If you're a Magnani fan, it's definitely a must-see.
-
My knee-jerk reaction would be: "We don't need no stinkin' symbolism".
-
THE MOON AND SIXPENCE -- was that based on a Somerset Maughm short story? Wasn't George Sanders in it? Seems vaguely familiar.
PARMA IS THE NAME OF THE GAME.
-
If I didn't know Cukor was the director, I would have sworn Kazan took charge.
-
Sod Oscar and 31 days of him.
Give me THE GIANT CLAW anytime. And it actually WON AN AWARD! (the Golden Turkey)

Blast it! Can't we share Captain Gregg? All right, I'll take Errol Flynn.....
I love Jacoby. Oily muscle and so creative. Just my type. And Laura's too. (well, until she meets Mark)
-
Jimmy's one of my all-time faves as well. In any film he does, his face is always awash with shifting emotions, and I really love that. He never seems to hold back on feelings.
That's why I like BEND OF THE RIVER. It's picturesque AND it's got the psychological complexity. (unlike, say, ACROSS THE WIDE MISSOURI, which "just" has the gorgeous scenery)

Yeah, Lin McAdam is a kinda goody-goody name. Like Elwood P. Dowd.
I'm convinced that the mark of a true film buff is devotion to Dan Duryea. LOL, the Parma Ham, eh? Might you be referring to Mr. Franciosa??
I LOVE Shelley in LOLITA. She should have won the Oscar for that. Right, Frank?
Oh, here comes THE AMERICANO!! William Castle directs! Abbe Lane and Cugat, and Cesar Romero? In a western with Glenn Ford? Where's Carmen Miranda?. But I'm gonna switch to VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED later, cause it sounds like some shlocky soap opera, SHIP OF FOOLS-type fun.
Glenn is looking for a man named Barbosa.....well, I think I'll have some coffee now, and hope Dan Duryea will let me drink it.

We're watching it together - fun! Soon Waco Johnny Dean will be comin' along. I'm enjoying this the second time around. Haven't seen THE FAR COUNTRY.
I know why Shelley is thinking of marrying that yellow Steve Miller -- she wants a real home and he can offer her a ranch, so she's trying to convince herself she's in love with him.
Ah, here comes Dan!.

Hey, WINCHESTER '73 is playing right now on the Western Channel!
Yeah, I like my Dorothy Malone Sirked, not Disney-fied.
I agree about Fred -- he can play cold and cynical extremely well (THE APARTMENT comes to mind) but he's also pleasant in light comedy; I didn't see TEXAS LADY but he and Claudette did THE EGG AND I, and there was another one where they have kids and go on vacation in the West...but I'm drawing a blank....
Oh, there's Grandpa Walton as Wyatt Earp, and the contest is about to begin!
-
LOL, you and Franciosa -- now understand, I didn't see the whole movie, so for all I know he could turn into an s.o.b. later on, but it's probably so that Anna will go back to the other Tony.
I don't remember THE BLACK ORCHID too well, but I think Quinn is blustery and "full of life" in that one too. I prefer him in more cynical, subtle roles, like his Oscar winning turn in LUST FOR LIFE. "If I had to tell a woman I loved her, it would make my teeth ache".
-
I know what you mean about the ending of AT GUNPOINT, lol.
For me, "mad" and Fred MacMurray just don't go together.
The only non Disney person in this little Frontierland is Dorothy Malone, but here she's relatively reigned in, and that's no fun.
I wanted to see her sashaying around in her petticoats at least. (maybe she did so in the half hour I missed)

Watch out -- John Hodiak is getting restless and will come and get you if you don't visit him soon, lol.
Wendell Corey will be p.o.'d too.
-
Paul Henreid with a whip is almost as incongruous as David Niven with one (going over Sharon Tate) in EYE OF THE DEVIL.
-
I can't hear you -- transmission from Venus is very poor.
-
You know me, Frank! LOVE the portrait of Captain Gregg -- thankee, me hearty!!
(like Gene, I want to live in Gull Cottage with his ghost)
I'm also partial to Robert Fig Newton as Long John Silver.
Arrrr.
-
I didn't see that, darn it.

I'm waiting for my naval hero to show up.

I'm seeing him now more than Donald Crisp; what's up with this?
At one time the only Ferguson film I knew about was ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, where Frank plays Mr. McDougal, proprietor of McDougal's House of Horrors, and nemesis of Lou.
Could it be because I'm watching a lot of the Western Channel? He's in an awful lot of oaters.

So I missed the first half hour of AT GUNPOINT, but the rest looked like a Walt Disney version of HIGH NOON.
-
I'm commissioning Jacoby to paint my portrait as we speak.
-
I love Magnani -- not beautiful, but look at the hunky Hollywood leading men she played opposite -- Brando, Lancaster, Quinn -- you could believe their characters all lusted after her.

Did you catch DESERT FURY?
-
It's ironic to me that the direction is so stylized and formal, the emotions are anything BUT structured; it's all about falling and letting go and the fear of letting go and imbalance and power shifts in relationships....a wealth of material to plumb for the film buff.
I also want Laura's apartment. And I'll take a fawning maid, like Bessie.
