I missed SUNDAY again.
For 2008 I'm getting a WALL calendar.

Actually, if I had moved back to Chicago, I'd have more need of a vcr, as there's a wealth of attractions in the big city for a single girl. Here in Boca for another year, my professional and social life is not exactly 24/7 the way it was in Shytown, and I'm not near retirement age. The year round heat and humidity of South Florida makes me sluggish. But career opportunities opened up here when I least expected it, albeit on a less than satisfactory part-time basis, so I spend more time in front of the t.v. than I'd like to.
I'm already planning to move back up North permanently in 2009.

Aww, thank you.
And....while you're at it, could you throw in a flat screen t.v. LOL?

That makes sense to me; thanks.

THE EDDY DUCHIN STORY would have been perfect to run on New Year's Day.
Out of your list I've only seen WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION, so I have a lot of Power catching up to do.

I'll make a note of UNFAITHFUL.
The Spanish dubbing didn't flatter Suzanne (I do love her unique voice) at all, but I thought it did wonders for Troy. Made his beach-boy persona seem positively cosmopolitan!
Don Taylor is also appealing to me (with his leather flying jacket) in STALAG 17. The Duke in the early thirties was kinda sweet and boyish. I like Richard Greene, too. Richard Carlson first came to my attention in HOLD THAT GHOST. Jeffrey Lynn, yes. I can't get Wayne Morris in my mind's eye. Audie Murphy was a cutie pie. And Dewey Martin.

Invaluable link, Fred. I didn't see "Queen of the Nile" or "Jess-Belle" there, but so what, they've got so many great ones.
More favorites of mine are "The Odyssey of Flight 33", "The Last Rites of Jeff Myrtlebank", "Midnight Sun" (really scary), "Will The Real Martian Please Stand Up", "The Chaser" (I like George Grizzard), "Nick of Time", and --- "Uncle Simon".
"Barbara, WHERE IS MY HOT CHOCOLATE???"

"Walking Distance" is almost too painful for me to watch. "Only one summer to a customer".
But of course I will.
I also love "The Howling Man".
-
I always thought that NIGHTMARE ALLEY was Ty's favorite, since he had such a proprietary hand in its getting made and it was such a powerful part. But it would be nice to think that he really appreciated the charms of a romantic time travel story.
-
I'm there!
Hope they play one of my favorites (with Ann Blyth) "Queen of the Nile".
"Jess-Belle" is worth seeing for Anne Francis and Jeanette Nolan.

LOL -- I'm so happy you posted these -- I'd been looking on YouTube but couldn't find them!
I love how Ralph never thinks to move to swankier digs.when he's spending that money.
And Alice is always the Voice of Reason.
-
I will now appear to you like Beetlejuice!
Actually, I haven't gotten around to getting my vcr. I know, I don't know what I'm waiting for.

A masterpiece.
My first viewing this evening. I loved it.
Jeff Bridges and John Goodman give unforgettable performances..
A dude's gotta do what a dude's gotta do. Especially if his rug's been peed on.
I put it on my Greatest American Movies list.
Needs to be savored more than once.
Who else is a fan, long standing or an instant one, like me?
The Folger's coffee can....
"Just because we're bereaved, doesn't mean we're saps!"
"I don't roll on Shabbas!"
"This aggression will not stand"
"Nice marmot, man"

Yes, yes...OMG, I love it, one of the funniest.
What a mother-in-law: To Alice: "How much of the food are YOU getting?"
-
When I first saw THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, I too admired Richard Carlson in a bathing suit. (unlike Andy Devine in ISLAND IN THE SKY) Who knew?
Yes, Esther and the Gillman: didn't they make a musical out of that? NEPTUNE'S MONSTER?
Julie Adams is a very classy looking actress. Like Barbara Rush. Who I think was in a sci-fi movie with Richard Sexy Trunks Carlson. I haven't seen MISSISSIPPI GAMBLER. I like Power.
(btw, I wish TCM would play that little-seen reincarnation fantasy romance with him and Ann Blyth; what is it called, I'LL NEVER FORGET YOU? But it's Fox of course. Maybe FMC will run it. Only saw it once years ago. Tyrone is an 18th century scientist who travels to the future)
Water is good for us, so enjoy!!

Sounds like a good thread-in-waiting.

I feel so bad for Ralph -- he's SO CLOSE, yet so far.....A brilliant episode, I love it.
Another favorite episode for me is when Ralph gets two tickets to see a popular mystery play on Broadway, and nobody is supposed to reveal the ending to their friends.
But then Alice's mother stops by.
'YOU---BLABBERMOUTH!!!!!!"

Oh, so Hawks was sweet on Dru....didn't know that.
I couldn't tell if Julie London's humiliation in MAN OF THE WEST was supposed to be titillating as well as disturbing.
Mann has a lot of sadism in his noirs too, from the little I've seen.

LOL.
Somehow I can't quite picture the old world Lugosi in the movie theatre watching a Brando film; Marlon in his undershirt talking about the Napoleonic Code, and the Count intoning, "Ah, vunderful, vunderful".

Ah, Bellinis! Love them!!!
I also drool over Diane Lane's Italian lover in UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN. Mama mia.
Actually, this cybermessage isn't from Duane; he always phones me because he thinks it's more personal; the phone will ring and I'll hear his smack-smack kisses. It can't be Troy because I don't hear any water whooshing around and that Creature signature melody, the one that screeches: Dah-dah-DAH!!!
Maybe it's Emilio Pericoli.
Can you hear my breathing quicken.
Duane lets me have my little fantasies. I can dream about hot Italians, but when you come right down to it, I'll take one loyal plain looking motor pool private over any wild Latin stallion.
I think.

Interesting speculation about Murray. I thought he was very good in THE CROWD. Hopefully someone knows the answer.
I tend to agree with you about the "modernity" of early thirties pre-codes. All the so-called taboo subjects were alive and well back from the beginning of time; there's nothing new under the sun.
Attitudes change but human nature, for better or worse, remains the same.

So I'm surfing the Web last night and am updating some Lugosi information. I came upon this tidbit:
According to his son, Bela Jr., his father's favorite actor was Marlon Brando.
"I coulda been a contender, instead of a vampire, which is what I am, let's face it."

A lot of people talk about the homosexual subtext (or context) in RED RIVER but does anyone else besides me think that John Ireland as Cherry Valance is very sexy? Even hotter than the Duke or Monty? I like his performance in general; it's my favorite in the film actually. He's low-key, and charismatically furtive. Monty and Duke are terrific, as is Coleen Gray in her brief but memorably moving scene that seems to set up Dunson's psychological M.O. for all his subsequent actions.
I have a harder time with Joanne Dru's Tess.
