And you can enjoy champagne and (plain) potato chips on that beach. And you won't have to watch Kate TWICE prance around imitating girls who sashay and flirt to get their man. ONCE would have been enough, but like everything else in THE RAINMAKER, it hits you over the head with "sensitive" significance.

Ford at Fox... and RKO, and MGM, and WB, and Columbia...

Oh, that's the Ford film...at first I thought you meant ADAM HAD FOUR SONS, then I remembered this thread....I am your liebe Bronxie. That's THE MEPHISTO WALTZ , where Jacqueline and Curt have a very, um, interesting relationship. Alan is the recipient, let us say, of Jergen's obsession with immortality. A very 70's film, meaning it's tacky and creepy at the same time. "Shalimar" is the secret woid. Wayne Rogers was the cute curly-haired friend of Alan in M.A.S.H. I have a friend who still shudders at the mention of Loretta Swit, LOL. -
What happened to all the horror, Sci-Fi and mystery movies?

Less THE AFRICAN QUEEN; give us QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE! Less GHANDI, give us GAMERA! Less AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, give us CATMAN OF PARIS! Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48 -
Probably every movie Wendell was in.

I prefer 30's and 40's Kate too, but I really like her in SUMMERTIME. And she triumphs in the 60's for me with LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT and THE LION IN WINTER. You didn't see THE RAINMAKER? I banish you to a socialist country, LOL. Seriously, though, you can wait on this movie. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

I've got some lasagna left, want some? Here, I'll push it through the computer....(I made a helleva lot) Wait....here comes the garlic-pesto bread too....Got it? Good. Save it for dinner romorrow. Unfortunately my girlfriend and I ate up the whole chocolate cake. (I'm lonely without Duane) Nothing wicked in NYC except the real estate. Yes, it's twue, er, I mean, it's true, I am a STAR, the greatest STAR....everyone has to wear sunglasses lol. I'm a smart woman; I always guess the final answer in Jeopardy. Oh, that's not what you meant. I don't really know what a smart woman is vis a vis men. If one is too suspicious and untrusting, it's almost a self-fulfilling prophecy that Mr. Wrong will come along, as much as if one is too trusting. This naturally applies to all human beans. THE LAST SUNSET isn't campy or bizarre as JOHNNY GUITAR. So maybe you won't be interested. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

Oh yeah, now that you mention it, I DID see the '59 IMITATION OF LIFE but I forgot for the moment that he was in it. Almost as soon as Lana enters his office and tries to bluff her way into an acting job, he offers her a ticket to stardom. (with the usual pre-requisites) I know exactly what you mean about Alan. I wasn't into M.A.S.H., and never cared for the whole 60's anti-authoritarian film scene. (I hated EASY RIDER, among others) I'm the opposite with Brando; I'm not sure I'd care for him off-screen (I've heard he liked to play with people's minds) but for me he's always the reason to see a film; you never know how he's going to approach a role, and he always takes chances. -

Hi, butterscotch! Thanks for listing those Robert Alda movies. -
Oops, I confused THE CONSPIRATORS, which has another M.G.M. beauty in it, with CONSPIRATOR, which you rightly titled. Just saw THE RAINMAKER (I'll call Mom tomorrow and find out what she thought) again and I'm frankly liking it less....I think it's obvious and corny. The best performance comes from Earl Holliman as the supposedly slow-witted Jimmy. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

Bronxgirl: "Mom, THE RAINMAKER is on tomorrow and you'll enjoy it" Mom: "Who's in it?" Bronxgirl: Katherine Hepburn, Burt Lancaster, Wendell Corey" Mom: "Oh, I don't think I've seen it. What's it about?" Bronxgirl: "Well, Hepburn is a spinster and Wendell Corey is sweet on her, and Lancaster comes into town and shakes everyone up". Mom: "She doesn't marry Wendell Corey, does she? Bronxgirl: "I'm not going to spoil the story for you!" Mom: "With Burt Lancaster around, she's thinking of marrying Wendell Corey? (laughs) Bronxgirl: "Hey, it ain't over till it's over, eh, Mom?" Mom: "Don't be cute".

I KNEW Alan would be nice! I always underrated him as a serious actor until I saw THE SEDUCTION OF JOE TYNAN. The only Robert Alda film I've seen is THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS. -
Oh that's right she did, didn't she (I was trying to forget he knew) A weird western -- you've got the philosophical concepts of Trumbo, the kinkiness of Aldrich, and there's a bit of melodramatic Sirk in there too.

I have no use for s.o.b. men in any way, shape or form. That being said, I'm not looking for Alan Alda in an apron to serve me coffee. He can take the apron off. -

A BLAZING VALENTINE FROM LILI (FOR THE GROWNUPS ONLY)

Picturesque: Burt, Stuart, Rod, Monty, Duane. And a whole host of others. But I have to tell you, my brain is filled to the gills with LASAGNA and my cognitive faculties are a little vague right now. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48 -
I grew up with Hayley but now I think I'm preferring sis. I too didn't want to think about what might or might not have happened after that kiss in THE LAST SUNSET. If characters don't know the truth about their relationship, does it make it "all right"? I'm not sure. (and this was made one year before LOLITA)

And a Happy Valentine's Day to you too Scottie me darlin'! I made my special Bronxgirl Skillet Lasagna and garlic pesto bread, and my girlfriend came over with chocolate cake and wine. We commiserated over lost loves and toasted to better romantic times ahead. Then we went back to her house for more wine, espresso, and watched Stuart Whitman ride his horse. Speaking of pots of coffee, I'm caffeinated to the hilt now. Duane sent me a cappuccino maker all the way from Little Italy in New Yawk. He's so thoughtful. (5 months to the wedding) I can't think of a nicer way for Mimi to spend her last hours than dancing with you, FG. That photo is exactly how Duane looks as he's speaking to me. I'm so intoxicating to him, if I do say so myself. I just may throw out your voodoo doll. I don't think I can stick pins in you anymore. That is, for now. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

I liked Taylor as he aged; he grew into those rugged good looks. That oft-told notion of him being prettier than his leading ladies wasn't true in THE CONSPIRATORS! Hot still of Kate and Burt. Was she even thinking of Spence right then and there??
-
No, Sheba went to that great Metaphor in the Sky, I'm sorry to say.
-
Burt must be lookin' real good in that one!
-
You're welcome, Sandy. However, I'm posting this inside Godzilla's stomach, as he swallowed me up because I did give him that gift from Zales.
-
I also feel that staginess can be appropriate. (it worked in LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT, and Hepburn was magnificent there) There are other examples, of course, but I just had a giant lasagna dinner this evening and it's gone to my brain.
-
Thanks to you I DID see the beginning of MANHUNT when it was on last time. You've been great in giving me advance times for SUNDAY DINNER FOR A SOLDIER but unfortunately my timing has been off for it. I did see it years ago but would really love to catch it again. Burt's good in THE RAINMAKER. Kate's performance takes some getting used to even though she's believable playing spinsters as she's done many times. The entire production is very stagy, but I think overall it works. It's going to be on TCM soon and I'm looking forward to re-accessing it. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

Bronxgirl48 replied to Bronxgirl48's topic in Westerns
I wasn't concerned about the kids watching it but just the TCM Board "standards" -- wasn't quite sure about what could or couldn't be posted along those lines. I'm not really Bette Davis in THE LETTER, lol; i.e., knitting in the morning and carrying on in the evening. Actually, "quaint" is a word that I usually reserve for descriptions of interior design, not people. (I like "picturesque" too)
