Okay - well I think Morrow and Cagney had a resemblence - there are very young photos of Cagney and Morrow - and they had a similar look. Also, I had mentioned another lookalike in the "lookalike" thread under hot topics - Lou Diamond Philips and tennis player Rafael Nadal. What do you think of that matchup?
-
I don't know why, but I'd like the sweaty t-shirt Brando wore in Streetcar Named Desire.
Also, I'd like:
- the table they sat around from 12 Angry Men
- the jacket Brando wore in On the Waterfront
- Judy Garland's dress from Wizard of Oz
- The 10 Commandments held by Charlton Heston - in the Ten Commandments, along with the staff
-
Hi Dargo. I also loved the t.v. show Combat. They sure don't make 'em like that anymore. That show holds up really well - 45 years later. I agree, Vic Morrow can be described as "sullen". Speaking of Morrow and that "lookalike" thread in "Hot Topics" - how about a very young Vic Morrow and a very young James Cagney? I always thought there was a resemblence there.
-
Thanks for posting those Dargo. I think they look exactly alike - Tarentino and Federer. Also, Lou Diamond Philips and tennis player Rafael Nadal look alike too - hope you can post their photos as well. Thank you.

I would say Quentin Tarentino and tennis player Roger Federer look alike. Can anyone post their photos here?

Vic Morrow's performance in Blackboard Jungle was one of the best I've seen. He should have been nominated as "supporting actor" for that film. Glenn Ford and Sidney Poitier were also good - although I thought Potier was a little too old to be a high school student at that time. Morrow was a great actor, always gave terrific performances. Yes, I too, would love to see a day devoted to him as well on TCM. He should also get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

I just wanted to digress here. First time I'm seeing this thread. It is David Cassidy's birthday on April 12th. I couldn't believe he will be 61 years old. I remember him on Partridge Family. It's a darn shame he got typecast as a "teenybopper". He was much more than that. He voice was exceptional, great singing range. Aside from that, every girl swooned for him in the Partridge Family days - that hair, those eyes, that voice and of course that hair. Today, seems his looks have faded, but back then, he was mighty fine looking. I haven't seen Partridge Family in 40 years, but they show it on antenna t.v. now - and I almost swooned again at the sight of the young David Cassidy.

On the Waterfront - best film I ever saw....followed by: (in no particular order)
Streetcar Named Desire
Godfather
10 Commandments
12 Angry Men
Wizard of Oz
East of Eden
Blackboard Jungle
Great Escape
Stalag 17
Forrest Gump
Pickup on South Street
Sunset Boulevard
White Heat

I agree. I wish TCM could show more of his films. They show Blackboard Jungle from time to time. He made some other films which aren't shown very often. I can't find some of them on DVD either. I thought he could have been nominated for an award for Blackboard Jungle. Maybe it was because he was new to movies at that time and so he wasn't nominated. He was really quite frightening playing that character Artie West in Blackboard Jungle, but then a few years later, he was really good-looking when he played in the COMBAT television series. I liked him, there was something quite handsome and macho looking about him, sort of that craggy look, but I think a lot of men watched COMBAT and the women also watched it back then mostly to see Vic Morrow, I know I did.

Vic Morrow would have been 82 years old today - Feb. 14th. Just wanted to make a thread for him today. He was a great actor, albeit very underated. He should have been a "lead" in film, but it never happened. I think he was primarily into made for t.v. movies and guest appearances in many t.v. shows after doing the show COMBAT for which is mostly known for. I saw him guest star in an Alfred Hitchcock Presents episode and also in an old "Elliot Ness" episode and he also did several "Bonanza" shows. I think he was a terrific "method" actor - very intense. He played the "bad guy" roles better than anyone. I'm surprised that he didn't get nominated for an award for his performance in Blackboard Jungle and that his career didn't skyrocket after that. Anyone else see him in any other films?
-
Mickey Rooney was never a favorite of mine - for some reason I feel that he smells bad and I can smell him through the t.v. screen. I just can't look at him....but I'm sure he's a nice man and maybe a good actor.

Looking at the list from the past several years of "Star of Month" for TCM...I'm surprised Marlon Brando has never been "Star of the Month". He's always been hailed as the "greatest actor", so why not showcase him as "Star of the Month"? Long overdue.
Secondly, I'd love to see another terrific actor get some recognition - and that is Vic Morrow. His films are hardly ever shown on TCM except for "Blackboard Jungle". He has made a handful of films - so of which are not on DVD and never shown on TCM. Films of Morrow's that would make excellent viewing are: Blackboard Jungle, God's Little Acre, Men in War, Cimarron, Portrait of a Mobster, The Glass House, Bad News Bears, King Creole, Hell's Five Hours, Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, California Kid to name a few. At least TCM should have him as a "Summer Under The Stars" showcase for one day in August. Vic Morrow is one of the most underated actors - he was one of the best actors I've ever seen - too bad he never had the appreciation and opportunities he deserved.
-
I think my vote would have to go to Marlon Brando. He is often regarded on different movie websites as the greatest actor in history, along with Laurence Olivier.
-
Hands down, I'll take Blackboard Jungle over Rebel Without A Cause. I liked the storyline and acting better in Blackboard Jungle. I liked James Dean in East of Eden. I thought Rebel Without A Cause was an irritating movie - it did nothing for me. I thought Glenn Ford was terrific as "Daddio" and Sydney Poiter was great and Vic Morrow was exceptional in this film as the rotten student. I think Vic Morrow should have been nominated for an award for this film.

Kimpunkrock, what a GREAT list you have. I liked that you included one of my favorites, Vic Morrow, on your list. He's not mentioned very often, but what a great, underated actor. He should have a day devoted to his films on TCM sometime. I also like the idea of James Dean and Marlon Brando "combo day"
Here is my list:
Lee J. Cobb
Vic Morrow
James Dean
Marlon Brando
William Holden
Vivien Leigh
Joan Crawford
Bette Davis
Shelley Winters
Paul Newman
James Cagney
Richard Widmark
Ralph Meeker
Aldo Ray
Burt Lancaster
Yul Brynner
Steve McQueen
Glenn Ford
Richard Basehart
Linda Darnell
Joseph Cotton
Dana Andrews
Charlton Heston
Karl Malden
Edward G. Robinson
Vincent Price
James Stewart
Frank Sinatra
Jerry Lewis
Greta Garbo

What a great thread. Has anyone heard of these songs:
Playground in my Mind - Clint Holmes
Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks
Rock Me Gently - Andy Kim

Billy Don't Be A Hero - Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods

I think Michael Jackson should have been included. He wasn't a movie star in the "classic sense", but he did star in The Wiz, and more importantly, he was the greatest singer, entertainer, performer and dancer that ever lived. That, in my opinion, should be enough to include this phenomenal talent in the TCM list.

TCM should have recognized Michael Jackson - even if he wasn't a movie star in the "classic sense", he did star in The Wiz and more importantly, he was the greatest performer, entertainer, singer and dancer that ever lived. That's enough for me to conclude he should have been added to the list.

My choice for Best Actor would be the one and only Marlon Brando.
-
I like to see some different actors/actresses showcased instead of the same ones they show thoroughout the year. Some of my choices would be:
Aldo Ray
Ralph Meeker
Lee J Cobb
Thelma Ritter
Rod Steiger
Leslie Caron
Natalie Wood
Richard Basehart
James Coburn
Vic Morrow
Sal Mineo
Jerry Lewis/Dean Martin
Abbott and Costello

Oh boy, the Jackson youtube links are awesome! This brings back lots of memories. A tear came to my eye watching the young Michael Jackson - he was the most adorable child - with talent far beyond his years. Thanks so much for posting that!

Great film! I loved it. Brando was terrific. He should have gotten best actor award.

I can't believe the media coverage on Michael Jackson. My personal opinion is that he was a phenomenal entertainer. I liked his music, his videos and his dancing. I think he appealed to all types of people and incorporated different musical genres into his music. I loved his "moon walk" and that Thriller album will always be one of my favorites. He was "odd", but he was one of the cutest kids back in the Jackson 5 days. I think he was one of the greatest musical talents. I hope he gets the peace now that he couldn't get while he was alive.

Willieshedd - yes, I saw Glass House many years ago. I remember Alan Alda (pre-Mash days) and Vic Morrow. That was a very scary film. Morrow was so frightening in it - but his performance was excellent. That film is rarely shown, but it isn't for someone with a weak stomach.
