I have to agree with you about authenticity. That's my benchmark too.
I saw TWO RODE TOGETHER for the first time today, and I just loved Jimmy in it -- this now has to be one of my new favorite Stewart characters. (and Linda Cristal complemented him perfectly --more than Richard actually) Wasn't crazy about Ford retreading THE SEARCHERS, but I did enjoy the cinematography. And tried to be patient with all the signature brawling and yelling.
I was disappointed in THE VIOLENT MEN; too preachy, and Edward G. Robinson didn't seem quite at home in the part. Missy tried her best, as did Glenn Ford, but I felt everything was flat and derivative. .
Just saw BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK for the first time: understated, spare, thoughtful, excellent overall. Ryan really good; and I always love Lee Marvin.

I love beefcake westerns!
Give me the Duke, Coop, Roy Rogers, Harry Carey, Sr., Gene Autry, even Gabby Hayes.
And GIVE ME ALAN LADD!!

So for you a western is just like any other movie you are drawn to, but in Monument Valley?
That is, the cowboys, the Indians, the range wars, the historical events, are just backdrops for the psychological and emotional drama? Or are there specific American themes that only the western addresses?
I never was drawn to the classic t.v. shows like GUNSMOKE, HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL, SUGARFOOT, THE RIFLEMAN, etc. even though they really were morality plays dressed up as westerns, and offered serious drama with interesting, very human characters.
But oddly, I am very drawn to Hollywood's vision of the cowboy. I love dusty trails, campfires, ranches, Spin and Marty. I'm not into violence and guns and all that macho stuff. To me, westerns for some reason make me feel like a kid again.
So I'm a bit mixed up.
But you knew that already.

You know, I wondered if Mrs. Leslie and Robert Ryan actually had a physical relationship. It seemed she just played cards with him. She always called him "Mr. Leslie, honey". I get scared just looking at his face, let alone spending the night with him, yikes.. I'm glad you felt the same way about his appearance, I thought I was the only one. I've got to check out ON DANGEROUS GROUND. But he frightened me in ABOUT MRS. LESLIE, actually!
"Oh, woe is me, shame and ginger garlic chicken soup for the fam-il-ee....."
What a toe-tapper. And speaking of that, it just might be Buddy Love when you answer your door.
That Old Black Magic.
I'm glad to hear you're drinking your vitamin C. But it should be fresh o.j. for the best results.
Take two aspirins and call me in the mornng.
I was watching this PBS documentary on the great Mario Lanza last night (with the most nauseatingly vapid female host) and wondered if he ever considered recording a version.

Woof-woof!
You know, Max Cady stars in a New York version of that movie.
It's called CAPE SCHMEAR.

What's the criteria for a good western? FG, you chime in as well, please.

Who are the most overrated, and underrated, western stars?

Actually, "Borscht Belt Humor" might be good as a survival manual: "A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer, down the pants".

Alan Young's performance is one of my all-time favorites.
"He's got all the time in the world...."

I've always wanted my own time machine as well, and like you I still do.

Maybe the Eloi would enjoy some tabloid magazines.
Headline: "I Was Lindsay Lohan's Morlock Lover!"

No, I'm the farthest thing from a vamp.
Just read what famous star I would want to come back as, in that thread.

Why in those old Westerns are the hats so BIG?

I've never seen BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID.
I don't know why, but I have no desire to.
Why?

Is THE OX-BOW INCIDENT considered a real Western?

What do all of you feel about revisionist westerns?
I can't stand watching stuff like THE ELECTRIC HORSEMAN.

I'd put THE SEARCHERS on my list of Great Westerns but I just can't stand all the Ford roughhouse. I realize that's a silly reason not to include a movie that has Homeric themes....

I'd like to see some Bill Hart on Silent Sundays.

I can't be a vampire. Vampires don't have mothers who drive them crazy.
