I've never seen DIRTY HARRY; The Retroplex Channel has been playing a bunch of Eastwoods but I haven't seen it on their schedule, or maybe I just missed it. Is Clint capable of talking in a voice above a whisper?
-
Thanks, Miss G., ha! Yes, be very afraid of Florida, lol. No connection between the two stories -- the unfortunate man got eaten up by a sinkhole, and I quote from today's (Saturday) Sun-Sentinel (the title of the article is: "How Sinkholes Kill Without Any Warning"): "The earth opened up and swallowed a man in his home north of Tampa late Thursday in a terrifyingly rare reminder of the unpredictable dangers lurking just below Florida's surface.....all the victim's brother could see was his brother's mattress sticking up out of the center of a large, dark sinkhole threatening to take the entire house into the depths..."
Where is Harry Callahan when you need him? "Go ahead, you filthy sinkholes and alien tree branches -- make my day!"
I haven't seen EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE, but I think I'd rather watch Clint bond with an orangutan instead of a Smith & Wesson, lol.
My alien tree wasn't a tropical palm, just a regular old oak or equivalent, you know, the kind of species you see up North.
I'm glad Spring break is coming soon...

Really, SueSue? Eeek! I don't think I'll be reading that any time soon, lol.
Maybe Sondra's less creepy in THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER.

More horrors.
From our Sun-Sentinel:
"Earth opens up and swallows Florida man sleeping in his home"
Last Wednesday I am walking on the open second floor of the school to get to class and out of the corner of my eye I spot a tree swaying oddly in the wind, with three prominent branches rustling together like they had one mind. They had what I can only describe as...as...PERSONALITY, which makes no sense at all, I know. They...they seemed to be possessed of an alien force, and I am reminded of Algernon Blackwood's story "The Willows", one of the most frightening stories of the supernatural ever written. I drew closer to the tree and felt hypnotized by those three branches. I somehow couldn't look away. When the wind died down they continued to sway in a disturbingly insinuating manner, undulating their green fronds with a sort of snickering disregard for the forces of nature, and daring me to ignore them, but I didn't know what they wanted. The film DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS came hideously into my thoughts. However, I was finally able to escape from the primordial depths of human fear and hurried along to my destination, shaken but determined not to let the students know that anything was off kilter.

Another thing I must confess -- Sondra Locke frightens me. (I recently saw SUDDEN IMPACT)
Her eyes remind me of the unformed black marbles from Katherine Ross's Stepford robot.

I frankly get teary-eyed from that poignant Mazursky tribute I just posted. I never once cried during any of his work.
By the way -- I must get this off my chest. Seeing THE GRADUATE last night after so many years (and I love Mike Nichols; think he's a genius!) I'm wondering about Carl Smith. I just can't believe that a handsome, All-American guy who smokes a pipe and proposes to a girlfriend by telling her "We'd make a great team" could be any sort of a player. To make anti-establishment points, the script makes Carl seem very shallow, when in reality he looked pretty substantial to me. Dull and a square, okay, like Carl Benz in "The Donna Reed Show", but I ask every woman this: Is ****, figitity, indecisive, fake-smiley Dustin Hoffman the answer to a girl's dreams?

Merci, Goddess. But yet this YouTube tribute to Mazursky moves me more than any one of his films ever did: (of course, the song helps)

I do love ENEMIES, A LOVE STORY. Ron Silver as you've never seen him, and Angelica Huston is fabulous.
Oooh, Jackie, let me think about favorite psychology-themed and maybe I can draw up a list!
CHARLEY will definitely not be on it.
-
Jackie, I haven't seen BOB AND CAROL AND TED AND ALICE for eons. Back in the day I definitely wasn't able to appreciate the social and psychological nuances, lol. But I remember even then (One Million B.C.) being intuitively resistant towards Mazursky, who even then I felt was a bit too "bridge-and-tunnel", if you know what I mean.

Hey, Fedya!
LOL
I decided to watch some Eastwood stuff (the '80's seem positively quaint now, sad to say...), most notably TIGHTROPE and SUDDEN IMPACT. I thought Clint would be a refreshing change of pace from preachy old Robert Rossen, ha! But geez, I've never seen more of that cheesy old action standby -- people crashing through glass -- than in these two Clints. (not that I have any comparisons of his other movies to go by, but PLAY MISTY FOR ME isn't bad)

Cap and Scottman, Mom was unintentionally on-target for not remembering THEY CAME TO CORDURA, lol. Just saw it on YouTube and all I can say is: Meh! A good cast -- who doesn't love Coop, Rita, Van, and Richard Conte? -- but talky and pretentious. "Courage and cowardice!" Yes, human nature is complicated, what a shocker.
-
I'm worried about Mom.
She watched THEY CAME TO CORDURA, which I've never seen, so I asked her about it.
Her response?
"I don't really remember, but they did get there".

>A few years ago I ordered a book on french design and had to laugh when I got it, it was all that Texas french, where they ruin the whole thing with lots of faux leopard skin and that trashy glam thing you are talking about. Oy!>
Oy indeed -- and I think I know the book you're talking about! I got it out of the library along with another hefty coffee-table type one, and the designs inside were way over the top. Yes, lots of faux leopard skin, lol.

I can't get into THE SANDPIPER or DR. ZHIVAGO, but at least in ZHIVAGO there are two good performances, by Tom Courtenay and -- I can't believe I'm saying this, lol -- Rod Steiger.
-
Hahahaha! Did you say anything to Mike? I wouldn't have wanted to -- just in case he wasn't as gracious and down-to-earth in real life. I love Robert Morse, so adorable! But then I've always had a soft spot for the shorties....
Houzz is positively addicting. Click in any style you're interested in -- Parisian, Tuscan, French Colonial, etc., and wham! You might become glassy-eyed! I've noticed that true Southern girls seem to have the best chic decorating blogs. (they're not to be confused with a few faux-Dixie "bling"-types on HGTV who cater to movie stars and are more in the trashy-glam Kardashian mold) I've never noted any Lone Star state fusion at Cote de Texas, only the most fabulously "pure" interior designs, always stylish and charming. I haven't seen the other blogs you mention.
I recorded DODGE CITY last night and am going to watch it later this afternoon after I do some Spring cleaning. I love Olivia and Errol as a couple, and can't wait!

Whew, that's better, Jackie! In my heart of hearts I just knew the wildest thing Mike ever got into were his plaid jackets, ha! And I know what you mean about the "washed-up" vibe, lol, but after Johnny and Mike, I actually preferred Merv as a talk show host, mainly because Arthur Treacher was around. A strange combination but I thought it worked. I never really cared for Ed with Carson. Wonder if Shirley Temple ever dropped by for a reunion dance with Arthur. ("The Old Kent Road" from THE LITTLE PRINCESS)
I love the House of Turquoise site! A wonderful addition to Houzz, Cote de Texas, etc.

Yep, that's it. I love the chic look of Charlie's pad, so mid-century modern. Walter Matthau is so funny, also Pat Boone, who brilliantly spoofs his vanilla image. And I'm continually amazed by Tony's talents as a straight man, first seen of course in SOME LIKE IT HOT.
-
What's House of Turquoise? (sounds vaguely R-rated, lol)
-
>Now I'll show how old I am by saying that Mike continually had on all his peeps - those toupee wearing, pop singing guys who all looked vaguely like Mike himself. Shatner was on more than once, I believe, and I remember (in fact I can't get it out of my brain) a conversation between three of his guests and Mike where they discussed how low the crotch in their pants hung - this has stuck with me for years... one of those little tidbits that clung to the inside of my brain and disturbs me occasionally in the same way Shatner's singing disturbs me.>
Oh, no, say it ain't so, lol! I used to have a crush on inoffensive Mike -- you know, the handsome, decent, family-loving Irishman, and now you've shattered the illusion, ha! But of course Douglas was old-school, just like Merv, Johnny, Jack Paar, and Steve Allen (my favorite) Remember "Sammy Maudlin" from SCTV, lol?)
-
One of my favorite pre-seventies beach houses is from another Minnelli film (and one of my favorite comedies) -- GOODBYE, CHARLIE. (whatever happened to Laura Devon?)
-
Ha! I was actually thinking about Dr. Safti -- Burton's version in the anemic remake THE RAINS OF RANCHIPUR, which my mind drifted to as I was watching the wonderfully awful THE SANDPIPER, lol. (caftans and a tan were just not flattering to Elizabeth) Similiar romantic "frustrations" in both stories.
I wonder how Orson and Loretta got along during the filming in general. (I can't imagine that Welles was seriously considering casting Agnes as "Mrs". Wilson. I mean, would that really have worked?)
I'm going to check out that Outback Wrangler show real soon, lol. Mom told me: "Now if you could only get a guy as nice as that lizard".
-
Oops, I've got chandeliers on the brain, ha! Too much time spent at the Houzz site staring at the drool-worthy Provencal, French and Italian Riviera interior designs...
-
So glad you enjoyed these, Jackie. You must try to finish watching Captain Kirk's performance, because he gets progressively worse than you can imagine, lol, with some porn-sax musical accompaniment and a bizarrely appreciative audience egging him on. And then at the end it sounds like the usually sane Mike Douglas is shouting "Good!" (maybe Mike just let out with that in sheer relief that it was over...) Van looks very dapper in the Benny pic. And who doesn't love Lee Marvin? (I want that chandelier, too!)
