GWTW Named All Time Favorite in Poll
Bronxgirl48 replied to MissGoddess's topic in Films and Filmmakers
My disappointing romance with a Scots guy from Glasgow hasn't dampened my enthusiasm for visiting the country and getting acquainted with the people. You're right, it is a trip I need to take, sooner rather than later. I also was going to try that matchmaking festival in Ireland. (featured in the 1997 THE MATCHMAKER, with Janeane Garofalo and scruffily adorable David O'Hara) -

Och, yes, I can't stay in Boca another minute. My heart aches for those wee bonny pups and a lot of cashmere. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48 -
Actually I think members of the Westmore family did the makeup for both those movies!

I haven't seen ALL THIS AND HEAVEN TOO but I know what you mean; Bette has an old fashioned quality about her face that lends itself very well to that kind of demure hairstyle of the period. In MR. SKEFFINGTON when she gets diptheria and wears the ringlets, she looks like Baby Jane Hudson. But early in the film she really looks beautiful with her Gibson Girl hairstyle. It really suits her I think. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

Here are puppy dog eyes in all their romantic British working-dog, heather-on-the-hills, Burberry trenchcoat, mud boots glory. I want to marry the narrator, wear tweed, tend to my border collies, and ride into the quaint village with my bicycle. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48 -
Pride and Prejudice (1940) A TRUE Romance!
Bronxgirl48 replied to butterscotchgreer's topic in Films and Filmmakers
I like Colin Firth in other romantic parts, but for my money no one can beat Olivier as Darcy and Greer as Elizabeth. -
I actually would justify buying Twinkies and cupcakes by telling myself, "If they're good enough for Ann Blyth...." Bette's hair in BEYOND THE FOREST was pretty hideous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q692iEqZEa4 Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

I missed the first half hour of WHITE CARGO unfortunately (the whole "buildup" to her) I like the title; it has that lurid Hollywood touch, all colonialism and titillation. I haven't seen THE FAR HORIZONS. Maybe Donna Reed as an Indian uses that same bronzed makeup as Hedy.

I really felt for him too in that scene. I think this is Marilyn's best dramatic work..

I used to watch this commercial back in the Bronx: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrLAZqa7XCM&feature=related

I'm glad you liked it. I especially enjoyed Ann's facial expressions, they were so over the top; I loved how she kept arching her eyebrows. As Lovsky says, what woman wouldn't give her eye-teeth (or something) for that secret. She can feed her ego with the cute guys as she's stringing them along until the bitter end. I love the double-twist of the story, it's so creepy. You just think her big secret is that she's maybe "only" 50 years older than she really is, and then...... Charles Beaumont was a great fantasy writer. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

Just saw THE MISFITS again this evening. Gable is great.

Whichever way she says it, doesn't the word sound like the title of a Gipsy Kings song? "Tondelayo, tondelayo....." Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

I was rolling on the floor myself when I viewed it. The Mommie Dearest Xmas tree is no doubt being uploaded by someone as we speak.

Wow. Hard to believe Celia was ever so young, lol. Great photo.

Enjoy, Goddess.

Celia was also once married to Peter Lorre!

If you thought she was deadly as Veda in MILDRED PIERCE, watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJcWoAOhM-w http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xuau2YOaaA&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxA0OShQydU&feature=related Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

Fred's right about the third person Hollywood "primitive" talk. Yes, now that I think about it, Johnny Weissmuller used to speak like that: "Jane no leave Tarzan?", etc. Probably another example of the "noble savage" concept, where that particular mode of expression is supposed to represent self-pride, but it just comes across as silly and condescending. "Strangers When We Meet", good movie
Bronxgirl48 replied to FredCDobbs's topic in General Discussions
I'm not sure I completely understood it. I think the house that Kirk was building for Ernie was supposed to symbolize how one constructs a life with meaning. Or something like that. Expressing one's individuality but at the same time having good foundations? Who knows. -
Why does she always talk in the third person?
