I guess I'm in the minority here, but I think Brando is the actor who was most gifted. His string of films in the early 50's were so great - who else had a string of films that include The Men (his 1st film), A Streetcar Named Desire, Viva Zapata, Julius Caesar, On the Waterfront, The Wild One and Guys & Dolls? That's a pretty good start to a film career - and I do believe he got nominated for Best Actor 4 times in a row and finally won for On The Waterfront.
For those who didn't like Streetcar, it's obvioulsy individual taste - but there are very few films I can watch countless times without getting tired of it, and this film is one of them. The chemistry between Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando was outstanding and the performance by Brando ranks as one of the best I've seen - maybe only second to his On The Waterfront performance.
So I think there's not enough superlatives to describe Brando.

That's a great story. I like Brando also and would love to see some photos as well.

Great thread and some real nice photos of Widmark. Keep 'em coming!

The Oscar ceremony was awful, so nothing really changes from year to year. But at least they picked a better BEST PICTURE film than that dud CRASH from a few years ago.
I was turning stations and falling asleep during the show, but I was able to see a good portion of it. I feel the films get more trivial every year and none of the nominated films were blockbusters and I venture to say they will not be remembered as true "classics". I forgot about them all and it's less than a week after the Oscar ceremony.
I basically turned right after this lady Diablo something came on as I completely lost my appetite. I don't know what Hollywood is doing these days, but there is none of the aura and charisma in today's stars that there was with the "classic" film stars. Something is sorely lacking.

Not a favorite film of mine, but I like the Brando version. Actually I watch most films Brando's in. I think he was a terrific actor.
-
I think Heath Ledger was a very good actor who had great potential. His performance in Brokeback Mountain was outstanding, one of the best I've seen from our current class of young actors.
Although Brokeback Mountain isn't a "classic" film because it was made in 2005, I think
TCM would be well-served to show this gem as a tribute to Heath Ledger, and also because it's such a terrific movie. There are only a few films that I'd watch more than once and this was one of them. Most films I see, I tend to forget right after I view them, but this was the exception.
I already miss the films we will never see by Heath Ledger. I too thought his intensity rivaled that of Marlon Brando. When I heard this news, I was hoping it was some nightmare, but unfortunately, it's true - it is still difficult to speak of him in the past tense - R.I.P. Heath Ledger
-
I just saw BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. I hadn't seen it for 2 years and decided to watch it again. It was very difficult to watch this film due to the recent passing of Heath Ledger - but I recall that I liked this film very much and wanted to see it again in honor of this great young actor. I think Heath Ledger should have won an award for playing Ennis Del Marr in this film. He was terrific and showed great depth in his acting abilities. I'm sadded that he is no longer with us and one must think what this young talent might have given us in future films. He was a bright, shining star that faded too fast - I'm very sad that he is gone. R.I.P. Heath Ledger - always in our heart.
-
I hope TCM will show Brokeback Mountain in honor of Heath Ledger - I know it's not an old enough film to be considered "classic" - but it is an extraordinary film and the performance by Heath Ledger is one of the best. It is was great sadness that we won't be able to see this amazing talent in any future films. I thought he was one of the best - a great actor, kind, gentle person and amazingly handsome as well. R.I.P.

I saw this film last night on TCM. Bette Davis called it one of her worst films - and I tend to agree. A few of the scenes got a chuckle out of me, but it was too dumb for me to laugh at. I enjoy Cagney in other films such as Yankee Doodle Dandy, Public Enemy and White Heat - and I think Bette Davis made tons of films which were better than this silly film - it just didn't do a thing for me.
-
I say NAY to Tom Cruise. I think he's highly overated. He was "okay" in films like "Rain Man", but I never think he is versatile and quite frankly, he's scary looking - almost like a werewolf with the huge eye teeth hanging out of his mouth and when he turns to the side, his nose is huge. I see nothing good looking about this guy, his acting is only "average" at best, and he has demonstrated in his personal life that the elevator does not go up to the top floor - for those reasons, I'm not a Tom Cruise fan.
-
Here's another vote of "YES" for Johnny Depp. I like him and his films. I recently saw Sweeney Todd and he was awesome. I can't believe Depp is going to be 45 years old. I remember him from 21 Jump Street days.

This is a very hard question. There are so many classic actors and actresses who had tremendous screen presence. Off the top of my head, I'll choose the following -
Actors: William Holden, Montgomery Clift and Marlon Brando
Actresses: Vivien Leigh, Bette Davis and Elizabeth Taylor
-
My choices for:
Overated:
Casablanca - very boring even though everyone seems to like it
Citizen Kane - fall asleep on it everytime
Shane - boring, boring, boring and the acting was atrocious
Vertigo - an average film, but I like other Jimmy Stewart films better
All About Eve - I watched it cause so many people rave about it, but I couldn't stand the film
Underated:
Patch of Blue - love this film
Blackboard Jungle - terrific film
One-Eyed Jacks - one of the best westerns, but hardly ever shown
Yankee Doodle Dandy - a great musical
Poseiden Adventure
East of Eden
Dead Ringer
-
I love the photos of Lucy - such a beautiful and talented lady!
-
I also like Vic Morrow. I think Blackboard Jungle was a good film and Vic Morrow played the bad student Artie West with such believability. He was very impressive and I also want to add that Richard Kiley and Glenn Ford were great in that film as well.
Jennifer Jason Leigh is quite an actress, but I don't hear too much about her. I have also seen her comments on TCM about Barbara Stanwyck and I thought it was a very interesting piece. Perhaps TCM can have her as a guest programmer sometime.
Jennifer was 2 years old when her parents divorced - so I don't really know what type of relationship she had with him after that. I once read that Vic Morrow viewed his daughter's name change to rid herself of the Morrow last name as the ultimate act of disloyalty (I read this on a Vic Morrow tribute website years ago where they had lots of articles and magazine clippings on Vic) But in any case, I think there is a lot more to their estrangement than her name change. I don't think anyone has a definitive answer about that and it's a private family matter. I also read that Jennifer paid for, and had the gravestone made for her father's final resting place - and I thought that was touching. She has been on the Actor's Studio with James Lipton and I had read articles where she said she respected Vic as an actor, but he was like a stranger to her - how sad that is.
Also, I watched Twilight Zone, the movie - on TVLand a few days ago and I felt it was a terrible film. It's too bad this awful film was Vic's last work and I had read he was embarrassed by this film and thought it was a piece of garbage - plus they were asking him to do dangerous things that he wasn't comfortable with. The actual scene with the tragedy was not in the film. I wouldn't recommend this film - but maybe others might have a different opinion.
If you want to see Vic Morrow at his best, see Blackboard Jungle and COMBAT t.v. series - he was spectacular in these and one can easily see what a supberb talent he was. Not only that, he was incredibly sexy and handsome in COMBAT playing Sgt. Saunders. I have the DVD's and was hooked on the show immediately. It's too bad Vic Morrow's career didn't skyrocket right after COMBAT because he was very popular during the latd 1960's and I vividly remember watching the show on Tuesday nights with my family when I was a young child. R.I.P. Vic Morrow
-
To John, I have some DVD's of Combat as well. I really think it was one of the best shows ever made. I think Vic Morrow was instrumental in making that show a success. His acting was flawless in it, and if you see an episode called Survival, you can easily see how talented an actor he was. It's an episode where he gets his arms and hands burned and his pain looks so realistic throughout the show - it was his only Emmy nomination for that episode.
-
I liked Yul Brynner in Ten Commandments the best.
I also liked him in King and I
He was also good in Magnificent Seven
Aside from that, I've only seen Yul Brynner in one other film called Moritouri which was one of the most boring films, but Marlon Brando looked sexy in the film, so I managed to stay awake.
-
Jennifer Jason Leigh is a great actress, and I hear she might get Best Actress Oscar for her upcoming film Margot at the Wedding which comes out in November.
Vic Morrow, Jennifer's father, was a supberb actor, albeit very underated. I loved him in Combat.
The resemblence between Jennifer and her father Vic Morrow is astounding.
-
I have the Chase on DVD. It's a good movie - not one of my favorite Brando films and I cringe when he gets brutally beaten. Robert Redford and Angie Dickinson were okay as were Jane Fonda...but I don't really like the film too much.
-
Looks like Bette Davis will be in the top 5. I remember that interview and she was very sick and old at the time. I'm not interested in seeing that again.
-
movielover is right, this voting on CNN doesn't work. I tried to vote a few times, but the tally never changes. maybe it's my computer - but somehow I think this thing is rigged. I would like to see Bette Davis and Marlon Brando interviews and I know more people would have voted for Brando than what the CNN tally shows.
-
I guess Twilight Zone the Movie is only on premium cable stations. I don't get those stations, just basic ones - cable is so expensive, it's not even worth it anymore and the cable companies keep raising their prices every few months and taking stations away from "basic" and moving them to "premium" to force customers to pay more money. The government should crack down on these cable companies already.
Mikek - your Vic Morrow sculpture is FABULOUS. I thought this was really Vic Morrow, how in the world were you able to create such an amazing likeness???

Never saw Man Called Sledge. Anyone see some Sci-Fi flicks Vic Morrow made, like "Humanoids from the Deep" or "Bronx Warriors"
I saw a Sci-Fi flick that Vic Morrow's daughter Jennifer Jason Leigh made called ExistenZ with Jude Law. Pretty good flick and she looks amazingly like her father.

in General Discussions
Posted
Wow the August Schedule looks great! I look forward to the Richard Widmark day of films - and Pickup on South Street is a terrific film - I'm glad TCM will be showing this!
The other day I look forward to in August is the Marlon Brando day of films on August 29th. He's one of my favorite actors and I'm glad TCM is devoting a day to him.
Thanks TCM for the Richard Widmark and Marlon Brando "days in August" !!!!
Note: I would have loved to see Streetcar Named Desire on the Brando day as well as The Men and Viva Zapata - I wonder if TCM will ever show these Brando films as they are some of his best work.
