I've always thought Michael Landon was a little scary.
-
Tor Johnson -- the Swedish Ralph Richardson.
(notice I didn't say "Olivier" because frankly I think he's overrated)

Yeah, that Mama song, lol. Maybe Norman Bates should play that on Mother's Day.

Re-seeing this after many, many years, and with a more seasoned and critical eye, I'm just astonished at it's brilliance -- yes, brilliance -- Preminger's effortless, dispassionate, seamless direction, with that masterful alternation between the bittersweet melancholic black and white present of Seberg's Paris nights, contrasted with the color drenched flashbacks of sunlit days on the French Riviera, keeps the "modernity" of Sagan's story really modern in this day and age. It seems to presage New Wave cinema, with its philosophical concerns about alienation, modes of living, relationships, etc.
Behind the carefree, hedonistic existence of Seberg (excellent) and Niven I really felt a sort of desperation by them, tinges of regret and emptiness even before the chain of events that lead to tragedy -- they both seemed very self-aware of their live-for-today lifestyle. I didn't necessarily cheer Jean on in her attempts to destroy Deborah but at the same time I thought Kerr's character was a real killjoy! Yes, she offers stability and she can see through the hollowness and superficiality of the jet set crowd, but there was something really unlikeable about her, overly moralistic. So we're back to: how do human beings live a good life?
This movie is terribly underrated, when it should be regarded as one of Preminger's best.
It's quite ahead of its time.

As Walter Neff says to Barton Keyes in DOUBLE INDEMNITY: "I love you too".
I can even deal with below freezing weather if there's a fireplace nearby like the one "35" year old Dick Powell has in SUSAN SLEPT HERE.

Does Tony have his moustache? Didn't it go everywhere with him?
I haven't seen this.

I'd like to see ATONEMENT Is that the British one with Vanessa Redgrave?
I loved that black dress in ROBERTA. So contemporary is right! It looked better on the model than on Claire Dodd, though. Don't remember that Pretty Woman dress at the Oscars, though.
Edith Head....well, we'll never see her like again.

I always think the cold weather, not just the rest of the changing seasons, is romantic. I'd always opt for the cabin in the Adirondocks over a Hawaiian cruise if I ever was on my honeymoon. (and, according to Mom, I never will be, but, that's another story....)
Speaking of Mrs.Bronxgirl's Mother, she would love to go anywhere in the world with you but understand that her hair coloring comes along for the ride.
And you must also put up with this, as in last night:
Mom on phone to me: "Is Alice Faye dead?"
Me: WHAT??? Didn't I give you that list with the movie stars who died? What did I do with that?"
Mom: "What list?"
Me: "GOOD NIGHT NOW!"

BONJOUR TRISTESSE is even better than I remembered.
FARGO is on Flix right now, ah! So I'm getting my cold and snow fix. Ya, you betcha!
-
And I love those Moon Over Miami eggs that Charlotte Greenwood makes.
-
I'm looking forward to BONJOUR, TRISTESSE in 15 minutes!

Ah, MoMa and all the great New York cultural venues.....
Manhattan is where my film education began.

A great Florida movie (particularly for horror film buffs) is MATINEE.
Wonderfully nostalgic, great "duck and cover" atmosphere.
Not to mention MANT! Half Man! Half Ant! All Terror! (the sci-fi spoof within the story)

Ah, you do understand, merci!
But I have to tell you guys, when I was visiting Iowa several years ago in the month of MARCH, (make note of that, lol) WHERE THE BOYS ARE was playing on the Iowa City cable channel,
and it instantly made me nostalgic for early 60's Florida when I used to visit with my family, and then I somehow couldn't WAIT to get back to Boca..
Go figure.

Give that one to Crow!
Nobody can eviscerate a bad movie like the MST3K gang.

Excellent and eloquent summary, Miss G.
I can't wait to see it.
Do you live near Lincoln Center? You lucky girl, you!
btw, I did see THE IRON HORSE (I made some comments on that thread)

I'm trying to mercifully blot Mary's performance (including the singing) out of my mind.
Jan Duggan as Cleopatra Pepperday in THE OLD FASHIONED WAY is still the master.

I always enjoy Richard Dix, and STINGAREE was no exception. I loved Irene's singing and the songs, though it did seem like this strange western romantic musical comedy would be better suited to Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald. Pretty thin, but interesting "Australian" period atmosphere, and Dunne is charming as always.
However, I wanted to stuff those pompoms and tassels down Mary Boland's throat.
ROBERTA was lovely. The scene with Helen Westley on the couch as Irene is singing, and the light is dimming, is beautiful and touching. Satisfying contrasts of sweet, genteel Irene singing, alternating with the snappy energy of the Astaire-Rogers numbers.
And I've seen versions of that great black dress in today's fashion magazines. (the others didn't look quite so timeless)

I know, chacon a son gout, but still --- I get a bit discombobulated (after seven years) of living down here during the autumn and early winter months.
Now Mom LOVES LOVES LOVES it in Florida. Her favorite expression: "It's always so GREEN! And the sun is ALWAYS shining!" Me: "But, Mom, do you really enjoy 365 days of sunshine? Don't you want some variety, some moody atmospheric overcast days, some mist?"
Mom: "NO! That's depressing!" Whenever it's cloudy, she calls me up and says, "This is your kind of weather, isn't it?"

So tomorrow you will no longer be a GWTW virgin? Congrats!!! Smoke a cigarette for me!
Sweet Melanie's the girl for you. (or maybe Belle Watling)
Remember now, CROSSING DELANCEY is a real New Yawk goil's chick flick, very ethnic and geographically specific. (and bubbe's apartment is so familiar to me) Kinda dated -- the women all wear the sneakers to work, etc. (I did all that back in the day) But it connects me to my roots.
Wonder what you'll think of the hot dog stand, Sylvia Miles, and the quiet beauty of Amy Irving.

Agree about Hale, but I thought Keyes was really miscast as "Julie Benson" (aka Ruby Keeler)
I don't know the circumstances surrounding Parks during that time, but he certainly could have gone farther in his career had he been given the chance.
-
Yeah, she was effective in THE GREAT FLAMARION.
I haven't seen INNER SANCTUM.
Mary Beth always reminds me of Lana Turner's vixen little sister.
-
LOL --- you know Forry's style alright!

Thanks, TCM, for Turning Up the Heat!
