  1. Ro, thanks for the computer encouragement.  I know I'm far from the only person around town with these problems, so I'll try to keep this in perspective.

Ah, Julia, Julia, Julia, lol.  She's still the best, ha!

    I don't think I could finish a John Wayne.

Lynn, I so appreciate your concern and help.  I'll keep plugging away but hope I won't have to avail myself of your generosity and expertise.

  2. By the way, anyone who wants can check out The Flashback Diner's website.  It's pretty obvious they got the Celebrity Sandwich idea from New York's Stage Deli, only executed with a bit less finesse, lol.

You won't find Mickey's 'wich there, as it is a recent addition we saw listed in the restaurant's menu when we were there.

I never knew Rudy was kosher, lol, but hey, you learn something new every day!

  3. Oh...my...stars...!  Lynn, I'm humbled and grateful beyond belief.   Having decided to roam about the board today after a short absence, I accidentally stumbled upon my own thread here, lol.   I hope I live up to this terrific Forum.  I'll try to keep it more "serious".  For example, I went out to a new "retro" diner/deli with a dear friend this evening, and they had "Celebrity Sandwiches" on the menu -- Mae West  (breast of chicken), Lloyd Bridges (mahi-mahi), several others, with the recent addition of Mickey Rooney.  But he was a salmon fillet and I just didn't see the connection.  My eyes wandered toward the Rudolph Valentino which was described as a "Super Large Hot Dog with chili and cheese". (No, I'm NOT making this up).

obrienmundy, hello!  Oh, thank you so much!  I'm the one who is thrilled that you enjoy my nonsense.  Looking forward to some good film discussions with you and talking about our favorite stars.

Ro, my twin!  Merci!  The coffee cake looks delish!  But then you always bring the most scrumptious looking gifts.

Mom and I are so happy to be at our new home!

    Happy Easter everyone!

  4. lafitte, thanks.  I think those words disappeared after I uploaded the poster.  Still trying to pokily navigate my way around on this brave new board, lol.

Those closing moments of MON ONCLE are very poignant, as your photo with the lace curtains so beautifully illustrates.  I love the way Tati gently (but pointedly) juxtaposes the disorienting gleaming space-age sterility of creeping modernity with the slower-paced, "picturesque" (but not sentimentalized) rhythms/traditions of the village.

  5. I agree with RO -- Vivien was never so beautiful as she was in WATERLOO BRIDGE, and there's also something about the black & white photography that emphasized her character's fragility and fatalism.

I have a hard time accepting Bob as a Scot, but he's lovely too, lol, so I say, who cares?

Btw, watching A MAJORITY OF ONE recently, it was bizarre the way everyone kept referencing him in THE LAW AND JAKE WADE.  Roz:  "You know, I think Robert Taylor is Jewish!"  The "cheeky houseboy": "No, Robert Taylor is Japanese!"  I guess this was supposed to be funny.

    Oy!

  6. Yeah, right -- plopped down in my armchair with a giant mug of Taster's Choice (or, if I'm lucky, a glass of sangria) in one hand and a shovelful of nachos in the other as my eyes are glued to either TCM, Jewelry Television, or HGTV (even though they've gone disastrously downhill...)  It's not a pretty sight, lol.

    Thank you, Chris!!

  7. For instance, if I wanted to display Gene Tierney as Lucy Muir (the scene where she's asleep and the Captain is hovering over her to tell her it was all a dream -- I'm sobbing as I write this, lol) I'd have to write "www.GeneTierney.com" in the address line, or "www.RexHarrison.com" or "www.TheGhostandMrs.Muir.com", all of which of course don't exist.

I'm not going to use Lucy and Capt. Gregg as my avatar, but this is an example of what I mean.  I can't put -- and here's another one I won't use, but just to show you: "fish fountain from MON ONCLE", lol.  I'd have to write: "www.MonOncle.com" or maybe "www.JacquesTati.com".

    Oy!

  8. Hi, Miss G.!  Merci!  Oh my goodness, I never saw that DVD episode, ha!

I've got a big problem uploading anything that doesn't have a "www" proceeding it, which makes finding and putting up a specific avatar darned near impossible right now.  For several weeks on my computer, I get "Problem Loading Page".

  9. Happy St. Patrick's Day, everyone. Here's my sweetheart Dennis: (I couldn't find the clip from MY WILD IRISH ROSE with him singing a beautiful lullaby to (of all people) William Frawley, with hunky George O'Brien (in varying stages of undress in that movie, hubba hubba!) nearby...

John Payne there shouldn't be so upset -- I mean, a few years later he gets the best colleen ever in MIRACLE ON 34th STREET!

SansFin, loved the video! I wasn't able to identify any movie after 1999. And Tom Cruise in sunglasses -- I get confused because in the '80's he seemed to wear them in every one of his films -- RISKY BUSINESS, COCKTAIL (hilariously awful), RAIN MAN, what else? Probably got them on in THE COLOR OF MONEY.

    Lynn, thanks for the list!

  10. >Bronxie! I'm so sorry it took me this long to get back. I didn't even see this reply! My apologies! :D>

Scotchie, no prob! (lol, I sound like that lock-jawed, run-it-up-the-flagpole-and-see-who-salutes-it Mad Ave colleague of Jack Lemmon in THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES)

    >You are never creaky! Only cranky people are creaky. You, girlie, are not not creaky.>

Merci, my poppet! Although I've been known to get cranky when deprived of chocolate cake and jewelry for long periods of time.

    >Vincente Minnelli is one of my top 5 favorite directors, but I could heartily agree with you on Two Weeks in Another Town. "Schlock" perfectly describes it, now that I know what it means. heehee! Even though Douglas was so known for being that tough guy with a hard exterior that noone can ever crack, I don't really see that uumph in his performance with this one, compared to his performances in The Bad and the Beautiful or even Detective Story. I did love Minnelli's style coming slightly out with the glamorous Italian Aristocrats just sparkling in the film. I have heard others comparing the film to a Federico Fellini piece of work and I can see that, but I really like Minnelli's own spin. I also think Edward Robinson and Clair Trevor were brilliant! It's so wicked to say, but I like their spats. They make for interesting entertainment.>

Yes, Eddie and Claire have a wonderful relationship there, lol, just like in KEY LARGO!

I agree about Kirk's general lack of spark in that movie. He seemed to be just going through the motions. I do love Vincente's sense of style in what I've seen of his work -- a sensitive, tasteful, subtle fashionable quality -- more than just skin deep in some respects.

  11. Well HAY-LO there! (followed by a splash into the sulphur pit)

    >The Moon Is Blue is the only time I've seen Maggie, so I really don't have anything to judge her by other than that. She reminded me of Audrey in the film. A manic Audrey, which I liked. I wouldn't say she is just like Audrey. Not at all.>

Yeah, I can see what you mean. What bugs me is Maggie's roles always have her incessantly chattering away, and that just drives me bonkers.

    >I'll have to see what I think of Maggie after watching Three Coins in the Fountain.>

Good luck with it, lol. Maggie never shuts up here either. The only redeeming features in that movie are Jean Peters (one of my favorites, but even she's pretty dull, thanks to the script) Rossano Brazzi, and the Italian scenery. Everything else to me is embarrassing, especially poor Dotty McGuire and Clifton Webb. Talk about a waste of talents...

    > do agree with that. They are very whimsical. It's probably why I liked them so much. I liked how Mrs. Rafferty pretty much proposed to Uncle Jack (Barry Fitzgerald).>

Jack really needed that push, ha! But subconsciously he was ready for major change in his life.

    >That's funny! He and Liz just kill me.>

Love them in WAOVW, especially Burton. His speech patterns are just so brilliant.

  12. >ha! you sound like me and Bronxie about Jimmy Stewart. :D>

Miss G.! So glad you were able to escape to Hawaii!! Was Jack Lord hanging around, being obnoxious?

Funny, I just saw DEAR BRIGITTE on Fox and by golly, it certainly "holds up" re: Jimmy's stroke-screech.

I also caught X, Y, and ZEE. This could be the real Liz, lol.

  13. Masha and Lynn, I'm wiping the spittle off my computer....

I'll take them ALL! (though I lean, I think, toward the more "modern" pieces) This is the one I covet (and it's only $8,500.00! sigh...):

I like the manniquin hand. Reminds me of that Twilight Zone episode with Anne Francis.
