I'm new here, but I saw a Family Guy post and had to come out of the woodwork!
1. The creator of Family Guy, Seth MacFarland, is a HUGE fan of musicals. I remember reading an interview where his sister noted that in Seth's car, were nothing but musical soundtracks.
2. There were two episodes (that I can remember off the top of my head) where Family Guy used two songs from certain musicals. One was a recent episode where they did the entire "Shipoopi" song from "The Music Man". There was another, older episode where Meg, Chris and Stewie go to bed singing the song, "So Long, Farewell" from "The Sound of Music." On the commentary, I remember Seth mentioning that they were surprised they got permission to use that song, except that they HAD to use it exactly the way it was supposed to be performed (no funny cutaways or Meg getting randomly beat up in the middle of it.) That's still one of my favorite FG moments. Those probably were the conditions for the Gene Kelly clip as well.
Oh, I also forgot the "Road to..." episodes, which are homages to the "Road to..." movie series! And the whole "North by Northwest" parody in the first episode of the 3rd season.
So to see Stewie (whose voice is based on Rex Harrison!) dancing with Gene Kelly was fantastic, but not surprising since they've done musical tributes before. To be honest, I was expecting Stewie to do something evil. I actually watched that through my fingers, expecting something terrible, but was very happy by the end. Plus, I love Gene Kelly, so to combine my love of classic movies and Family Guy? Fantastic! They do that a lot, which is probably why I love it so much (although the episodes of late have been of mixed quality)
I'm a pretty big fan of FG (if you haven't noticed!), despite the fact that it can get pretty raunchy at times. It's probably the only thing I watch besides TCM.
Back to lurking!
