*Angie, remember Sammy Maudlin and Lola Heatherton? LOL "Sammy, I wanna have your baby!"* *And the great John Candy with "Dr. Tongue's House of Stewardesses...."* Those were great! I loved Monster Horror Chiller Theater too. I loved when they would try to do 3-D by just moving closer to the camera, it cracks me up just thinking about it. They did a great parody of *The Towering Inferno* too.

SCTV is on the air!! Man, who didn?t love this show?! I need to get some of the dvd?s b/c it?s been years since I?ve seen and I loved it. These guys are my fave :x. Hey hoser!

My fave part was seeing what kind of music he liked. I?ve been very curious about that. I thought it was neat too about him wanting to be a doctor and was also impressed with the kinds of books he liked to read. It?s so funny that most people had such a different image of him, as the simple cowboy, when really he was a fascinating, multidimensional person. I noticed too in the caption under the pic of him and Claudette Colbert that it said they were best friends. I?ve got a bunch of pics of them sitting together at parties and studio events and I figured they must have been pretty good friends. I read in another article I have where Claudette was talking about a scene in *Bluebeard?s Eighth Wife* when she had to sit on his lap for a long time (what torture ? ha!). She said he had really boney knees; too funny!!

Here?s a neat article that gives us a nice glimpse into Gary?s personality. It's not complete though, but still interesting.

Hi Cinemaven, You can post here anytime, we won?t bite . I watched *Man of the West* too yesterday and he was very good in that one playing a complex character who once was bad and is now trying to be good and stay good. *I also went to the Lighthouse for the Blind here in NYC where they had a night of celebrity home movies, and there was Maria Cooper Janis speaking of her 'Daddy.' She was a striking looking woman, and you can hear in her voice, she still loves her father.* She was one of the few fortunate Hollywood kids in that she was very close to both of her parents and they actually raised her themselves, instead of dumping her off with a nanny. If I had to guess I would say Gary probably loved his daughter more than anyone else. She was his absolute pride and joy and Maria has said many times that she could not have asked for a better father. Miss G is right about seeing him on a big screen. Yeah the screen is obviously bigger, but it?s more than that. Every subtle little movement and gesture are magnified and it makes his performances even more impressive. She was right too about how the great ones seem even better on a big screen and anytime you get a chance to see one of your faves in that format, don?t miss it! I won?t ever forget seeing Gary on a big screen for the first time in one of my very faves, *High Noon*. He seemed absolutely gigantic (we were also sitting about as close to the screen as we could without getting neck strain) and we just couldn?t get over how big he was ? it was great!! :x

Here's a pic of Gary and his dad from 1930 from the latest movie mag I got.

Happy Thanksgiving y?all! For you non-MSTies out there it?s the robot Crow from *Mystery Science Theater 3000* dressed as a turkey. MST3K, my fave show, debuted 20 years ago on Thanksgiving, and for that I am truly thankful .

Who wouldn?t want to be lassoed and corralled by this cowpoke? I think maybe I like him as a cowboy more b/c it seems more like his real personality of being an outdoorsy, manly kind of guy. He was also comfortable at fancy parties and art galleries but if he hadn?t been a movie star, how often would he have had an occasion to get all gussied up like that? Probably not too often. Also having grown up partly on a ranch makes him more convincing as a cowboy than other ?Hollywood cowboys? like Roy Rogers. Real cowboys do not wear rhinestones .

I just realized something funny. I?ve got several pics of Gary along with Clara Bow and some of my fave baseball players up in my cubicle and out of the 8 pics of Gary, he?s dressed like a cowboy in 5 of them. He?s a soldier in two and in a regular suit in one. Don?t tell Theresa, but one of the pics is of her Melody Jones .
-
I'm stuck at work so no Gary for me . Those are two great ones too. As good as he looked in formal wear, my heart will always belong a little bit more to the cowboy :x.
-
I?m glad you got to see both of those . My mom?s fave ?Gary? is him young and in formal wear. Nobody ever looked better in fancy clothes than he did. When we saw *Design for Living* in a theater and Gary walked in wearing his white tie and tails, there was an audible 'wow!' from the women in the audience . I read a funny story in one of the new articles I got that talked about Gary?s first time to wear a tux in a movie. He had to provide his own suit for the shoot and he had a tux but hadn?t worn it in a while and when he put it on the night before the pants were too short. So his mom found some black ribbon and taped it to the bottom of his pants to make them look longer ? ha! Don?t know if it?s true or not but it?s still funny and definitely sounds like something a mother would do. I love this pic from *Now and Forever*, it?s beyond adorable.

*On the set of Wolf Song 1929* What this caption neglects to say is he must drop the blanket and dive into the stream wearning nuthin' but a smile . *Gary Cooper at age 4 on left and age 18 on right* *Gary Cooper with niece and nephew in the 30s*
-
*~and Gary Cooper looks great in every colour!* I can't argue with that!
-
I'm glad you liked 'em . That's neat about the book and that pic that you saw when you were little. One that really tickled me was right above it in the article and I cropped it out and posted it earlier (a couple days ago I think) from *Wolf Song*. He's sitting near the edge of the water with a fishing pole and a blanket wrapped around him b/c he didn't really have any wardrobe for that particular scene. I guess somebody gave him the blanket to wear inbetween takes - ha! I liked the thing too about his suitcase b/c you can see he had two books with him b/c he did like to read even if the public didn't think so .

Here?s some more scrapbook stuff. *Here?s Gary with his niece and nephew* *Here he is with his niece again all grown up on the Saratoga Trunk set* *Gary and Rocky at the beach ? I didn?t mean to cut off her head but I was too tired to go back and redo it* *I want to go back in time and win a beauty contest if this is the prize!* *I love this one* *This one totally freaked me out. I knew Gary had been made up once to like Lincoln and he was the first person offered the role in the movie version of the play Abe Lincoln in Illinois but he turned it down b/c Raymond Massey did such a good job in the play, that he wanted them to give the role to him. It?s pretty freaky how much he looked like Lincoln.*

I'm not sure if specific colors were used to show different emotions but you are right that they were often used to show different times of day and things like. In most of the silents I?ve seen so far pink was used for interior shots, yellow for outside during the day, blue for outside at night, and red if there is a fire. Of course, there is plenty of room for variation. I love the colors used on the Kino dvd version of *Nosferatu* but I don?t know if they are the original tints or not. Either way it?s one of the most beautifully tinted silents I?ve seen. The colors are very different and very lovely with shades of green I?ve never seen used in other films (at least not so far). Some films like the MGM version of *The Winning of Barbara Worth* which I believe has the original tints, used very strong versions of the pinks, yellows, and blues. Here are some screencaps so you can see the effect. *Nosferatu - scary in any color* *Barbara Worth* *In this scene, pink was used to indicate early morning* Message was edited by: coopsgirl

This was the first time I had seen *Phantom of the Opera* all the way through and I really enjoyed it. I was sitting on the edge of my couch waiting for her to rip off the mask. It?s still creepy now so I can imagine how much that must have scared movie goers then. The Carl Davis score was beautiful and the print looked great. I haven?t seen *Orphans* either but I recorded it too. Keep these wonderful silents coming TCM !

*I think that Lupe could manage to make anything funny.* I completely agree with you there. She had great comedic timing and I love the *Mexican Spitfire* series. Well, actually I?ve only had time to watch the first one, but it was so laugh out loud funny that I watched twice in a row. I can?t wait to get time to watch the others and *Hollywood Party* which I recorded this morning.

I have a few pics of him wearing glasses but he didn't wear them very often; probably just for reading sometimes. I looooove Superman and even though he may have been named partly after Clark Gable, he's definitely more like Gary Cooper :x. Here's another cute pic from one of his lost silents with Fay Wray, *The First Kiss*.

Here's some neat stuff I got in that last big clipping packet from ebay. *On the set of Wolf Song* *Young Gary* *I love this one of him in glasses. He looks like he's about to run into a phone booth and turn into Superman :x*

This is really freaky and really funny you guys. A while back I had that dream that Gary and I were fishing and he caught an octopus and was teasing me threatening to put it on me and I ran away. Well, I was scanning the stuff in my Gary scrapbooks the past couple days and lo and behold I found this pic of Gary with an octopus!!! I got the packet of Coop clippings this was in just before I had that dream and I guess I saw it as I was going through it and putting it in my scrapbook (or books as I have four of them now and they are bursting at the seams even with the refill pages I put in them) but I don't remember it really standing out probably b/c that particular packet had about 250 pieces in it and the pic is actually pretty small.

Here's the thing I told you about that Gary wrote on a pic that he gave to Clara Bow. *To Clarita, whom I love, whose beauty and life by day are real as the sun at noon, and by night have all the mysteries and allure of the northern lights, with the softness of the summer moon, you are that, I love you, Garyito* :x
-
I?m older than you and I?m bigger than you (okay, we?re practically the same size) and I?ll take Melody if I want him!!! I?ll also take him from *The Westerner* and *High Noon* and there?s nothing you can do to stop me . I?ve got that Melody Jones pic on my desktop and I can?t help but goofily smile every time I see it :x.
-
Hey Sis! Did you see the stuff I posted in the Gary thread about the Life mag photo archive online? The first few pics I found where all from *Along Came Jones* and they were ones like the one below that we haven?t seen before. Man, I might just have to steal Melody Jones away from you. You know older cowboy Gary is my little heart?s desire :x. Here?s the link again. http://images.google.com/images?q=gary+cooper&q=source%3Alife

He was a man of many talents; kissing and other romantic activities included . John also told me he was a very good writer and I have read that before. Specifically in David Sten?s book about Clara Bow, he said that Gary wrote her many beautiful love letters but she burned all of them around the time of her assistant?s trial for embezzlement so they couldn?t be used against her as they were bringing up a lot of her old boyfriends trying to make her look like a **** and tear down her character; even though she wasn?t the one on trial. She did keep a pic of him that he gave her and it had a beautiful note written on it. I?ll have to look it up when I get home and post it so you can read it.
