The one actor that comes close to me loving everyone of their movies is Cary Grant. There are a couple of duds, but for the most part I enjoy his movies.
James Cagney is also a joy to watch, as well as Olivia de Havilland, Jean Arthur, Fred Astaire, and plenty of others.
Great lists so far!!

I'm assuming TCM will do another year of their Summer Under the Stars festival. I thought it would be fun if we could list the actors and actresses that you would like to see be included this year. Though I know I'm leaving out several of my favorites, here is my list:

Just missing the list:
Robert Montgomery
Glenn Ford
Paul Newman
Clint Eastwood
Claude Rains
Tony Curtis
James Cagney
Montgomery Clift
Mickey Rooney
Peter Lorre
Alan Ladd
Spencer Tracy
Irene Dunne
Ava Gardner
Teresa Wright
Jan Sterling
Patricia Neal
Greta Garbo
Bette Davis (heaven knows I need to see more of her films)
Hattie McDaniel
As for my list, I had to include several actors/actresses in which I've seen very few of their films (E. Parker, S. Mineo, S. Hayden, R. Taylor, etc...) Well, now that I think of it, I haven't seen nearly enough of almost everyone on my list. I have enjoyed of what I've seen so far of everyone listed. Hopefully the folks at TCM will check these posts and will include a few actors in their lineup this year.
What is your list?

Love With the Proper Stranger
Intruder in the Dust
Sherlock Jr.
Children of Paradise
I haven't seen Love With the Proper Stranger or Children of Paradise, and would love to revisit Intruder in the Dust and Sherlock Jr.
-
I didn't see Don't Drink the Water, but Take the Money and Run and Bananas aren't bad films at all. Sure, they aren't on the caliber of Annie Hall and Manhattan, but these are hilarious films.

A year or so ago, Patricia Neal came to my school and answered a series of questions. A relative of Neal's works (or worked, I don't know) there, and he got her to come to visit. I was excited to see a legend, and after the session I got to shake her hand!! It was a memorable day.
I still need to see more of Patricia Neal's movies, but my favorite performance so far is from Hud. A Face in the Crowd comes in a close second.

Awesome covers, filmlover!!
This programming challenge was fun to do, and I was happy to actually receive a vote.
Congrats to both allieharding and Dewey. Great jobs by everyone!!
-
Yep, I like William Holden. My favorite performance has to be in Stalag 17.
Also like him in:
Sunset Boulevard
Born Yesterday
The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Horse Soldiers
The Counterfeit Traitor
The Wild Bunch
Wild Rovers
Network
Superb actor!!

The Talk of the Town, one could argue, is Capra-esque. There are some terrific comedic elements in the film, but it has mostly a lot of social commentary. Cary Grant and Ronald Colman have several great exchanges throughout the film.
I think it's one of Grant's most underrated performances. Jean Arthur is ALWAYS a treat to watch.
-
I haven't seen "Amazing Adventure" yet, but Grant's my favorite actor and I will certainly look out for this one.
The earliest film I've seen featuring Cary Grant is Blonde Venus. He has a small part in it, and he has affections for Marlene Dietrich. He's decent in it, but his best performances were certainly ahead of him.
Some of my favorite Cary Grant films:
Notorious (I think this film features Cary's best performance, but you could argue many)
Only Angels Have Wings
His Girl Friday
Mr. Lucky
North By Northwest
Charade
Holiday
The Philadelphia Story
The Talk of the Town
None But the Lonely Heart
Bringing Up Baby

If I had to come up with a top ten list of my favorite movies, The Best Years of Our Lives would be included. It's a masterpiece, plain and simple. I also fell madly in love with Teresa Wright after seeing her moving performance here.
-
Also giving an excellent performance is Vera Miles. I've only seen her in a handful of films, but after her superb performance in The Wrong Man, I try to watch anything featuring this talented actress.
I can't help but wonder how great she would have been in Vertigo.

"What kind of man are you, dude?"
Lee Marvin rocks!!
-
Astaire was also a very good light comedian in his movies. He has many great moments with Edward Everett Horton in those great Fred and Ginger movies. Another great moment with Fred is early on in The Band Wagon when the two men are discussing how his character is washed up and no longer relevant. Astaire plays along with them, and towards the end of the scene he gives the men an "exploding cigar."
-
It seems that Fred Astaire in a few of his films poked fun of his looks. I know in both Top Hat and The Band Wagon, Fred's very frightened of what he sees in the mirror... himself!!
The gals here can certainly answer this much better than I can, but one could guess that Fred Astaire survived as a romantic lead for years was simply because of his marvelous singing and dancing. I believe I've read in a few instances where some women would have looooooved to at least once in their life dance and be sung to by Fred Astaire.
-
Astaire's "Putting on the Ritz" was brilliant. I do have to agree with the both of you that the rest of the film was unremarkable. It was very disappointing, and I had a difficult time trying to stay awake.
-
Blue Skies airs on TCM tonight. I haven't seen this one before, but doesn't it have what is considered to be one of Fred Astaire's best dance numbers? Can anyone tell me which particular number it is? Thanks.
-
I can see Joan Cusack or Sigourney Weaver in some of those great romantic/screwball comedies of the '30s and '40s.
-
Arkadin,
I haven't seen nearly enough of the blaxploitation films as I would like to. Fortunately, TCM aired two very good Pam Grier blaxploitation flicks on TCM Underground a few months back. Looking forward to seeing others in the future.
-
I like some musicals. I will watch almost anything starring Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. There are a few of Judy Garland's musicals that are very good. Some of the Warner Bros. musicals of the '30s such as Footlight Parade are excellent. West Side Story wasn't too bad. I didn't like The Sound of Music. Oklahoma, Grease, Fiddler on the Roof, and Oliver are among those that I'll probably never watch. I'm still on the fence about whether or not to see My Fair Lady.
I would love to see Love Me Tonight and many of the early sound musicals of Ernst Lubitsch. There are a few others that I'm interested in seeing, such as The Glenn Miller Story and Cabaret (surprisingly).

A ton that I'm hoping to see for the first time (or again):
Lonely Are the Brave
The Big Heat (with a great Lee Marvin performance, and a classic scene with coffee)
The Quiet American: Not Seen
The Spirit of the Beehive: N/S
Broadway Melody of 1940 (I really hope to see this one again)
Black Caesar and Hell Up in Harlem (dying to see these!!)
The Naked and the Dead: N/S
Stella Dallas: N/S
Ossessione: N/S
Act of Violence (excellent Ryan, Heflin, Astor, and J. Leigh)
Angel Face
F For Fake (I always seem to miss this whenever it's on TCM)
Blow-Up: N/S
Man on a String: N/S
The Seventh Veil (sounds like an excellent movie)
The Mortal Storm
The Harder They Fall (Bogie's last film is terrific)
Houseboat (charming Cary Grant-Sophia Loren comedy; I'm keeping my fingers crossed TCM will soon air It Started in Naples)
The Battle of the Sexes
The Battle of Algiers
Where Eagles Dare (FINALLY!!)
A Soldier's Story (first-rate military drama featuring a young Denzel Washington)
High Plains Drifter
Flight Commander (aka The Dawn Patrol; see Where Eagles Dare)
The Big Sky: N/S
The Dark Past: N/S
Suddenly (my favorite Frank Sinatra performance)
Ransom (I seriously need to re-visit this one)
Not to mention the Brando documentary, Star of the Month for Hepburn and the Duke (I'm glad I'll get the chance to see Big Jake and Brannigan)
It's a very good schedule!!

Am I one of the few guys who really enjoys this movie? I can enjoy the romantic comedies/dramas as much as the action/adventure films.
I've seen The Bridges of Madison County 3 or 4 times, and it gets even better with repeated viewings. Of course, one doesn't instantly think of Clint Eastwood in a romantic drama. His performance here, I think, is among his best.
This is a beautiful, quiet love story with great direction, photography, and touching performances. I honestly can't think of many love stories, if any, since 'Bridges' that I've enjoyed as much as this.
-
Anyone here seen The Pride and the Passion? That one really gives me a headache (not because the dialogue is fast or anything, but it's just terrible). Cary Grant didn't make many bad movies, but that's my least favorite of his.
My favorite Grant performance is from Notorious. His Girl Friday and None But the Lonely Heart round out the top three.

Only Angels Have Wings is my favorite Howard Hawks movie. The cast is amazing, and Hawks' usual themes of manhood, male bonding, and loyalty (among others) seem to be at its strongest here. I've never had a problem with the studio location shooting. The film is quite atmospheric. One gets the sense that they are actually in a South American location, and not somewhere in California.
I try to watch Only Angels Have Wings whenever it is on TCM. I love it!!

I know John Garfield was included last year, and was fortunate to see a few of the films aired.
Since TCM has included several actors in the lineup each year, it would be great if they include Van Johnson and Claire Trevor (I love this woman) again in '07. I wasn't able to see any of the films shown those days, which was very disappointing.
