  1. I did. Pre-code with a vengeance -- "What are your intentions towards that chicken? Honorable, I hope". Like Sadie Thompson Meets Pabst, or something. My first Dorothy Mackaill. Reminded me a tad in looks of Marion Davies.

    "Newcastle!" Loved Nina Mae.

"The centipedes are really thick this time of year in the hills"

Wellman employs some interesting camera work -- Wild Bill as an Expressionist, almost! (although whenever square Donald Cook shows up, the outre, cynical European stylizations swing back to American Puritan moralism. (Yes, he does help her escape to that rotted isle, but he represents Spiritual Redemption)

The oppressive, nightmarish, sweaty hotel gave me claustrophobia -- exactly what we were supposed to feel. And that seedy, repulsive collection of lust-filled criminals would have been perfect fodder for Lugosi as Murder Legendre in WHITE ZOMBIE to dispose of and add to his motley crew.of undead servants.

    Quite a trip, this.

  2. The Scene: Last night, in a hallway, at the community high school where I tutor.

The Cast: Me and a Brazilian student I'm talking to during break time.

What took place: A black cat comes waltzing in out of the street (the school has it's doors open, the palm trees are swaying; it's all very laid-back) and starts meowing loudly. It comes within a few inches of us, stares intently at me, and then runs away.

This could be the cat that guy was talking about near my complex. The school is nearby.

    "I have no peace".

  3. Actually, while I admire GWTW from a storytelling and acting standpoint, I'm not really a swooning devotee in the romantic sense, and I'm more interested in the Revolutionary War than the Civil. For me, a great romance is DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK, and I'll take Claudette Colbert's Lana over Katie Scarlett, and Gil over Butler. I'm more a fan of small-scale than larger-than-life. I'm not crazy about MY MAN GODFREY, despite the two great stars.

No, you shouldn't be watching chick flicks alone! I'll call Diane and give her what-for because she stood you up; the nerve of that goil! The two of you should rent CROSSING DELANCY.

I DID go on record re: Lifetime, that's right. Sorry for the redundancy but I'm passonate about loathing that garbage. Give me "Calling Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard" any time.

My mother adores LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING. When it came on a few days ago, she called me up and said she was not going to color her hair that evening, just so she could watch it.

Me: "You really love Jennifer and Bill, don't you?"

Mom: "Oh, I love her, and William Holden is so good looking"

Me: "You'd love to bundle with him, wouldn't you?"

Mom: "What? Oh, I'm past that stage...."

Me: "Past that stage? What are you, dead? It's not over till it's over."

Mom: "Oh, don't be silly. I had boyfriends in my day".

    Me: "A lot?"

Mom: "Thats for me to know and you to find out."

  4. This is an excellent Ford film, beautiful to look at despite the grim subject matter, and with a very fine performance by Warner Baxter, who in the later typhoid scenes, uses his impatient "Julian Marsh" manner to great effect. I think I prefer the subtle Carradine in Ford's STAGECOACH and DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK.

  5. Re: the U.N. building: LOL. Unfortunately, how true....

Yeah, John Emery had a patent on those roles.

Wasn't Robert Shayne in THE NEANDERTHAL MAN? Gee, I'd like to see that again. (don't remember much of it)

  6. scsu, thanks so much for TARGET EARTH with my Richard! I've never seen it (you could just barely tell it was sci-fi from that trailer, lol) And I didn't know lovely Virginia Grey was in it (she gets it in the belly, eh? How awful) Denning and Grey are class acts.

  7. All I remember are three -- The Bagel on Broadway, and those two Greek style delis -- one is on the corner not far from the Belmont branch library; the other is near Walgreens and has outdoor seating that's very popular on the weekends, but it's not The North Coast Cafe. (it's near that movie theatre) Obviously my brain isn't working.
