  1. I doubt TCM had any "influence" on Elvis Mitchell steering Bill Murray away from Arsenic and Old Lace. However, I would have liked to have heard more on what Bill enjoyed about the film. Perhaps that's the disadvantage of having a thirty minute show instead of an hour.

Still, the interview was terrific. Murray's final comments even had the crew cracking up!!

Note: Great picture of Babs!! I love me some Barbara Stanwyck.

  2. Tomorrow at 8:15am Eastern:

    Kiss Me Deadly (1955)

Detective Mike Hammer fights to solve the murder of a beautiful hitchhiker with a mysterious connection to the Mob.

Cast: Ralph Meeker, Cloris Leachman, Albert Dekker. Dir: Robert Aldrich. BW-106 mins, TV-PG

Fantastic and brutal film-noir from director Robert Aldrich.

  3. Lots of great stuff!!

I'm thrilled that Carole Lombard is Star of the Month. Hopefully, I'll finally have the chance to see No Man of Her Own and The Eagle and the Hawk. Twentieth Century is finally airing on TCM as well. Lombard and John Barrymore are sublime in this one.

Too many other goodies to mention, though I'm happy about seeing Le Mans and Boomerang.

  4. TCM has honored Olivia de Havilland in the past, including a day of her films on her 90th birthday. I still wouldn't mind, though, seeing some of her films as part of another festival. Perhaps they have something in store in the future. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

  5. Tonight at 1:30am Eastern:

None but the Lonely Heart (1944)

A young ne'er-do-well tries to get his life on track to help his ailing mother.

Cast: Cary Grant, Ethel Barrymore, Barry Fitzgerald. Dir: Clifford Odets. BW-113 mins, TV-PG

Archie Leach's most personal film, and one of his very best performances. He and Ethel Barrymore are superb here.

  6. Tomorrow at 4:15 and 6 pm Eastern:

    Public Enemy, The (1931)

An Irish-American street punk tries to make it big in the world of organized crime.

Cast: James Cagney, Edward Woods, Jean Harlow. Dir: William A. Wellman. BW-84 mins, TV-PG

    Roaring Twenties, The (1939)

Three WWI Army buddies get mixed up with the mob in peacetime.

Cast: James Cagney, Priscilla Lane, Humphrey Bogart. Dir: Raoul Walsh. BW-107 mins, TV-G

    Two Cagney classics.

  7. I'm going to have to hear Rose's comments if Seven Samurai repeats on The Essentials. She's been great so far, so I may give her a break if her remarks aren't too flattering. I'd rather, though, her say she's not a fan of the film than give a phony excuse as to why she feels it's the greatest thing ever.

Note: This again makes my head scratch. I have no problem if a co-host isn't a fan of a particular film airing. However, if it's called The Essentials then why would a picture be selected if Robert Osborne and his co-host don't both agree on how great it is? Osborne, Molly Haskell, and Carrie Fisher have said (once or twice) they weren't quite in love with a film as much as most critics and fans were.

Haven't seen Seven Samurai in a few years, but I was completely captivated from beginning to end. I really need to see more of Kurosawa's films.

  8. Today at 4pm Eastern:

    Man From Laramie, The (1955)

A wandering cowboy gets caught in the rivalry between an aging rancher's sons.

Cast: James Stewart, Arthur Kennedy, Donald Crisp. Dir: Anthony Mann. C-102 mins, TV-PG

Among the very best of the Anthony Mann-James Stewart westerns. Arthur Kennedy is a particular standout here.

  9. I'm not really tired of seeing the Rock Hudson-Doris Day comedies on TCM. Lover Come Back seems to be the only one of the three airing in the past year or so. However, there is on Rock Hudson film I'd love to see on TCM: Seconds. It's been a few years since I've seen it, but this film contains arguably Rock's best performance. A very memorable drama from John Frankenheimer.

  10. I saw But Not For Me last year. It's not bad at all. Lilli Palmer is especially wonderful in a female C.K. Dexter Haven type of role. I woudn't mind seeing it on TCM either.

Gable was typically good throughout his career, but I particularly prefer his performances from his later years: Command Decision, Mogambo, Teacher's Pet, Run Silent Run Deep, It Started in Naples, The Misfits, etc...

  11. Another thing I've noticed is when someone requests a movie, another person follows by saying when that movie will air and on what station. It only annoys me because that individual may not have that particular TV station, which is why they've suggested it on the TCM website!! We don't all have 500 stations to turn to.

  12. Agreed. I sometimes wonder if my suggestion squeezed in between Dukes of Hazzard and Gigli would get ignored by TCM. As a result, I wait a little later when those "requests" are gone.

Hopefully, the programmers at TCM won't get fed up seeing those suggestions and decide to shut the request page down. Thankfully, several of my requests have aired over the past few years.

  13. OK, OK, I know this question comes up often. There are several actors and actresses I'm dying to see celebrated with an extensive tribute. A few names have already been Star of the Month, but they were long before I was into TCM or classic movies. Here's my list:

    Mary Astor (most definitely)

Paul Newman (I'm surprised he's never been SOTM)

    Buster Keaton

    Ann Sheridan

    Alan Ladd

    Ginger Rogers

    Van Johnson

    Claire Trevor

    Clint Eastwood (yep)

    Sydney Greenstreet

    Eleanor Parker

    Lee Tracy

    Lon Chaney

    Robert Ryan

    Lillian Gish

Joel McCrea (don't think I saw his name on the list, either)

    Rock Hudson

Glenda Farrell (with the several posts recently about Glenda, I'm sure many will agree with me)

    That's enough... for now.

BTW, here's the list of the Stars of the Month if you want to check it out:

  14. Earlier this year, I had sound problems with TCM. I couldn't hear any sound for nearly a week. It was the only station with this problem. Right now, there's nothing wrong with my cable.

I hope the situation gets clear for everyone else. Being without TCM can be torture.

  15. I second this one, Fred:

    Shanghai Express (1932)

A beautiful temptress re-kindles an old romance while trying to escape her past during a tension-packed train journey.

Cast: Marlene Dietrich, Clive Brook, Anna May Wong. Dir: Josef von Sternberg. BW-82 mins, TV-14.

Sublime von Sternberg, luminous Marlene Dietrich.

  16. Airing tonight at 1:45am:

    It Started In Naples (1960)

An American lawyer trying to settle his brother's affairs in Italy falls for one of the man's in-laws.

Cast: Clark Gable, Sophia Loren, Vittorio de Sica. Dir: Melville Shavelson. C-100 mins, TV-PG

A gem, and the little boy in this film is quite good.

  17. Highlights (most of these will be possible first time viewings):

Kay Francis - Star of the Month (and Trouble in Paradise is included!!)

One Potato, Two Potato (I've heard good things about this one)

Big Deal on Madonna Street (same as above)

Political themed month- Awesome that The Candidate will be included; one of Redford's best performances.

Thelma Ritter evening (it's a shame Fox won't give up most of their films to TCM, but I'm glad they'll honor this wonderful actress).

Terror in a Texas Town (been requesting this one for a while)

    Devil's Doorway

    The Tall Target

The Great McGinty, The Boss, and The Glass Key will air September 24 (great birthday gifts for me!!)

    Kansas City Confidential (at last!!)

    Excellent month, TCM!!

  18. Tomorrow night (though, technically, it's airing on Thursday morning) at 3 am Eastern:

    Suddenly (1954)

Gunmen take over a suburban home to plot a presidential assassination.

Cast: Frank Sinatra, Sterling Hayden, James Gleason. Dir: Lewis Allen. BW-76 mins, TV-PG

This features my favorite Sinatra performance.

  19. Sydney Pollack, unfortunately, doesn't come up as much in the conversation as one of the best directors of his era. We hear more about Scorsese, Coppola, Altman, Spielberg, etc... Pollack's work was just as great and just as interesting. R.I.P.

Sydney's passing makes his interview with Elvis Mitchell coming up in July all the more worth seeing. He was also THE best host for TCM's The Essentials.

Note: I just noticed coincidentally that Three Days of the Condor will air tonight. Definitely one of Pollack's best.
