"Black Magic" is a really fun movie, and as you can tell from the title, "TOAG" will not disappoint either with visions of double craniums in a basket dancing in one's head.

Thanks for the 13th admonitions, Bronxgirl!

    You're welcome, CaveGirl!

I was really looking forward to BLACK MAGIC but unfortunately fell asleep about a half hour in -- not because of the movie.  I was just tired from a plethora of morning errands.  Drat!

I saw TWO ON A GUILLOTINE for the first time a year or so ago and really enjoyed the copycat William Castle charm, so couldn't resist it again the other day.  I just love that Max Steiner gives the rabbit his/her own theme song!  This time around I caught director Bill Conrad doing a "Hitchcock" cameo at the amusement park.

Maybe you should start a thread for people with insomnia, and we could all submit titles of the most boring movies imagineable, to help you sleep, Hibi?

I will start..."Brother Sun, Sister Moon"? That or possibly "Paint Your Wagon" which should put you to sleep the moment Lee Marvin starts singing.

I'm going to say this in a very small voice, but -- VERTIGO.

    Yes.

The minute Jimmy gets in his car and starts tailing "Madeline", I invariably drift off into the arms of Morpheus.

Sorry to derail the thread with insomnia.

You haven't!  Yes, please keep us updated.

I'm getting ready for BLACK MAGIC and TWO ON A GUILLOTINE this afternoon.

    Happy Friday the 13th, everyone!

No, its nothing like that. When I was younger I could sleep through anything. Just started as I got older. Hopefully the doctor will ok Ambien. Melatonin or any of that crap doesnt work for me. Makes me drowsy, but I always wind up waking up during the night....

    Good luck with the Ambien!

Believe me, I get exercise. I garden for hours every day. Walk to and from my car 4 times a day usually during the warm months at work (10 mins each way). I'm always tired, but it doesnt translate into sleep.....

This must be so frustrating for you.

I'm not sure what else to suggest.  Assuming you're in good physical health, perhaps some therapy to get at the root of maybe a childhood trauma or phobia?   Hope I'm not being too personal.

    WHERE'D YOU SEE THAT?

Imdb does not list THE PHANTOM CREEPS among Cobb's credits....maybe he inspired the face of the homely robots and got credit for that?

    (i see a resemblance)

LOL!!!  You're right!!!  And I've seen that specific puss in 12 ANGRY MEN.  "Kids today!  You work and you slave and look how they turn out!"

It's stated in Wiki that he has an uncredited role as "Road Crew Foreman" and that there is "archived footage" whatever that is.

I don't know what the movie is like, but the book has to be one of the most dismal ever written.?

I don't remember the book too well but can tell you that Lee is wonderfully loathsome as the dissolute father.

Ps- I just imdb'd LEE J COBB- he was in GREEN MANSIONS?!?!?!

    i do not recall this...

I was checking his filmography too, and it said he had an unbilled role in a 1939 Bela Lugosi serial, THE PHANTOM CREEPS.  This must have been just before GOLDEN BOY, lol.

    OMG ME TOO!

The first time I saw "the three faces of Eve" I was very impressed by Joanne, but frankly it was the performance of the actor playing her husband that really blew me away. He has what is actually the most challenging role in the picture, and honestly I think he gave the best performance.

ps- as I recall it, Lee J Cobb is pretty calm in "Anna and the king of Siam" with Rex Harrison and Irene Dunne. I think the fact that he was playing another race was enough to sate his hammy tendencies on that one

    Ah, we have great taste!

I had never realized just how versatile David Wayne was -- from the sophisticated "artsy" neighbor in ADAM'S RIB to the twisted title character in the 1951 M to a Bowery bum in O. HENRY'S FULL HOUSE, on and on.  Terrific actor.

Yes!  ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM.  Another "sedate" Cobb role my Baby Boomer brain has played havoc with, lol.  First time I saw it I couldn't quite wrap my mind around Lee in full body make-up.  Although playing another race didn't seem to sate Rex Harrison's hammy tendencies, even though that part did call for a certain bombastic, "royal" performance.

YES. And it just gets worse as I get older. I average maybe 5 hrs of sleep on a good night. Somewhat better in the winter time. I'm going to ask my doctor to put me on Ambien. Nothing helps.

So sorry.  I'm not necessarily against medication but I wonder, as I mentioned previously, if exercise would help.  Not saying to spend intense hours at a gym or anything like that but perhaps just walking an extra mile or two throughout your day so that energy would be expended and then you could crawl into bed at night with the lights out and hopefully zero noise and immediately fall asleep.

    LOL. She tried her best........

I know Joanne won an Oscar but for me David Wayne as her **** husband takes the acting honors in this movie.  "He said you weren't really sick, it's just this multiplyin' thing...."

I wish SOMETHING would put me to sleep!!!

Do you suffer from insomnia?  So sorry if this is the case.

Would exercise throughout the day help?

Or you could just keep QVC on in the background.  24/7 of those hosts and cheesy product presentations would surely knock you out good!

Wouldnt the caffeine keep you up though?

One would think so but a cup of hot cocoa before bed always puts me to sleep in no time, even if I make it with water and not milk.

Probably some of both. He may have some input, but he's not the sole decision maker, as availability would be the greatest factor in what's eventually chosen.

Thanks -- This makes the most sense to me.

He was pretty relaxed (but perplexed) in The 3 Faces of Eve......

You're right!  I forgot about that one.  Eve Black flirted up a storm with Dr. Luther but all he told her was "That won't work, I'm a doctor...."

    you know,

i was going to post that, out of all the movies Eddie has selected, PARTY GIRL was the one time where I really think he ought to have re-evaluated that choice on multiple grounds...

    and yet...

it's sparked one of the livelier and longer lasting discussions we've had here in a while.

    so, shrug emoji?

Serious question here in order to give Eddie the benefit of the doubt and re-evaluate him in my own mind -- I'm now thinking, does he really pick all these movies or is it done by "noir committee" and Muller just given "mouthpiece" status introducing and "reviewing" them?

Lee J Cobb needs some chamomile or sleepy time tea! He needs to calm down.

Can you imagine Cobb hopped up on a Rockstar or something? Yikes.

Is Rockstar the one that's even stronger than Red Bull?  Egad!

On the other hand I thought Cyd and Bob needed energy drinks in this movie.

Taylor's wooden-ness, however, works to good effect in THE NIGHTWALKER.

Ditto JOHNNY EAGER but much less so in THE CONSPIRATORS.

The only films I've seen Lee even remotely relaxed are THE MAN WHO CHEATED HIMSELF and THE EXORCIST.

  18. I've read that drinking cocoa every night not only lowers high blood pressure but keeps one's skin glowing and young!

I would have liked to see Cyd or Bob offer a cup to Lee J. Cobb.  Gangsters need comfort too.

  19. The most unbelievable thing about PARTY GIRL was Cyd offering Bob a cup of cocoa.  And she actually started making it until that unfortunate incident occurred.

I always felt Taylor had a decidedly sinister cast to his face as he aged, much like Ray Milland.

  20. What did everyone think of THE MAN WHO CHEATED HIMSELF?

I noticed that Lee had trouble lighting his cigarettes.

Was that intentional, as in DOUBLE INDEMNITY?

John Dall as Cobb's younger, dogged detective brother....oookaay, lol.  I didn't find him especially believable for any number of reasons.

The proto-VERTIGO San Francisco locations were the best thing about this movie in my opinion.  Otherwise, meh!

  21. Felt a bit more kindly disposed towards Eddie Muller after listening to the segment where he talks about his father, how he thinks about him every day and how grateful he is to be living the life he has now, his voice cracking at the end.
