Raging Bull (1980) - The Most Overrated Movie EVER
Bronxgirl48 replied to Metropolisforever's topic in General Discussions
I have always thought it was the most overrrated of his films and am glad to finally see someone in print actually say so. I thought I was almost alone in my feelings. kim, DeNiro's breakthrough really came earlier, in MEAN STREETS, which I think is Scorsese's masterpiece. Robert was unforgettable as Johnny Boy. DeNiro deserved his supporting Oscar for GODFATHER II, and should have won Best Actor for TAXI DRIVER. Donald Sutherland should have won Best Actor in 1980 for ORDINARY PEOPLE. Thanks. Oh, that review I did was for LADY IN CEMENT, which is easy to get confused with FATHOM, as Raquel is in both, and they're equally stupid.. -

I think it was a television version about twenty or so years ago, and Tony played the part of the pompous politician, or was that a banker -- the old guy who was a swindler, I don't remember the character's name.. -

HAHAHA; yes, Karl is still around. Hey! There's a connection between Tony Franciosa and John Ford! Well, sort of.....didn't Tony star in a version of STAGECOACH?? -

Yes, I'd certainly prefer DIPLOMATIC COURIER, where Karl Malden overacts just turning the steering wheel in the jeep, to FATHOM and ugh, PORKYS. -

In any language, he's the best: (SPOILER ALERT, however, for Spanish speakers in a crucial LIBERTY VALANCE clip, who've never seen the movie) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9_KEMKJeHI Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48 -

Hey, Goddess -- have you seen Tony Franciosa in a BLONDE WIG constantly crooning "Poppet" to Raquel Welch, in FATHOM? I caught some of it the other day. You might need Tums. -

I got carried away with LADY IN CEMENT; I should have made it its own thread in HOT TOPICS or G.D. Forgive me! In keeping with THIS thread, have you seen CHEYENNE AUTUMN, and how is it? -

I'm a big Whit Stillman fan and I love METROPOLITAN. I recommend THE LAST DAYS OF DISCO (you might never look at LADY AND THE TRAMP the same way again) BARCELONA is enjoyable as well. I haven't seen the original TONY ROME but just finished watching the, uh, "groovy" (anything but, LOL) sequel, the delightfully tacky LADY IN CEMENT. The cheesiest score ever, by Hugo Montenegro, with its sourish WA-WA-WA go-go melodies, as though someone from the Eisenhower period was bitterly composing a love/hate paen to the late 60's. Which is what sets the tone for this Sinatra toss-off. It's supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, and feels compelled in an apparently off-handed (but really heavy-handed) manner to reference all the cultural touchtones of the era -- love-ins, mini-skirts, draft-card burning, psychedelic drugs ("Hey, are you on a TRIP?") police brutality, Dan Blocker watching "Bonanza". Ha-ha-ha-NOT! It's all as fresh as a Bob Hope tour of Vietnam. Raquel Welch's hair at one point threatens to overtake not only her entire body (a feat in itself) but the whole move, which wouldn't have been a bad thing. Laine Kazan overacts in that I'm-a-good-actress-because-I'm-a-good-singer" way, The usual unflattering over-the-top gay "villains". Richard Conte is along for the ride to apparently jostle our noir sensibilities but is merely the authoritarian foil for Frank''s obnoxious Miami shamus. Full-frontal female nudity, and none other than Ricou Browning (the swimming Creature from the Black Lagoon) is Frank's stunt double under water. The mystery never really keeps your interest. Some of the dialogue, when it's not being cornily concerned with the counterculture, is effectively hard-boiled for the genre, and Richard "Mel" Deacon gets in a few pungent lines. A tender Sinatra tribute to an ex-wife: "I once knew a broad who collected bullfighters". Ah, yes, he does it his way. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48 -

You're thinking that P&P MIGHT BE SAPPY? This classic work of fiction is timeless. You need to get with the program. You're "tottering on the brink" with that film, and I just may PUSH YOU OVER, but in that smiling charming Edmund Gwenn FOREIGN CORESPONDENT way. April references METROPOLITAN, which is a big fave with me -- I adore the Austen connection, and I love the characters, especially Nick. You'll fall in love with Audrey. I've only seen two Murnaus -- NOSFERATU and SUNRISE. Speaking of these classics, I'm gearing up now for LADY IN CEMENT on Retroplex. Yeah, baby! Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48 -

He defends her all right; she's number one on his hit parade, over Claudia! That's devotion! I'm just a girl who can't say yes.... -

Gloria actually looks fairly attractive in that first photo, with those black gloves. She has a certain cat-like allure although she doesn't conform to conventional beauty.. Did you know that she's descended from royalty? What are you, Woody Allen --- attracted to girls who play games and are emotional train wrecks?? That ain't good. My favorite Gene is Lucy, not Lucia. I like her plain and simple and a bit unsure. I don't like her Laura character -- as Mark tells her, "For a lovely and attractive girl you sure surround yourself with a prize collection of dopes". She's too kind-hearted for her own good (as Bessie knows) but she's also pretty stupid. I mean, WHO IN HELL WOULD CONSIDER MARRYING SHELBY??? (except Judith) And if Mark looked like Wally Cox she'd NEVER be interested in him. So oily muscle is still the measure of a man with her. (along with his complete devotion) Carol Lombard, eh? I hear George Raft said she was the "sexiest broad" in the world with a mouth like a sailor. He caught her in her dressing room **** as a jaybird, powdering herself, and was completely unselfconscious as he was ogling her. Double G over Crain? Are you referring to Elizabeth Bennett? Now Joan and Constance are fine, but you know that's not the B family I'm talkin' about. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48 -

We'll have to agree to disagree on Gloria. I once read that she put tissues behind her lips to pouf them out more. I'm not sure this enhanced her look. -

Peabody, LOL. So were you attracted to Scarlett? She's the perfect combo for you -- the cute girly-girl and the gritty tough broad. But you've got to keep her in line or she'll walk all over you. You're fixated on Gloria, but imo she's not EVEN PRETTY!! You don't really want to be in a lonely place, do you?? Wouldn't you rather be enscounced at Gull Cottage with a sweet woman (okay, she's got a ghost fetish, but you can turn her around with your alive self) Wouldn't you rather have lovely Jeanne Crain in your arms instead of the hot-blooded but untrustworthy noir babes? I realize Linda Darnell is pretty nigh irresistible but these ladies are exhausting and they'll ultimately betray you. RANDOM HARVEST is a step in the right direction, but it's still not good enough, my friend. You need to spend some time with the Bennett family. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48 -
I've seen a lot of horror films in my time, but (as I've said on these boards some time back) nothing can top Kenneth Branagh doing Woody Allen in CELEBRITY: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvCjldvErpo Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

Have you seen the 1940 Greer Garson-Lawrence Olivier PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, and loved it? If you have and did, you are redeemable. Wait, I'm reading that you say you HAVEN'T SEEN A VIVIEN LEIGH OR GREER GARSON MOVIE??? Are you just funnin', or is it true? And I was hurrying you to see CROSSING DELANCEY. You can't see Amy Irving and the Pickle Man until you've seen GWTW, P&P, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48 -
