you could only watch in Canada?* It was Canadian but it was broadcast in the U.S. I was just a kid when it was originally on and I caught the repeats on cable when I was in high school.
