I used to meet Brodie types in Chicago and the Big Apple.
But there aren't any here in Boca.
Only a lot of Jerry Stillers.
Or else they look like Mark Rydell in THE LONG GOODBYE.

I could never see anyone marrying Steve Cochran and then fooling around with Dana Andrews.
-
Does anyone know if TCM will repeat some of these?
Since I (usually) regard the glass as half full rather than half empty, I was happy to see a smidgeon of THE CASE OF THE VELVET CLAWS (with Warren William asking Della what's a seven letter word for Mongolian lizard!) and then caught about 40 minutes of THE CASE OF THE BLACK CAT. (actually, the kitty was gray and white. It even ad-libbed a meow as it was being taken out of an apartment in its box, and then it seemed to me like Ricardo ad-libbed back, along the lines of "Okay, kitty, here we go") I think I prefer Cortez's low-key charm over William's rather heavy-handed (to me) jocularity.
I'm scouting around now for the best deal on VCRs.

I was very impressed with Debbie's performance. In retrospect a great casting choice. I wish she had done more drama; she certainly had the acting chops.
I'd love to see MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. .

It's a keeper!

It's true -- the Andy Hardy movies were a white-picket fence fantasy for a lot of Americans, but they did have some timeless and important coming-of-age statements to make, amidst all the silly plots and M.G.M. starlets.

Ah, oui, merci for the French title.
On the Indie Channel.
-
You heard ChiO.
DO NOT MISS!
-
Sounds great to me.
Maybe TCM will run it again......in the spring!
-
Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention, otter.
It's a great MARTY follow-up.
Bette is TOTALLY believable as a Bronx housewife, I can tell ya that.
Am I right, everyone?
Debbie gives a fine dramatic performance.
And hubba hubba Rod Taylor, sexy as all get-out with glasses and a New Yawk accent.
Sorry, Duane, a moment of weakness there.....
Barry Fitzgerald is Davis's brother and he's a treat as well.
-
Yeah, it always fascinates me that parents in those movies seem to look more like the grandparents.
Although I understand Stone went prematurely gray....

I've always liked Lionel too. He might have played the Judge in a less taciturn, more"colorful" way than the reserved Stone, although I like the contrast between the latter and the exuberance of Mickey as Andy.
Two great "hams" (I mean that in a GOOD way) like Barrymore and Rooney might have been a delicious combination.
Oh, well, we'll never know....

ken, I am so with you on AN INSPECTOR CALLS.
-
Interesting speculation.
-
****?
I thought this was terrible. Heavy-handed satire, virtually unwatchable, but I stayed with it, hating every minute.
Pretentious crap imo.
The French characters constantly refer to the Americans as "dirty".
Grrrrrr.

I'll have to tell my Duane that Mann is not my man, or we'll devolve into an A&C routine.
Thank you for your seasoned comments, I think I've got some good stuff to look forward to. I'll make a note of MAN OF THE WEST.
Wouldn't mind seeing more of Brodie, in films or t.v.
-
Thank you so much, Miss G., for that.
I'll tell my mother about MARGIE, and hope maybe Fox will run it!
-
You're right -- it also reminded me of those reunion t.v. movies. Real downers.
I want to remember Andy as no more than about 20 years old, and I always want to see Lewis Stone in his den. (and not just a portrait; although that was a (sob!) nice tribute to him and the character he so memorably portrayed)

I was watching almost all of them, but missed the first installment, and also SPRING FEVER, darn it.
-
So did Virginia Mayo's, lol, much to the chagrin of Dana Andrews.
-
I've never seen MARGIE, but I'm a Jeanne Crain fan, and the movie sounds really charming.
Thanks for those thoughts, but I'm already feeling guilty for parading my mother around on the threads. I need to get back to my movie reviewing and be less whimsical, if that's even the right adjective for my self-indulgence.
It's just that Mom and I DO talk a lot about movies, so at least I feel somewhat o.k. that's it's all in the movie "family".
-
I think maybe the only person who could be our agent would be Woody Allen as Broadway Danny Rose. I can see him telling my mother: "My hand to God -- pretty soon you're gonna be doing your act for the Queen of England!"
In my dreams. I'd love to go to Balmoral.
I missed the first ten minutes of GREEN FOR DANGER, darn it. I'm a big Alastair Sim fan; droll is the right word for this wonderful actor.
I did partially remember who the murderer was, though, which I guess "made up" for the first ten minutes, although in a murder mystery one doesn't want to miss a second.
Now I'm hoping TCM will run AN INSPECTOR CALLS, also with Sim, as a very unique detective.
(I won't give it away)

LOL, loved your great feedback, rr! I wasn't able to see HE WALKED BY NIGHT, which came on before DESPERATE.
I didn't know he also did those s&s movies. I'll have to check them out too!
I'm also new to Steve Brodie. Good, potato-faced, Everyman quality. (not that every man is a potato face, but you get the idea)

Hershey -- The Great American Chocolate Bar! My late father used to bring home scads of Hershey; those were the milk chocolate days when no one really knew about the "fancier" dark.
Holidays are tough going for the bereaved, like your grandma and my mom. Thanks so much for your sympathies, and I give my own to you. Mom is like your grandmother: strong women who keep it all together in the face of adversity, for the sake of the family.
Your house-parents story sounds like it would have made a nice little Warner's movie in the late 30's. Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall, and Bobby Jordan could be a few of the "boys".
I'm all the sweets Duane will ever want.
(but if I do say so myself, I make some good hearty stuff, like beef stroganoff; chicken paprikash, Barb's Special Baked Beans (you have to send away for the recipe; send me $5,000 and I'll mail it to you) and other cholesterol-laden delights.
