I'm going to start having nightmares of Hume Cronyn again, LOL. (Re: that photo) By the way, I actually had a nightmare about Burt last night. I dreamt he was J.J. Hunsecker chasing me up the stairs. You all know how scary he is in that role. I KNEW I shouldn't have eaten that sweet and sour shrimp and followed it up with a Snickers bar. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

LOL, although I like John in THE GRIFTERS.

it's hard for me to think of Addison in the throes of passion, but I guess a character like his can only relate to women either from the "Copacabana School of Dramatic Arts" or as twisted as Eve.

Raging Bull (1980) - The Most Overrated Movie EVER

I have to agree with that reviewer. -
I saw NOBODY LIVES FOREVER and was so disappointed. Predictable at EVERY turn. They glam up Geraldine. She gives a subtle, sympathetic performance, however. Not five minutes into the opening, as soon as Garfield leaves the army hospital and tells us he's got $50,000 and Faye Emerson waiting for him, you KNOW he's gonna be betrayed. George Coulouris's character is a pain in the arse. I knew what was coming with Walter Brennan, and it wasn't hard to figure out more or less what his last line would allude to.. Thanks, nightwalker. Hey, Mom, ONE MORE BLANKET!

metsfan, thank you so much for asking about Mom. She's coming along with the recovery, athough with this type of surgery (with a success rate of about 70 per cent) we'll know at the end of this month whether the vision in that one eye will fully return to normal. She can't imagine life without driving her car, so, we're all hoping for the best. Haven't seen CONQUEST OF COCHISE -- Is that Robert Stack (and his autograph), with perhaps John Hodiak as Cochise??

Raging Bull (1980) - The Most Overrated Movie EVER
Bronxgirl48 replied to Metropolisforever's topic in General Discussions
Stylistically, RAGING BULL intentionally resembles a 1940's boxing noir film (BODY AND SOUL)and DeNiro was made up to look remarkably like John Garfield (and he even sounds like him too in some scenes) It's all referential for film buffs, but imo emotionally empty. Yes, Shelley was terrific, and I also love Peter Sellers, Mason, and even Sue Lyon.

You're looking good, KK! Many happy returns of the day. Ann Darrow never really appreciated you, but ALL OF US DO!!

Love that Milpitas Monster trailer! Hmmm, dumbest monster movie ever made? Let me think awhile, there are so many... I'll get back to you on this!..

The creation of the robotrix is imo one of the greatest scenes in sci-fi movies, and I love Rudolph Klein-Rogge as Rotwang. Brigitte Helm is good too; all the other actors are pretty pathetic. The ending is weak: very preachy.and moralistic. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

12 Angry Men thumbs up or thumbs down

One of my favorites. A great American movie! -
Even though Mason did the driving, it was really Lo who took poor Humbert for a ride. Brilliant film all around; one of Kubricks' best, if not THE best imo.

I can never not watch it when it's on. "Why do they always look like unhappy rabbits?"

GREAT MOVIE! LOVE IT! (especially Louis Calhern and Sam Jaffe) I always remember Marc from HOLD THAT GHOST.. To Bud and Lou: "It'll be a pleasure to take you boys for a ride" Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

I always liked Schickel's book "The Disney Version", which came out in the sixties, and I've never forgotten this insightful story of the Dark Side of Uncle Walt. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

Over the closing credits of JOHN FORD GOES TO WAR, Bogdanovich is telling us that Ford made himself out more hard of hearing than he was. He tells Pappy that since it's a week to Duke's birthday, he's going to buy him a book. Ford: "HAH?" Peter: "It's his birthday next week and I'm buying him a book as a present" Ford: "HAH?" Peter: "I'M BUYING A BOOK FOR HIM AS A PRESENT!" Ford: "He already has a book". Seems the Gregg Toland-directed (with Ford's blessing) piece DECEMBER 7th was a real mish-mash, embarrassing too; Richard Schickel derides (but in a rather benevolent way) the death recreations of the soldiers "spinning around" melodramatically. And Walter Huston is pretty bad with that over-the-top propaganda dialogue. I didn't see the entire documentary, however. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

Hi, lz! Thanks so much for asking about Mom; hey, she'll knit blankets for ALL of you! Sydney Pollack, eh? There was a lot of cursing going on so I figured it must be late sixties. I wouldn't have figured him for the director. Haven't seen JEREMIAH JOHNSON. That is, I've always tried to avoid it, I don't know why. Maybe the same reason I avoid things like THE ELECTRIC HORSEMAN and COMES A HORSEMAN. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

Hello, dere. Well, Bronxgirl's mother won't be toolin' around in her whiz-mobile for about a month; she's healing but recovery will take a few weeks. But like I say she's tough and optimistic. She's even knitting me a throw blanket (with her head down in the chair) Nothing will stop her! So I get home today understandably tired; I want nothing more than to catch a nap; but reflexively I turn on the Western Channel. All of a sudden there's Shelley Winters in a movie that doesn't look familiar to me, stepping out of her wagon wearing a corset and red tights, yelling at Telly Savalas to stop smokin' tobacco or he'll wind up sleeping with their horse instead of her. (I imagine that's a tough choice) Now THAT woke me up real quick. Then there's my boy BURT hiding in the bushes!! And there's Ossie Davis! And I like the score! Lancaster talks to his horse a lot. I swear to all of you that this animal is more attractive than Shelley. Supposedly she's an ex-hooker now married to Mr. Lollipop and she wants to enter decent society and be a lady. HAH. I missed the first 30 minutes. (THE SCALPHUNTERS) Tried to figure out who directed it. Unusual camera angles and weird close-ups. (still haven't looked it up on the imdb board) Since Shelley, Burt and Telly were in a few films together, this one seemed like an entertaining western vehicle for them to have fun with while presenting tolerance about racial issues. Terrible prolonged fight scene between Ossie and Burt; SO FAKE!! Burt just punches the air, lol. So does Ossie. Did I miss you, FG? About as much as Shelly misses Telly when he goes off into the mountains and meets his fate. Rance, Rance, Rance.....oy vay. That beautiful, very Ford visual of Hallie framed by the kitchen door looking out into the night as Tom goes off "out of town" gives me pangs of sorrow; it's as if she's already mourning the loss of her girlhood, her childhood, her frustrated but oddly contentedly unsettled relationship with Tom. to make her choice to go forward as a more fully rounded individual with Stoddard. Doniphon uses his smirk and his casual humor as a defense mechanism. In reality, he is a man who feels deeply, not only about Hallie, but of all life I believe. On the other hand, Rance is all outward emotion but inside he's hard as steel. They are both tough in their own ways, but Tom is the more appealing figure for me, as a human being and as A MAN! Frankly, what it all boils down to is this, ladies: would you rather wake up every morning to Tom or to Rance? (I know I say I usually prefer the nerd, but....) I'd take Tom, and would convince him in EVERY way I could that education was important for my well-being as a human being and a woman. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

Hello, Goddess! Thank you so much for your concern and I miss all of you, too. I saw JOHN FORD GOES TO WAR last week-- loved Peter's closing anecdote, but I'm sure you know what it is! I also saw the James Stewart Henry Koster trilogy. (Ford and Wayne have nothing on them....) See you tomorrow with the expanded version of this wonderful effluvia.

Hi, guys -- wow, what juicy discussion! I haven't caught up reading it but I will. Scott, thanks so much for inquiring after my mother. She had the surgery this morning and came through fine and is home, and now has to endure 45 minutes head down in special chair, then 15 minutes walking around head up being normal -- an annoying recovery period for this type of macular surgery, and this has to be done all day. I'm taking her for a post-op check up tomorrow which is necessary the day after, and hopefully the doctor will cut the chair routine down to one week instead of two or three. (I was watching THE PARADINE CASE at her house and telling her the plot as she was head down in the chair -- she'd never seen it, and said, "Is that the movie with Lee Remick?" I told her that was another courtroom drama) I'll be back on the boards tomorrow afternoon-evening. Your cactus rose, Barb Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48
