  1. Jeff, don't worry too much about who does or doesn't show up on a so-called "regular" basis. You are read and enjoyed. For various reasons, on many threads, people weave in and out, but it doesn't mean lack of interest. Some prefer lurking occasionally and don't feel like chiming in, who knows why? You are keeping the silents alive! Just keep doing what you love and "they" will come.

Hope you had a great holiday!

  2. Sans, I'm a comic strip fan ("For Better Or For Worse" is one of my favorites) and I have to say that I totally get why you enjoy "Heavenly Nostrils" -- it's intelligent, quirky, deadpan, ironic, philosophical, witty, rebellious, clear-headed, surreal, and a bit outrageous, lol!

Have you ever seen Louis Malle's BLACK MOON? It's got a unicorn, and then some....I can't get this film out of my mind.

Usually described as "an apocalyptic Alice-In-Wonderland". I think you'll really enjoy it!

  3. My favorite '50's Tierney film has to be THE EGYPTIAN. Gene is just fantastic as the scheming, aggressive sister of pharoah Michael Wilding, summoning up all her LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN charisma, but in a much more, oh, "mature" way.

Regarding the A&C line-up: I haven't seen DANCE WITH ME, HENRY. There's a review of mine on JACK AND THE BEANSTALK somewhere on the board, but who knows what I said about it, lol. I always avoid MEET CAPTAIN KIDD. I don't remember RIO RITA too well, except that I think they bring in Lionel Atwill and a topical Nazi theme. I always confuse LOST IN A HAREM with IN HOLLYWOOD but basically can't recall either. (it's fun being a Baby Boomer -- NOT!) MEET THE MUMMY has some funny bits but overall it's pretty stale. Bud actually looks bigger than Lou in this one.

You don't often associate Dan Duryea with cults, do you, lol? I've really got to watch MINISTRY OF FEAR again. Not that I would know, but I'm thinking that MAN HUNT is probably Lang's best WWII thriller, even if, like Hitch's FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT, it's more of an early warning signal for America and the world to become aware of the brewing storm in Europe.

  4. The one Stanwyck western I've never even heard of is TROOPER HOOK. I think I've seen bits and pieces of THE MOONLIGHTER, which reunites her for, what, the third time, with Fred MacMurray.

Unfortunately Gene's better films are not on display this week. I'm guessing that THE LEFT HAND OF GOD won't do her justice either.

I'm so happy to spend New Year's Eve with Bud and Lou! I can regress and pretend I'm 12 again. I must lay in the appropriate "retro" snacks; i.e., Mallomars.

I'm far from a Lang expert as you know, but I don't think MINISTRY OF FEAR is one of his better films. I appreciate the creepy atmosphere, but the whole production has a sort of, I don't know, programmer feel to it, sort of like those '40's Universal Sherlock Holmes with Rathbone and Bruce fighting the Nazis. But I probably need to take yet another look.

  5. >I do hope you enjoy it. Anthony Hopkins defines his role. Blythe Danner demonstrates a range in her performance. The plot is nicely twisty which I like very much. I did not foresee the ending which is a major plus>

You not being able to anticipate the ending bodes well for it! I'll definitely add this to my Must-See list over the holiday.

  6. > It's one of those tantalizingly chilling films that make you wonder about those you love. :D

I get that paranoid feeling every time I watch 48 Hours, Snapped, City Confidential, and especially Who (The Bleep) Did I Marry?, lol.
