BRONXGIRL'S MOTHER, HENRY FONDA'S HIRSUTENESS, ETC.

Hello, Sans! Is the spider considered a lucky symbol? Swithin, cheers! Ah, yes, nothing can compare to our Grand Concourse! I've always had a fondness for Scotland, even though I hear that Glasgow, for instance, is actually more gritty (like the Bronx, lol) than "romantic". As I was watching RING OF BRIGHT WATER, they showed some rock formations/protuberences in the water that looked an awful lot like they could be mistaken for the humps on the Loch Ness monster. -

Happy holidays everyone! I'm having some problems uploading a few seasonal photos. Please bear with me. Recently reconnected with an old heartthrob of mine, Bill Travers -- who I've always had a soft spot for since WEE GEORDIE -- in RING OF BRIGHT WATER. (sigh) Still in love. And it's such a wonderful movie, especially during this time of year. The Scottish scenery, adorably scampering Mij, and of course, Bill....It's on YouTube! If you haven't seen it since you were a kidlet, or have never had the pleasure, I highly recommend a viewing. -

Ro, I'm sure after all the tryptophan in the turkey, together with mashed potatoes (I just might opt for fries) and gravy, cornbread stuffing, cranberry sauce, soft rolls slathered with dairy-cream butter, a big bowl of chicken noodle soup, and a large portion of rice pudding, I'll be out like a light the minute we get home, lol. I'll tell myself it will be good for my tummy, since there's nothing spicy about this meal. (unlike, say, my favorite pizza with the anchovies, sausage, fresh garlic....) Thanks about SOTH -- but I will be over at Rambles City sooner rather than later. Wow, can't wait to see Beulah in that kind of a role. -

Swithin, thank you! Hey, of course we Bronxites are soulful -- does Brooklyn have Poe's Cottage, lol? Great to hear a good-teen story on the subway -- they were very creative, ha! Thanks for another heads-up on SOTH. I love Beulah! -

Ma Stone!! Hey, I'm always late to my own birthday party, lol. Oh my stars, that is some goooooood food there! Thank you! You know I love my ribs, and I simply ADORE those sweet potato and marshmallow cupcakes! That is a terrific combination, very autumny, just up my alley. I don't know what the yammer pie looks or tastes like, but these cupcakes seem far superior (and creative). Haven't gotten to SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS yet; am shamefully slow but promise I will get to it this week and then do some ramblin'. My best friend and I are taking Mom out for an all-purpose celebration on Saturday. We've decided on Flashback Diner -- nothing fancy -- because I know she'll love their chicken soup, off-the-frame turkey dinner (moi aussi!) and homemade rice pudding. Perfect comfort stuff for all of us, which is what I always crave when this time of year rolls around. -

Scottie my friend, my friend, muchas gracias! You warm my heart. May Amon-Ra, whose anger can shatter the world, protect and keep you! I drink some tanna-leaf tea in your honor. Love, Ananka from the 'hood -

Ro, gracias! I'll bring a carton of Florida grapefruit along with cookies in the shape of alligators. At Gates I'm ordering chili cheese fries, burnt ends, The President's Plate (sounds impressive) and yammer pie! (don't know what it is, but sounds terrific. Could it be a dessert that's so good, you stop talking?) I know you love your cast iron baby, but think about a Provencal or Tuscan-style faux fireplace! Don't worry, my horoscope says I'm going to win Lotto before Christmas so I'll buy it for you. I'm going to watch SOTH over the weekend and will report back!
-
ro, I'm going to check Gates' menu online. Then I'll change my work schedule and meet you in Kansas City, lol. Love your cocker spaniel with the squirrels, ha! I live in a gated community, but the animals just crawl, slither, and in general, er, worm their way in. No I.D. needed. You might remember the alligator who inadvertently rang a doorbell because it smelled bbq and wanted to join the party.... Aloha, Miss G.!! Oh, my gosh, I was watching BLUE HAWAII the other day and thought of you! I looked up SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS -- terrific cast -- I love Harry Sr. too, will definitely check this one out, thanks to you both!

OMG -- All I can say right now is that I'm glad I don't have a dishwasher, because I would be completely freaking out, lol. I can barely WRITE the word s-n-a-k-e, much less think about them in a kitchen appliance! I'm always inadvertently reading or hearing stories of people finding s-n-a-k-e-s in the toilet, or curled up behind pipes, and it's usually in Australia. But the Aussies seem so laid-back about it. I watch these home reno shows and the locals don't seem to be too upset, I guess because they also have to deal with those ugly-arse cane toads. Thankfully I haven't yet come into contact with the you-know-whats, but there are surprisingly a lot of squirrels around my area. Did I tell you about the one that chased me into the elevator? I was going outside with garbage to put in the bin when a little Chip or Dale came scurrying up in front of me with a scary look on its face and so I high-tailed it so to speak back upstairs (I'm on the third floor) Took the bag with me. I'm so ashamed of my wussiness. But I waited until the next day to throw my stuff out, because if I had dumped it later that night, the raccoons would've been waiting for me. The school I work at is located near a canal. That means alligators. There were rumors of one roaming around our parking lot several years ago. We also have buzzards, scads of iguanas, enoles, and other assorted lizards. There is a phantom black cat prowling near my apartment complex. It's a jungle out there, I tell you! Whew, let me get my composure back, lol.....Can I visit KC this weekend and go to Arthur Bryant's with you? I'd finally get a chance to wear a coat and some fashion-forward suede boots. Yes, interesting times ahead with the kidling. Has she read Little Women yet? That's mandatory! You and the family stay safe too -- I worry about all your beautiful trees whenever I hear about heavy storms or tornadoes in the mid-west. I'm in an autumn mood as well. I've never seen SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS. Maybe I'll just watch some old Thriller episodes on YouTube to get in that Halloweeny spirit. And of course "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown". The home shopping channels, however, are really driving me nuts -- Christmas started in July and hasn't stopped. I'm still chasing my warm, sunny, south of France dreams. But for now the closest I can get is BONJOUR TRISTESSE or TO CATCH A THIEF.

Wayne & Wanda put me in the spirit, ha! Your daughter is growing! For some reason I thought she was younger. Such an evocative photo -- beautiful, I can almost see the mist and feel the cold -- ahhhh! We were down to 80 today -- that's our autumn, lol. Our bakeries cannot compare to yours. Plus you've got all that great bbq. I'm going to have to move to KC for the food alone. I'm starting to perk up a bit, thanks. However, we're still in hurricane season until the end of November so my mood is not completely lifted. I'm told a couple of otters were seen frolicking near my building's pond. No alligator sightings, thank heavens. But we've been invaded by mutant snails. Just another day in paradise!
-
So glad you had a wonderful day, ro! Oh my gosh, brownie fudge cheesecake -- you mean you got that at a regular store and not The Cheesecake Factory? I've got to move to your neck of the wooods, lol, definitely better food all around. (pizza, etc.) Your kidlet is definitely a (chocolate) chip off the old block. Oh thank you, I'm coming out of my blah-dom, which had also produced anxiety-based stomach problems. Frankly the weather here doesn't help; I long for a true autumn and temperatures under 80 degrees, which for us would be cool. I would love to spend the winter holidays in Woodstock, Vermont, one of my favorite "up North" places. I lift a bottle of Dr. Pepper in your honor!

October in South Florida. I'm recovering from a long bout of malaise. Our frogs are mating, a couple of rogue alligators have been sighted, and humidity is through the roof. THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES perked me up somewhat this evening. It's my second favorite A&C movie after MEET FRANKENSTEIN. And thanks to discovering MeTV, I can watch Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Thriller, Night Gallery, Perry Mason, That Girl, and The Man From Uncle. Unfortunately lately most of my time outside of work has been sitting like a slug in front of the t.v. watching shopping channels, a/c on full blast. They're trying to convince me to buy cheap-looking sterling necklaces, overpriced candy apples, skin serums from doctors who look like muppets, "liquid knit" clothing, "designer" fashion (shark bite is the new "look" -- please, someone take it away), and tacky watches. I've been moto-jacketed up the wazoo. But come autumn I do miss making a style statement, which is very difficult to do in a subtropical climate. However, I look at the palm trees and imagine I'm in the south of France.... -
Forgive me, ro, I've been under the weather so please accept my belated birthday wishes, fellow Libra! Hope you had lots of cake! And maybe a nip or two, lol? !http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aR-D-ZFgAgY/T2oTEu2YEzI/AAAAAAAACUM/ld9dIS4dqIo/s1600/Yellow+Ribbon+Victor.jpg!

I never saw HAROLD AND MAUDE until just a few years ago on television. I remember how Martin Sheen's character from ROSES enjoyed saying "And I've GOT to make time!" from that song, lol. Now, I don't know if it was at the Paradise, but I saw Danny Kaye in THE FIVE PENNIES somewhere at a Bronx movie house. You understand I was a mere embryo at the time. -

Oh, my gosh, that is so cool! No graduations there myself, darn it. I remember seeing THE HAUNTING and MR. SARDONICUS at the Loew's Paradise. Couldn't sleep for weeks. -
So relieved to see you back, Frank. I spent many sleepless nights thinking you were on the mother ship with the Kanamits getting ready to fatten you up.

Swithin, there's a YouTube video of THE WANDERERS, and I always watch the opening just to catch a glimpse of Alexander's! I lived near the Armory -- also, Tolentine was close by. Wow, we might have even run into each other as kidlets back in the day on the Grand Concourse..... And speaking of France: -

Swithin, I had no idea you're from my neck of the woods -- I honestly thought you were raised in some quaint part of the British Isles! lafitte, this video does bring a tear or two to my eyes (yeah, I was in a nostalgic mood, which I go in and out of periodically) but I sort of wish it had shown the more (for lack of a better word) "genteel" and aesthetically pleasing parts of our neighborhood. Rough and tough was not where we lived. It was a relatively innocent time. Our block had friendly neighbors, peaceful, clean streets, a cozy park, kids not afraid to walk home at night, etc. I was told it did get a bit more gritty in the '70's, but I was long gone, already living out West in San Francisco and later Los Angeles. So my Bronx memories are of an urban paradise free from the social ills that did unfortunately befall other sections of the borough. -
Hi, Rich, thanks! I'm still here, mainly as a big lurker! Can't stay away from your threads; I read them avidly. As for Cesare and Sean, I won't give away any spoilers, lol, except to say that the ending is similiar to the one from QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE. And yep, they're on that comet.
