  1. "This isn't what I wanted for you, Michael, to sleep all day and bite necks at night". Michael: "We'll get there, Pop, we'll get there...."
  2. sandy, on behalf of my mother and me, LOVE YOUR POST, lol. These two women should get together as they definitely are cut from the same mold. When mom asked me what TBL was about, I told her truthfully that it's very deep but that the Coen Bros. style is not for her. She asked if it had a lot of swearing. I told her it made RAGING BULL sound like MARY POPPINS. Then she didn't ask anything more about it. I want to get a Lebowski t-shirt too, with "The Dude Abides"! I love all the scenes at the bowling alley with Bridges, Goodman, and Buscemi. And Walter's eulogy.
  3. Looking "forward" to it.. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48
  4. I hear NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN is another Coen Bros masterpiece.
  5. I missed SUNDAY again. For 2008 I'm getting a WALL calendar.
  6. Actually, if I had moved back to Chicago, I'd have more need of a vcr, as there's a wealth of attractions in the big city for a single girl. Here in Boca for another year, my professional and social life is not exactly 24/7 the way it was in Shytown, and I'm not near retirement age. The year round heat and humidity of South Florida makes me sluggish. But career opportunities opened up here when I least expected it, albeit on a less than satisfactory part-time basis, so I spend more time in front of the t.v. than I'd like to. I'm already planning to move back up North permanently in 2009. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48
  7. Aww, thank you. And....while you're at it, could you throw in a flat screen t.v. LOL? Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48
  8. That makes sense to me; thanks.
  9. LOL -- I'm so happy you posted these -- I'd been looking on YouTube but couldn't find them! I love how Ralph never thinks to move to swankier digs.when he's spending that money. And Alice is always the Voice of Reason.
  10. I will now appear to you like Beetlejuice! Actually, I haven't gotten around to getting my vcr. I know, I don't know what I'm waiting for.
  11. A masterpiece. My first viewing this evening. I loved it. Jeff Bridges and John Goodman give unforgettable performances.. A dude's gotta do what a dude's gotta do. Especially if his rug's been peed on. I put it on my Greatest American Movies list. Needs to be savored more than once. Who else is a fan, long standing or an instant one, like me? The Folger's coffee can.... "Just because we're bereaved, doesn't mean we're saps!" "I don't roll on Shabbas!" "This aggression will not stand" "Nice marmot, man" Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48
  12. Yes, yes...OMG, I love it, one of the funniest. What a mother-in-law: To Alice: "How much of the food are YOU getting?"
  13. I feel so bad for Ralph -- he's SO CLOSE, yet so far.....A brilliant episode, I love it. Another favorite episode for me is when Ralph gets two tickets to see a popular mystery play on Broadway, and nobody is supposed to reveal the ending to their friends. But then Alice's mother stops by. 'YOU---BLABBERMOUTH!!!!!!" Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48
  14. Oh, so Hawks was sweet on Dru....didn't know that. I couldn't tell if Julie London's humiliation in MAN OF THE WEST was supposed to be titillating as well as disturbing. Mann has a lot of sadism in his noirs too, from the little I've seen. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48
  15. LOL. Somehow I can't quite picture the old world Lugosi in the movie theatre watching a Brando film; Marlon in his undershirt talking about the Napoleonic Code, and the Count intoning, "Ah, vunderful, vunderful".
  16. So I'm surfing the Web last night and am updating some Lugosi information. I came upon this tidbit: According to his son, Bela Jr., his father's favorite actor was Marlon Brando. "I coulda been a contender, instead of a vampire, which is what I am, let's face it." Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48
  17. A lot of people talk about the homosexual subtext (or context) in RED RIVER but does anyone else besides me think that John Ireland as Cherry Valance is very sexy? Even hotter than the Duke or Monty? I like his performance in general; it's my favorite in the film actually. He's low-key, and charismatically furtive. Monty and Duke are terrific, as is Coleen Gray in her brief but memorably moving scene that seems to set up Dunson's psychological M.O. for all his subsequent actions. I have a harder time with Joanne Dru's Tess. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48
  18. I've got to put WINCHESTER 73 on my list.
  19. I didn't know that about ACROSS THE WIDE MISSOURI. I feel there should have been more characterization; maybe that's what Wellman orginally intended? I'd love to see THE TALL MEN and THE FAR COUNTRY. I thought the MacMahon-Crisp relationship was intriguing, but the ending was a bit too pat for me. I have to admit I'm getting a bit queasy about the Mann sadism. Is it in every one of his movies?
  20. Sorry; take a little seltzer, you'll feel better. A Tom Collins works well too. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48
  21. Nothing like Lovecraft and American-Chinese food.
  22. Yes, that scene is very significant. The three actresses give magnificent performances. Ingrid Thulin I can't get out of my mind. I was almost reacting like Marnie to the red.
  23. HAHAHAHAHA -- a great episode. She certainly is in fine voice. "The whole house has gone crazy!" Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48
  24. I liked ACROSS THE WIDE MISSOURI. It has the most breathtakingly beautiful scenery I've ever seen in a western. Gable relies too much on his King of Hollywood smile, and has only one brief but effective dramatic moment, when he's telling his Indian bride how much he's come to care for her. Adolph Menjou seems thoroughly to enjoy himself as a French-Canadian trapper. He of course is not his typical sartorically resplendent self, although his beard seems well-maintained for a mountain man. There is a near-brilliant comic choreography of brawling that John Ford should have emulated. Wellman keeps it short and sweet On the other hand, Clark's foot chase with the Indians is pretty hamhanded, and makes one recall the poetry and excitement of Fonda's similiar scene in DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK. 25. I saw THE MAN FROM LARAMIE on the Western Channel the other night. Loved Stewart in it, and Arthur Kennedy gives his usual fine performance, although I was confused about his character's motivations in the second half. Alex Nicol ("Say please!") is something to see as the spoiled sadistic psycho son. I'd like to see the other Stewart Manns before commenting further on this one. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48
