Hope everyone's having lots of popcorn and pretzels and beer during these lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. Unfortunately, the crazy part is still foremost and this is really just a flimsy attempt to coax Barb into saying Hey, since this is the last congenial gathering spot on the TCM landscape. My state was an early one so we're doing OK right now, but Florida and some other states aren't and I'm a worrier, so what's up? I'm convinced that this is do-able, but we've all got to pay lots of attention and look out for each other. So, Barb, please be a good little Thomasina and put paw to keypad, if only for a quick "Meow". We could suspend the rules of comedy by royal proclamation so there'd be no pressure. I can think of valid reasons why you might not want to, but it would be reassuring to your not-cyber-only friends.  🙂

    Meow!

Thank you, Dougie!  I'm still here for what it's worth....feeling a bit down in the dumps lately, you'll understand why since we in Florida have a cretin for governor....(plus he doesn't even know how to put on a mask, much less mandate them across the board for our state)  Insanity rules!

I'll be back tomorrow in (I hope) a jollier mood.  Bear with me, guys.

I did not bake these but I feel they would be a festive little touch at present:

Aww....they look so sad.  But adorable!

SansFin, I don't think I've seen any of those movies!  Impressive list.  I'll bet many of them can be found on YouTube, which would be a good thing since TCM will probably feel pressure not to air the "Oriental" detectives like Charlie Chan, Mr. Wong and Mr. Moto.   I feel bad about this but will say no more....

  3. I laughed out loud when Eddie said "I can't be sure if Tierney was a contributing factor, but after this film Priscilla Lane retired from acting"

Apart from the kinky pleasures of seeing kick-**** Larry on the silver screen, plus the always youthful Priscilla in what might be described as her signature persona of the supportive and charming girlfriend/sidekick (She had a cute Nancy Drew-ish vibe here), I have to agree with mr6666 -- I thought BODYGUARD, although tautly directed and moderately entertaining, was nevertheless fairly routine.

  4. THE SIGN OF THE RAM has always been one of my guilty pleasures.  I mean, pipe the character names -- Leah, Mallory, Sherida, Logan.   So deliciously arch and corny.   Susan Peters' matriarch did not fool me for one minute -- practically had "Evil Manipulator" emblazoned on her fivehead.   Peggy Ann Garner's young Christine -- hoo-hah!

  5. Almost had me going there, Dargo, lol.   I was (really!) breathless with anticipation until the second paragraph.

Just tell me how much the Whitestone Bridge is going for these days and I'll write you out a check.

  6. Mama Mia, Walter Slezak in 1925!!  I always thought he was born looking like a middle-aged, overweight Viennese waiter.  (along the lines of S. Z. Sakall -- hey, can anyone find a sexy photo of "Cuddles" in his Hungarian youth?)

While I appreciate Dick Powell's  hard-boiled, noir persona changeover in the mid-Forties, I have to say (small voice, lol) that I really enjoy him more in cute n' clever stuff like YOU NEVER CAN TELL and SUSAN SLEPT HERE.

James Shigeta: handsome, sweet, gentle strength, lovely soft voice. What's not to like?

SPOILER ALERT??:  Eddie's intro gives away what was actually a plot twist for me. I knew nothing about the film when I saw it the first time a few years ago, and about an hour in I was thinking, "Well, if it were me, I'd dump Glenn Corbett for that dreamy James Shigeta," and then that was exactly where the movie went.

And TCM is running FLOWER DRUM SONG this Wednesday!

As soon as James sat down at the piano and started playing that beautiful Japanese melody, I think that's when Victoria really began to "appreciate"  him.   God knows I would.

  8. James Shigeta....(sigh)   Have had a crush on him ever since FLOWER DRUM SONG.  You can keep Errol Flynn, Tyrone Power, et. al.  Give me some Jimmie!!!  In my opinion, one of the handsomest men in all moviedom.

Just finished watching THE CRIMSON KIMONO.   Eh, not too impressed with this movie but re: my above sentence, who cares, lol??

Ugh, BETSY DRAKE is THE WORST!

I know, right?   No wonder I kept falling asleep!

But guess what?  I found out THE SECOND WOMAN was on YouTube.  Curiosity (and an **** personality) had me watching to the bitter end.  (I also armed myself beforehand with a large cup of strong coffee)  They say patience is a virtue and this quality is definitely needed here.   Story combines elements of REBECCA, with some GASLIGHT thrown in for good measure.   The pleasant, soothing, vanilla flavor of Robert Young works well in certain roles -- I'm thinking of CLAUDIA in particular -- but here he's just uninvolvingly bland.   Even a so-called twist ending doesn't help.

  10. I love salami.....

    But never mind about that.

I was trying to get through something called THE SECOND WOMAN (never heard of it before) which unceremoniously popped up on one of my local public broadcasting channels here in Boca.   It's the third airing this week and I've fallen asleep halfway through each time.    I mean, Robert Young and Betsy Drake -- scintillating!

  11. I've always liked FALLEN ANGEL -- in fact, it's one of my favorite Preminger movies, but wish like hell all of Faye's scenes were kept intact.  Hate Zanuck for that sabotage.   (and I say this as a Linda Darnell fan.  One of the screen's great beauties who could also act).

Fallen Angel tonight, if I remember right it has the old style roads signs as credits. Here's another diner/lunch counter scene where people invariably order a hamburger and a cup of joe,  rather than a Coke.

Or ham and eggs.  In every movie made after 1930 but before 1950 it seems.
