  1. Masha, I'm sorry to hear you and Capuchin are sick.  Don't forget the weak tea (with lots of sugar) and toast with jelly!

I always remember Peter Capaldi from LOCAL HERO -- one of my favorite movies -- as the goofy Scots kid who is captivated by a young girl who may or may not be an actual mermaid.

Enjoy your back rub!  I'm a massage maven but live alone, so the only way I can "vicariously" get one is watching all the videos on YouTube, lol.  You'd be surprised how relaxed one can get, as if the hands of the therapist are actually reaching out to your own sore spots through cyberspace.

Ro, I know, doesn't that sound like a perfect holiday, lol?  Cheesy Japanese monsters and delicious food -- you can't beat it with a stick!  They've got creatures I never heard of, like Megaguirus, who seems to be a mutant dragonfly or something.  Difficult to keep up with the names.

Perhaps the most ridiculous line that I recently heard in one of these sequels was:  "Do you think Godzilla is headed for Tokyo?"

No, he's on his way to the South of France for some sun and croissants.

  2. Thank you Rich, Larry, Ro and Masha!  Hope your holiday was fabulous and is continuing to be so during this weekend.

I visited Mom yesterday, then my friend and I went out for Chinese food -- we had Peking duck just like the Parkers from A CHRISTMAS STORY, lol.

Right now this weird channel called El Rey (they seem to specialize in low-brow male adolescent movies) is running a Godzilla marathon.  I'm watching GODZILLA: TOKYO S.O.S.  One of my dreams is to be an actress specializing in dubbing Japanese monster films. (I just heard "I don't want to talk to you all here tonight of my son's ambitions, but about Mothra" and "I will miss MechaGodzilla terribly")

I'm cooking a more traditional dinner this evening -- my standard Cornish game hens with orange sauce, stuffing, brussel sprouts (but no bacon this time), and mashed potatoes.  For dessert I've got Rocky Road ice cream and my friend's German Chocolate cake.

  3. Oh, Ma, that is so funny about our different reactions to those Kong scenes, lol.

I almost felt sorry for the big guy having to put up with Naomi's antics, ha!  But one thing we can agree on were those frightening-as-hell natives, oh my gosh they were nightmarish!  Very, very scary, yes.  And that long eerie tree branch or whatever it was used to catapult Ann Darrow over to the sacrifice site -- that was pretty creepy.  I grew weary with all the belabored New York Depression-era "period" atmosphere; talk about trying too hard, meh!

We've been experiencing heavy rain this weekend.  Nothing worse for me than rain in December when all I want is either snow (if I lived up North) or an abundance  of sunshine.  I don't mind a wind-swept, dreary November, however -- there's something romantically gloomy about that month.

Don't ask me why, but I'm craving Whoopie pies.

  4. I just knew you'd have a variety of pies, ro!   I have to say that apple is my favorite, in any incarnation, like a French apple tart, apple dumplings, etc.  The kidling's lattice top specialty (with your cranberry sauce) sounds really delish.  I'm a big fan of sweet and sour too.  I'm increasingly getting tired of pumpkin pie every Thanksgiving, but unfortunately pecan is always too cloying and heavy for me.  Same with sweet potato pie.  I guess I'll stick with apple. Boston cream is good, too.  And I love me some lemon meringue.

Talk about famous monster remakes, I just saw the 2005 Peter Jackson KING KONG.  Hated every CGI minute, lol, but couldn't stop watching because everything was so overcooked and annoyingly "clever".  And if it took that Godzilla forever to appear, you could probably read War & Peace in the time it takes this Kong to finally show up (almost 2 hours, for heaven's sake)  Jackson throws in a whole mess of creatures, including some disgusting bugs.  There are nods to the original -- some of Max Steiner's great 1933 score is utilized in the New York Eighth Wonder of the World sequence. Naomi Watts, however, is not your traditional scream queen, and I found her obnoxious to the max.  Her Ann Darrow is no vulnerable heroine who can't wait to get away from her captor; just the opposite. A ridiculous scene has her and the big guy experiencing a winter interlude in Central Park with the confused Kong spinning around on an ice pond and a gleeful Watts playfully fielding whirling snow.  This must be seen to be believed..  All that's missing is them (literally) bumping into Darryl Hannah and Tom Hanks during the skating scene from SPLASH.  What a foursome that would have been.

You want to know the most bizarre aspect?  I had been watching a PBS Anne of Green Gables holiday marathon today and couldn't help noticing that Naomi Watts especially in certain facial expressions (and minus the red hair) resembled actress Megan Follows who played Anne Shirley.  I almost expected Watts to tell the gorilla that they were "kindred spirits". (and, given the updated p.c.-ish nature of their relationship, it wouldn't have seemed out of the ordinary, lol)

Sorry to hear about your dreary weather.  I hope you get some gently falling picturesque snow that turns your neighborhood into a Currier and Ives landscape!

  5. Thank you, ro, and good holiday week-end, Ma Stone.  With you at the helm I just know your family had a mouthwatering feast!   I'll bet you had some yummy desserts as well.

We're having fine weather here at around 80 degrees -- no I'm not rubbing it in, lol; in fact I wish it was down to about 60 (that's almost chilly for us, ha!)   How's the climate in K.C.?  Any snow?

For Thanksgiving leftovers I'm putting what is left of the Cornish game hens (mostly bones though now frankly, lol) into enchiladas.  I go whole Mexican hog, adding mole sauce (love it) over everything.  So delish.

  6. molo, I'm hoping and praying Mother Molo continues to improve.

Mom has thankfully been feeling relatively o.k. these days, but is always more and more tired. I guess at 94 a person can't be expected to possess boundless energy.  She had a nice Thanksgiving luncheon yesterday at her assisted living dining room.  It was with all the trimmings, and she enjoyed it.  I stopped by then went home and made myself Cornish game hens with orange sauce, brussel sprouts with bacon, and candied sweet potatoes.  I wasn't interested in pie this year for some reason, so just had some Stella D'Oro cookies.
